Yep. I'm not a huge fan of it personally, because I think it's a less stable rack for the bar, but plenty of really strong people do it that way, and if you really wanna front squat, and you can't do a proper front rack, it's a good alternative.

Due date is the 18th. Everything is going perfectly (fingers still crossed).

>>34926382

If you can learn the front rack position, it's better, but a lot of 'big guys' go for the genie squat. As long as you're able to move the weight, go for it.

It's a Texas Power bar, which has a little whip. The bumpers shift the weight out a little more, so the whip is exaggerated. Also, my fat ass has it's own gravitational pull, which makes the bar wobbly.

What's good /PLG/, I got a question for y'all.
Lately I've been doing heavy OHP while sitting in the chair, But I feel like even with the back support I arch my lower back too much which I think hurts it and my spine. So I was thinking about switching the OHP to Incline Bench. Is this a good idea? Will I lose out on Shoulder gains?

Also anyone got any good drills for squat mobility? And does anyone know how to rehabilitate a fucked hip flexor? Thanks everybody.

Good enough as accessory. More important, get in some face pulls, rear delt flyes, band pull-aparts, etc. for full shoulder health.

>Good drills for squat mobility

The best thing for increasing mobility for a lift is to find your limiting factor and attack it directly. For me it's adductors. Find your limiting factor and focus on it.

>How to fix fucked hip flexor
In the shower massage it by slowly working towards down along the hip flexor, then same thing but zig zag across. The actual movement isnt that important just massage it while in a hot shower. Should help. If you start getting hip flexor problems often you might have a problem with your glutes.

I recommend setting your safeties high, and just trying to rack the weight you want to squat and hold.

See if you are stable. If it feels good to rack it and take your bracing breath, then lower your safeties and give it a rip. Be safe :/

literally no fucking clue whats wrong with my hamstring.

still not sure if I pulled it or if it was actually a small tear.

I was standing in my room today and leaned over on one leg not thinking and my hip made another loud popping noise (though much less than the first time) and now it hurts alot less, though its still tender.

Could it have been... like, pinched? or something? i have no fucking clue wtf is going on.

I've noticed for a long time that there is a very strong inverse relationship between how much bodybuilding accessories I do and my susceptibility to injuries. My osteopath says it's because it stops me from allowing weaknesses to develop which is what causes a lot of injuries.

Oi, the problem is I really like front squatting and the only "comfortable" rack position (i.e. on my shoulders and not slipping down) really, really, constricts my breathing.

Sorry to hear of your mystery pop, friend.

Might be worth a trip to the physio. Anti inflammatories, ice/heat, and high rep low/no weight movement to see how it's responding.

Hopefully it's just one of those 'mystery tweaks' that go by the wayside soon.

>I think it's best to just pretend it never happened and not think about it.

Yes. Also, when you're doing more bodybuilding, you're doing LESS intensity and volume for the big 3...

>really, really, constricts my breathing.
>I tried doing some fs the other day for the first time in a long time and after every 2nd or 3rd rep I would cough :/
Work on shoulder mobility.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGsMoJW-RDY

If not, you'll inevitably lose your rack position and either dump the bar or pass out.
>>

I'm still pretty worried about it, but given the last 20 minutes of events it doesn't seem SO bleak.

>>34926974
>Yes. Also, when you're doing more bodybuilding, you're doing LESS intensity and volume for the big 3...

Not for me. I've been doing more BBing this cycle and this is the most volume I've ever done on the comps lifts and their variants.
>>
How long do you guys train in the gym? I'm running Candito's linear program and it usually takes me between 1:15-1:45 min depending on if it's a lower/upper day. He says you should only train for like 45-60 min, so I don't know if I'm doing something wrong.
>>
>>34927016
>I've been doing more BBing this cycle and this is the most volume I've ever done on the comps lifts and their variants.
There IS a trend to go back towards 'classic' powerlifting methods (when bodybuilding and powerlifting were better bedfellows).

Hyper-specific programming has its limitations. And if you're not running gear to keep everything growing all the time, then neglected areas start to rear their ugly heads.

I'm pro-volume :)

>>34927028
>How long do you guys train in the gym?
Smolov takes me an hour to 1:15. Sheiko took me 1:30-1:45. Bulgarian was 30-60min. Depends on how much rest you need.
>>
>>34927028
Usually 1.5 - 2 hours if it's a large volume session. This cycle I've been trying to get my working sets done on squats and bench with about 10-20 minutes on the clock making my rests between 1-3 minutes.
>>
>>34926940

Even being on a low volume program like 5/3/1, I'm usually in the gym for ninety minutes, including warmup and mobility work. More if some of the regulars I like to shoot the shit with are there.

