most sports science is so far out from what weightlifers/powerlifters actually do that when a paper is actually concerned with the movements in either sport, it doesn't take someone with more than a few months of lifting experience to spot a glaring flaw

then again /fit/ is content with copypasting a conclusion in an abstract instead of reading the paper so i guess that may not be so obvious

but if there's a book like SS filled to the brim with citations from well done studies then i'd like to see it

not that im doubting that validity of the science behind them (i have Supertraining on my list to read desu senpai) but these books are much more programming books than SS is. programming is little more than a footnote at the end of SS

most of SS is concerned with developing a mechanical model for efficient movement and applying it to the five lifts. i'm asking if there's a book like that with citations for the efficacy of the movements

I used to think no, now I think probably yes. The strongest counterargument I think would be Spoto, but (and not to IPF memeshill too hard) I think his goddam ridiculous absurd triceps allow him to use that narrower grip more effectively. And obviously nobody is getting arms like that without sterons. So, maybe. I do agree with that approach though for sure.

The goal is not to have the widest grip the goal is to bench the most weight. That might seem obvious but I think alot of people confuse the two. Another one is people who think the goal is to have the widest sumo start position.

Most people do best with a moderate grip.

Most people are not above average. Most people have not tried maximum grip for a significant amount of time. Most people are not aware that while squatting and deadlifts have tradeoffs that mean an easier ROM in one plane is sacrificed for a more difficult ROM in another, benching relies much more on minimising the angle between the upper arm and the fan-shaped pectorals.

I think once you get to a higher weight you'll start to change your opinion on grip width. I fully understand that there are outliers like hubbard who do very well with a max legal grip, but i do not believe that is the case for the majority of people.
