i just got a flight stick for games (was a used one) and when i got it the joystick was catching on....nothing and making it very hard to control my aircraft, now i know what needs to be lubed but i don't know what is safe for plastics....any ideas?

Silicone is a very good choice for plastics. Look for silicone grease in any electronics store.

the best lube to use for plastic is powdered teflon
a place online named Spurlock Tools sells big jars of it fairly cheap (don't buy the tiny tubes for $$$)

I use teflon grease. It is a white stuff, mine was originally made for bicycle chains. Vaseline is a petrochemical product, it might cause the plastic to swell.
