I was a part time 3rd shift doughnut delivery guy for a summer back in high school.

It was an easy job, but it made socializing hard especially because there were twice as many deliveries on Saturday night than any other night. Gas stations would have their regular orders on regular days, and then have expanded standing orders from churches on Sundays.

Just enrolled In a 9 month TIG welding course that will get me certifications and after that plan on a course for mig, smaw/arc and pipe and aluminum welding with copper intro then fab work. Ultimately want to make art in my free time and do construction and fabrication.

Prior to this I completed 3 years of zoology focused on fisheries biology and aquatic conservation. I worked in "sustainable" aquaculture. Fuck killing the earth with farming man. I gave it up. Just turned 23 and did a stint working at Michaels arts and crafts. Super fucking gay. My fiancé is at grad school to get her masters and become a registered dietician so we are supporting each other with loans right now but by the end of it we should only have 30k total debt between us which is nothing compared to most dumb ass psychology majors.

It's hard moving across the country alone with no family and only each other. We are high school sweet hearts and since we did this I know we can do anything.

Also I bought a jeep wrangler so I have that going for me which is nice. Outdoor stuff is awesome in the west and shooting on BLM recreation land is awesome.

Network engineer here. Just started as a desktop tech for the company I'm at and they moved me up as I proved myself. 0 student loans, 0 degrees, but plenty of certification courses paid for by the company.

I consider myself really lucky because before this I was a tech at a Chevy dealership before a transmission jack failed and shattered my wrist. Dumb luck prevails sometimes....

Still miss wrenching sometimes though & I'm probably going to get a project car soon.

I have a degree in genetics and did some research for a while (my research saved the lives of unborn babies so it was kind of cool as it wasn't just research for research). But it was too 9-5 so I quit and I have been doing this and that for years (actually did it before my career in science so actually have been doing odd jobs my whole life).

Now I have just started my own business and I concentrate in the following fields:
Photographing baby swimmers. Means a lot of photo editing
Setting up and setting down an international exhibition. Means a lot of travel which sucks because I have two smallish children.
Biological field work at sea. Mostly diving, but all kinds of sampling really.

It was a four year university bachelor degree. It was a pretty tough program with less than half of the people who started making it to graduation. I'm in Canada where university isn't ridiculously expensive and I had scholarships so I finished only $20k in debt.

Some of my co-workers just did two-year programming courses at tech schools and have been able to self-teach enough electronics to handle the same work as me most of the time.

Network Administrator. I do contract work for the gub'ment, securing and patching various computers and servers on various networks. It's even less exciting then it sounds, but whatever. I'm good at it and get paid to do it. It's nice being able to fix security flaws and learn new things.

I'm still super new to /diy/ and am trying to learn as much as I can about woodworking, but it's been a complete shit show so far. I literally just bought a coping saw today, which I broke in about 10 minutes on a 2x4 while trying to cut on a curve for a coat hook. Then was using a shit-tier jig saw with the blade in upside down for about an hour and wondering why I had so much shake on the wood. I've never felt so retarded, but it's still fun and exciting.

And yet if you are actually stopped as a white they are MORE likely to end up killing you than if you are black.

It's almost like they're letting the blacks get away with all the crimes they commit at far far far higher numbers than whites, even if you anonymously ask their own communities about crime and who commits it.

yeah. I don't mind cops. Some are assholes, like the guy that gave me a ticket on an empty road in the middle of the night, but they're doing their job. can;t hold it against them most times. Hating someone based solely on their profession is childish. A job's a job.
Has diy been getting plenty of new traffic lately or is it just me?
>>
>>938254
What defines a job? What if you run a child porn site for a living? If you call it a job, does that alleviate you of all guilt and responsibility, because hey, it's just a job, man.

Or how about the CEO of a company that knows that the work his company is doing is having a dramatic negative effect on other people and the environment, like the CEO or Shell? Do you get off because you're just doing what's best for your company?
>>
>>938254

It does go a long way with cops. They are just enforcing laws that people voted for. What are they going to do? Not enforce laws so people are in eternal terror if the cops are going to turn around and decide to enforce a law one day?

Did you not think that tax evasion or parking tickets or selling cigarettes illegally wouldn't end up with you getting shot by a cop? That's what law is.
>>
>>938226

Oh, it was a bonus prize that it could survive 3phase, the install was over a decade old. No, the real prize with industrial grade kit is the hardware can be left, and I'm talking about stuff that is, at it's very core, not that much different in terms of functionality to an Arduino, but it can be left running in waist height sawdust, under the eaves of a slaughterhouse, running sausage machines and bakeries for upwards of 30 years with minimal or even no maintenance. Most people don't even notice some of this stuff UNTIL the control panel rusts through and shorts out the power supply or some genius sticks a screwdriver in the wrong hole and connects the three phase to the 24v line.