Reposting from QTDDTOT

I'm having an issue with bench press, I'm setting up okay, got a good arch and my shoulderblades are retracted, but about 10cm off my chest, my form goes to shit, the bar moves a bunch more towards my head instead of diagonally up. What would likely be the cause of this? Tried keeping my shoulders in, but at any decent weight it happens no matter how much I focus on it.
>>
>>34928722
Do you have any video of the phenomenon?

>>
>>34928768
I don't, sorry, no way to upload it. Best way to describe it is as if my lats gave out at stabilising the bar though, and instead of it being a diagonal movement, it moves the horizontal component all at once, then the vertical after. Not sure how to describe it otherwise.

depending on how egregious this might not be a bad thing. the bench is expected to have a j-curve. pic related. if it is ridiculously bad though it could be tricep weakness resulting in your overflaring very quickly? without a video we can't really be sure though.
>>
>>34928917
It definitely could be triceps actually, it's much worse than those are, it's more like the curve at the end of c except at the bottom and more extreme. So I'm guessing tricep accessories would be a good idea? Would adding in ones for biceps be a good idea too?
>>
>>34928917

It could also be a weak upper back and/or poor setup. Pretty much anything that compromises your tightness at the bottom will tend to induce more flare (flaring at the bottom of the bench is a lot like tipping forward in the squat or rounding on the deadlift - its kind of the default 'shit is now fucked up' failure mode for a bad lift).
>>
>>34928978
Could be weak upper back, my rows are about 15lbs lighter than my bench, though I've heard conflicting stuff about whether they should be higher or not, so didn't worry too much.
>>
>>34928962
biceps probably wouldn't help your problem but there's no issue with adding in light curls.
if its just lack of control at the bottom you can try spoto presses with submaximal weights (you pause just off of your chest for a couple seconds before pressing) and try to reinforce the correct position.
i feel like most of these problems aren't actually muscular imbalances/weaknesses, but rather poor cueing/a bad motor pattern that's just been ingrained through repetition, and the solution to that is to force yourself to move the right way until its natural.
>>34928985
tbf my rows are probably 100lbs weaker than my bench, since i never train bent over rows, and i've never felt like my back was my limiting factor in bench.
>>
>>34928990

Its rare, but weak biceps (or more typically, brachialis) can mess with bench technique if the disparity is enough that they can't stabilise the joint as effectively as they should. Its also a major contributor to elbow pain when benching heavy.

Wouldn't call them necessary but once in a while hammer curls really are the solution.
>>
>>34929006
i didn't mean to imply that bicep work can never help a bench, i meant that in this case i don't think that it was the solution. i agree that elbow pain + shaking and stuff can be caused by weak biceps
>>
>not doing atleast 3 curl variations after every workout totalling into 10x10 curls
>>
anybody want to help me decide what to workout tomorrow? my mid back is super sore, my upper back is pretty sore, and my glutes are pretty sore, all from my meet yesterday. so i think squats and deadlifts are out of the picture. what are some fun accessories i can do for bench/arms/shoulders/chest
>>
>>34929038

Sounds like a day of floor press + broing out.
>>
>>34928990
I think it might be stabilising muscles, I feel kinda shaky at points doing the lifts, any particular tricep accessories you'd recommend to help with it? I'll do a deload as well though, and work on the motion. Might deload and work back up with spoto, actually.

>>34929015
>>34929006
Ya, my biceps are shitty, and I used to get elbow pain when benching (don't anymore), so I might add in some hammer curls on alternating days. Is 3x5 optimal for curls?
>>
>>34929062
i like french press for triceps
LTEs are a very similar movement
close grip is always safe
Mike T and garrett blevins like JM press. there's a ton desu.
i'd say right rep ranges for curls. you don't really need to go so heavy that 3x5 is necessary. 3-5x8-12
>>
>>34929062

High rep for curls generally. I know some people who've done strength work for them (mostly because some comps throw in strict curls as a fun fourth lift once in a while) and it strengthens the biceps a lot but its also really prone to causing wrist and elbow pain. Not really necessary for general lifting.
>>
>>34929071
I'll try french press then, can't imagine more benching when it's my bench that's shit it going to be a great idea.
>>
>>34929123
if you stop benching it will be even worse when you go back to it

its a very form concious lift that needs technique dialling in

Nothing wrong with either of them. Texas Method is more long-term than Madcow imo, which is relatively easy to get stuck on but can work if you're fresh out of SS. You can also customize TM in a number of ways.
I wouldn't worry about 5/3/1 until you're a late intermediate/advanced lifter and even then there are better options. Making it work for pl requires some fiddling.

