Python or java?

Learn both, Java first is a good way to go
Python, because it's easier to work with.
Scala.
I say this having written Python for 8 years now. It's great for small programs; standard libs are extremely versatile; but package/dependency management sucks, I'm start to get sick of dynamic typing, and the 2.7/3.x split is still painful.
Java is a meme perpetrated by millions of companies that are stuck in 1995. Java 8 JUST added anonymous functions. Its type system is still busted.
Scala is the way to go. Runs on the JVM and you can use any Java libs, dependency management with maven or sbt is much better than pip, and the language itself is a fucking delight.
I learnt Java first which made learning Python way easier. So I'd say Java is good to learn first :)
Python (elegant, intuitive)print 'Hello, World!'
Java (autistic, needlessly complicated)class Hello_World {
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println("Hello, World!");
}
}

Scala is a mess.
Clojure is the only way to go on the JVM.

Java is for business (ENTERPRISE) applications, not for Hello World and Fizzbuzz circlejerking on /g/
You might as well flip a coin. They're equally useful and pay equally well.

what the fuck are you on about?
Scala is complete shit

Just use real programing language, not script shit.
