Hey guys
I just bought this off craigslist for $80. Owner said he never plugged it in (kek ok).
I just plugged it in and it doesnt do shit. Where do I start trouble shooting?
I'd start with that huge wad of tape. a bad connection is the easiest and cheapest possibility and you'd need to replace that horrible cord to operate it safely anyways

See if there is a model or chassis number and a manufacturer on it somewhere. I Will see if I can get you some more info.
Don't get your hopes up that unit was made in germany and crouts make some complicated and annoying to work on equipment.
>>957013
Thanks brah

Behind the tape

>>957019
ok, that's scary, looks like someone nigger rigged a bridge rectifier.
>>957020
How do I know which tube is bad?
Sorry I dont know much about this old shit
Jesus christ, I think im just going to strip it and mod it up with a modern stereo so people can plug their iphones into it
>>957017
sams lists some stuff under Fonovox but not your unit. I can tell you that it was made between 1960 and 1961.
>>957028
that is unfortunate. I'd love to have it but I live in AZ.
>>957032
Im in Austin TX
>>957025
Has it got HT?
Is there a schematic inside it like pic related? If so post it.
>>957028
>>957025
oh man i think i just jizzed my pants.
i love old and crusty tech so much
>>957036
>schematics for ants
now thats trolling
>>957036
Idk what HT is.
No schematic
>>957040
Comes from here.
http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/loewe_opta_verona_stereo_5811tw.html
I'm hoping OP has a printed on stuck inside it somewhere.
>>957042
The best thing to do right now is put it aside and get learning then.
>>957028
Don't you dare, you turbo dildo.
>>957028
That's what I would do. With today's tech, should be able to stuff much more capabilities into it.
>>957055
>Thinks having a radio the size of a dishwasher is about 'stuffing capabilities into it'
You realize that you can make a radio the size of your fingernail, right? And that this wouldn't be an achievement in any sense of the word?
Taking something like this and gluing a walkman inside is missing the point entirely.
>>957028
if you want to do that you should leave the old garbage in there because it's pretty
>>957057
it's cheap old garbage. there's not a point
>>957060
I could have it working in a couple days and you could still plug your worthless iphone in to it.
The last one I did. Works great, I love that thing
>>957067
oh your the one I got the sams for and I'd the chassis.
>>957068
Haha still have them
>>957066
an iphone has a higher fidelity output than human ears and mid century crap built to look nice does not. The console in question already been hacked into a non-functioning fire hazard.
So long space cowboy
>>957077
bullshit
>>957095
welp, abandon thread
>>957028
I bet a women soldered that all together.
>>957019
It looks like someone replaced a rectifier tube with some really old diodes configured as a bridge rectifier. It is amusing
>>957077
> A digital source driving an analogue detector is better than an analogue source driving an analogue detector.
This is what audiophiles believe.
>>957095
you fool!
>>957028
dont even think of doing that !
if you do Im gonna be waiting for you with a bar
>>957095
moron
probably wat it would need to get it playing was replacing the capacitors under the chasis, only basic soldering skills needed
>>957009
You got ripped off. That is when they started making cabinets out of MDF and throwing cheap ass internals.
>>957028
This is the best course.
>Here's one I got for free in about the same condition as yours. Literal rats nest.
>>958800
I hope you plan on restoring that
>>957048
Why?
>>957025
>buying a snap on screwdriver
Its like the time my coworker bought a snap on pry bar and dead blow
We made fun of him for paying 80 for a logon on a goddamn piece of steel and some urethane
Did some cosmetic work

shit bruh that's beautiful! for a time i was looking for stuff like that on CL because I chop them into amp cabinets and other fun stuff. pic relates. i'm busy lately with a microphone refurbing bidness at the moment but i should expand and start selling custom jobs on old console radios and organs and shit. good looking work!
>>959172
Do you work for analog outfitters? There's a shop in the town I live in that does this exact thing. They make guitar tube amps and house them inside enclosures made from old organs and street signs and shit.
This type of re-use of old equipment inspired my current project. I built an amp out of an old JBL tweeter/woofer speaker enclosure.
>>959208
>I built an amp out of an old JBL tweeter/woofer speaker enclosure.
I have it all assembled at this point, it's bi-amped; each speaker is driven with its own amp. I need to put a relay inline with the woofer to disconnect it when it powers off. The woofer amp seems to drop to the negative rail when i power it off, making a huge "thump" and causing the cone to visibly flex for a moment.
>>959208
>Do you work for analog outfitters?
No but I should! Although I kinda like working for myself, it's a side-job but it's fairly lucrative, given the overhead costs anyway.
They do good work but they obviously stole my idea D:
>>959217
>They do good work but they obviously stole my idea D:
how much longer have you been doing it than they have?
>>959222
haha, idunno. i don't know how long they've been doing it. i did my leslie in '09 i think, and just started up refurbing mics this year. so really, i haven't established myself as a cabinet upcycler guy at all, but i might start! pic is my latest mic refurb though. got it for $20, got it working again and did a full clean and polish and replaced some junk hardware. i'm listing it for somewhere around $150
>>959226
Nice!
