So I saw this thing in the picture and now I want to make a similar contraption. Mine would be much simpler and more of a clock chime than a musical instrument though. I need input on my design.

I'm only concerned about the marble escalator part so far. I'll worry about the rest later on.

A crude sketch of my design:

check out 'Denha' channel on youtube. He makes marble machines.

Why not use a chain with 'hooks' attached to grab the balls? Like mini fork lift prongs.
>>
>>986937
It would certainly look cooler than magnets but the thing is, with tiny magnets each magnet would be guaranteed pick up at least 1 ball.

Also, I can buy ANSI 35 steel chain and sprockets very cheaply from McMaster Carr, and simply glue tiny neodymium cubes to each link.

Maybe ring magnets would work better, as they would give a place for the balls to sit on.

I'm not so sure about that.

I'm very sure of it. I have tested my theory with one of these guys:

http://www.lightinthebox.com/216pcs-3mm-diy-buckyballs-and-buckycubes-magnetic-blocks-balls-toys-black_p1778781.html?currency=USD&litb_from=bing_shopping&utm_source=bingshopping&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=bingshopping

Just 1 of them can pick up 2 steel bearings with no problem.

It's a nice idea but those things are fuckhueg, I'm using ANSI 35 chain, which is only 3/16 across.

Whoops, forgot pic of them:

One of those cost like 25 bucks last I checked.

Am I missing something or all that machine does is play a xylophone with marbles?
>>
>>989340
>all that machine does

Yes, you're missing something.
>>
>>989340
It has a programmable wheel that will play a xylophone, bass and drums with marbles, yes.
>>
>>989340
Look at his youtube channel, he does a how it works video. Bit dry but informative.
>>
>>986588

>glue holding on the magnets

That just won't work. It won't last at all.

Use something else. Screws or something

me and my brother made this many years ago.
