If the black piece is plastic, the hex nut could only be there only for support.
The hex nut embedded in the plastic for structural strength with a rubber covered rivet through the middle.

Thats a rivet, son. You drill them out then pop a new one in to put it back. That looks like you tried to cut a slot for a phillips. Its not a screw. It wont work that way.
