Alright so I need ideas. I'm an all-around faggot and don't know jack about shit.

I have a 5 month old son, and I am starting a precious metal / coin collection for him.

I want a safe, secure place to store everything, but I also love the idea of all these coins and gold and shit just being kept in an old wooden chest, for aesthetic reasons.

Any ideas how to combine those two things? This collection might end up taking a considerable amount of space, especially if silver gets involved. I'll be throwing about $1000/year at it.

I'm not a carpenter or a locksmith, but I'm not an idiot either. I learn fast, and have just about every tool imaginable at my disposal (through work and friends). Let's keep this under $250 I guess.

Make a "frame" for the exterior; weld some angle steel along the edges, with fortification ribs in the middle. Then cut sections of hardwood and secure them to the "inside" of the box to the angle steel frame. Use hasps and hinges for hardware.

Supplemental post

These "treasure chests" can be accessed by someone with an axe or sledge. Faster and quieter with other tools like a grinder, drill, or saw. It shouldn't be for security of your PM collection, but it will look really cool and keep your kid out of it.
