at 1440p, will the hyped 480 really perform near a 1070 if both are OCed? MSI's lowest priced 1070 is about $450, but from my experience jumping on the R9 390 8g hype train the amount of Nvidia's supported games/application outnumber AMD greatly which almost defeated some of the value in their card.
i know i shouldnt feed the jews but i dont have the time or care to optimize every game i play. i have shit to do. should a casual like me go 1070?
i note that an i7 66xx is recommended while I have a i7 4490k, which probably wont factor much

You shouldn't expect a near 1070 performance from the 480, but it will probably still be alright for 1440p gayming. For $450 you can probably buy two 480s though and crossmeme them. That configuration should beat the 1070

Why is everyone talking about xfire when discussing the rx480? Multi GPU solutions are effectively supported by a very few games, in fact, most games run WORSE on multiple GPUs than on a single one. Not to mention that AMD's crossfire bullshit is an absolute nightmare to even get working, let alone tweak to some tolerable performance levels.
OP, when you shop for a GPU, get one that will suffice for whatever you want BY ITSELF, not combined with another GPU or 4 of them. This pajeet mentality is just incredibly fucking retarded and will strangle every bit of joy out of your purchase.
As everyone keeps saying, wait for the benchmarks, but you pretty much have a better chance of winning the lottery than the rx480 has on topping the gtx1070 on anything.

The 1070 will be faster than an RX 480, but not so much to justify costing twice as much, imo.
We also don't know how much performance the RX 480 gains in Directx 12 games. We already know that the 390X performs on par with a 980TI in Directx 12 games, and the RX 480 at stock clocks has about 390X performance while the 1070 has about 980TI performance.
If the rumours about the RX 480's OC capabilities are ture, it will probably be faster than a 1070 in Directx 12 and Vulkan games.
We just don't know enough about the RX 480. It's all rumours and speculation at this point. Just wait another two weeks until after the RX 480 has been released and benchmarked by everybody and their mum.

agreed. it's like people don't actually try crossfire but think it sounds great in theory, but it always just adds headaches in all setups. you'll end up having to turn it off for specific things and then remember to turn it on, etc etc. it's not fun, been there tried that and not doing it again

The RX480 is not a competitor to the 1070, nor was it ever meant to be. AMD has said from the very beginning that the 480 is aimed at the mainstream market, and that it performs like an r9 390, which is far slower than the 1070. Overclocking it will probably increase performance quite a bit, but I wouldn't expect more it to get any more than 80% of the 1070's performance. Still, 80% of the performance while being half the cost sounds like a good deal to me.