Athletes that think this way fail often.

Instead of thinking about the results conditionally, try to enjoy the process of getting stronger.

If you ENJOY lifting weights and you take pleasure in becoming stronger, you'll see better progress.

im of this opinion

hammering the bit where you fail only works to a point

martial artists dont punch through wood slowly, if they did it wouldnt break, you 'stick' because you are too slow, get stronger and youll be faster and wont decelerate to the point where the bar stops
>>
>>34930418
was that picture taken at Madtown Fitness
>>
>>34931143
for squat my sticking point is like 6 inches above depth, like I can shoot up and then hit a wall about 6 inches up. I have no idea what to do about that.

For bench, lockout is my weak point. The most fun thing I have tried is pin benching with the pins at a height where my elbows bend at 90 degrees. Also close grip bench, french press, rippetoe tricep extensions, cable tricep extensions, everything really. Beginning to just accept that my triceps are weak

For deadlift, lockout. double pause deadlifts have been really good for that though.
>>
>>34931338
Then there are the self-imposed mental roadblocks. For example, at seminars guys will say, "I always get stuck four inches above the chest."

So I'll throw it back to them. "Always?" I ask.

"Yes," they say, "four inches above my chest."

I'll throw it back again. "Always?"

Now they start to get it. They've conditioned themselves to expect to miss. It dominates their mental dialogue throughout the lift when they want to be focused on technique and performance cues.

Other guys are the opposite. They're getting fucked over by too much false bravado and "rah rah rah" type of crap.

Again, the mind should be a blank void except for precise technique cues. If you let yourself get too aroused or are surrounded by overly amped spotters, these important cues will likely be forgotten or ignored.
>>
>>34931338
Assuming this isn't a mental thing(>>34931378), you would probably be better off just doing close-grip work around the 70-80% mark.
>>
>>34931416
Whatever is being done never try and ease the bar. Always be trying to move it as fast as possible, throw it through the ceiling
>>
>>34931378
>just grip the bar and stand up dude
>>
>>34931378
I see what you mean, but I think that you're wrong about people expecting to miss a lift. Like when going for a hard bench rep for example, I don't actually think "ok, if I fail, I am going to fail because my right arm can't lockout". I always do the best I can. Just every rep that I've failed in the last 6 months has been because my right arm can't lock it out. I see that every time I fail is for the same reason.

Or deadlifts for example, I fully expect to lock out a weight if I can get it off the ground. I just historically have problems with back rounding, so lockout is harder.

It's never that I get into my own head about expecting to fail for whatever reason, it is just I see myself missing for the same reason over and over, so I say that is my weak point.

>>34931437
so are you an advocate of speed work? I have literally never done any speed work at all, I always try to control the weight as best I can. Or are you just saying that every working rep should be speed work

No im not one for speed work but every rep from bar to 1rm i try and move as quick as i can, even if it looks slow im putting 100% into trying to accelerate it as much as possible
>>
>>34931461
I think it's some Westside thing
>>
>>34931476
mid-rep, I never think about failing it because of x reason, I am always thinking about just moving the bar up. But I'm sure even you can see (or feel) yourself weaker in one position than another on some lift. Like, you don't expect yourself to fail a deadlift on lockout (or right off the floor) for example, but that's where failure happens for you in that spot more often than not. I don't think that acknowledging that you have a weak point causes you to fail because you got into your own head about it.

so you treat every rep like it is speed work, just don't call it that?

Nope, if you fail a lift that's it, you just failed, you didn't "get stuck" you just failed. You weren't strong enough on that day, or you weren't willing to grind out the rep, which is another problem that people with "sticking points" have since they are more likely to give up where they expect to fail rather than grind through it.

You can separate the lifts to stages at arbitrary points, at some parts you'll be weaker than others. Whichever part you're weakest at is what'll cause you to fail your lift, wherever that is leads to a sticking point.

600 is hard but a lot of people should be able to achieve it given enough time training
700 you prolly need deadlift oriented leverages to be able to achieve in your lifetime