I love my job really. I get to see all the sins of maintenance engineers and managers who failed to keep backups and spares. In many cases I am the last line between a company and a ÂŁ30k refurbishment because the company that originally built their factory doesn't exit any more and the people that created the software died or retired just before the Internet became mainstream.

I mainly do tig welding, but my function requires me to do a fair amount of sheetmetal work too. We mainly work with stainless steel, mostly 1,5-2 mm thick.
We have a wide range of products, and do a lot of custom work with a heavy focus on the finishing. everything has to look as pretty as possible, which often means a lot of grinding and polishing.
It's a fun job, mainly because of the versatile work. We do very little production, so most things I make are either one-off, or small amounts.

I'm surprised there is so many soon to be welders here. I'm about to finish my associates degree in welding myself. All I have left is this last semester on 2g 5g and 6g pipe. I already landed 3 good jobs welding structural. Two of those 3 jobs payed 26/hr and 28/hr with 80$ per diem. It's most I've ever made and I loved every bit of it. The work, the travel, staying with a roommate in a hotel that welds with you getting drunk every night. I've been saving money for a while now and getting a fat tax return. Going to buy my first welding truck/rig after I graduate and hit the pipeline. Highly recommend this trade for anyone that is lost or stuck. Keep in mind I've never burned a rod or wore a hood prior to school so it's not too late to start at any age. (Currently 23)

Yes that sounds perfectly normal.
One time I was on a steel suspended coaster where your feet dangle and I felt one of my feet brush a truss on a support column. Looking back it was probably nowhere near and just felt close because of the speed and air pressure or something.
But the moral of the story is I rode it again because I'm not a quivering poofter.
Not even the scariest ride experience I've had.

Custom made orthotics/ modifying orthopedic shoes to accommodate how shitty people's feet eventually become. The money's decent, owner is great, but the people are just outright fucking terrible. Cheap, greedy, con-artists that try to manipulate their way into deep discounts even if it means we close up shop because no profit.
>>
>>940466
Flat feet degenerate here.
Are custom insoles actually worth the money over standard birkenstock ones and such?

You can be honest, we're all friends here :^)
>>
>>940470
Accept now that you will always be flatfooted and the only thing now you can do is make your feet comfortable.

Yes. Birkenstock are rigid supports and are not built from casts of your arches, so they will always be off. ( Each of your arches are different between the two of them and each of your feet are different sizes) We found custom semi rigid thermacork insoles are the most supportive, while being the comfortable to wear due the natural "give" of the material, the ability to offload pressure where there's pain, and add as much cushion as need be.

Avoid buying orthotics from Podiatrists, especially the hard polypropylene orthotics they offer, everyone ends up hating. They are extortionately overpriced for something they outsource and are not able or have the knowledge to modify if it doesn't fit properly. If they can adjust them, they do at an exorbitant fee on top of the price of the orthotic.

We deal with hundreds of podiatrists, they refer patients to us, we know how they operate.

Look for Pedorthists. They specialize in only orthotics and orthopedic shoes.
>>
>>940499
That's actually pretty helpful, thanks breh
>>
>>940500
Also, flatfeet will only get worse if they are not supported. Even if it means buying an over-the-counter insole with an arch to save money, do it. You may not be in pain now, but you will be eventually, I've seen it hundreds of times. Good luck.
>>
>>940466
I'm just pissed because my fucking doctor man says 'yeap this guy needs orthotics' and insurance is like 'does he have diabeetus? Because if he doesn't then he doesn't get any coverage.'

This is bullshit. Flat feet are not a problem if the muscles are properly exercised and trained and the foot is allowed to spread naturally. Most peoples foot muscles are very weak and messed up from a lifetime of never having to support themselves. I have flat feet, and always had problems until I gave up supportive shoes and switched to a combination of bare feet and zero drop minimalist shoes. I have actually developed a bit of a natural arch.

Dont get too caught up on semantics, its modern medicine in the same league as the ones building custom orthotics for amputees and wreck victims. Not only can ignoring it cause severe foot problems it can over time cause knee, hip, and lower back damage.

Its like the people who work on computers saying that it feels better to have bad posture. Maybe not now, maybe not next year, but you WILL eventually have neck and back problems, nerve problems.

It is literally bad posture at every point starting from your foot all the way to your spine, holding the whole weight of your body.

My parents rent so we move every couple years, and I have a special needs sister who I pretty much take care of.

My 2 brothers moved out and got on with their lives years ago, now I feel a sense of obligation to this trap because I know my sister will never live on her own. Its like I adopted a teenage kid against my will, and when my parents croak ill be stuck on the hook taking care of her. And I wont even get a house or any asset of money from them

It weighs heavily on me because like I said, as a dropout I have no real easy outs into a career. Having a bad back cuts most manual labor out too.

But hey fuck it, things always turn out in the end.

That works, though. It's the placebo effect. Why do you think people cut themselves? It's a physiological response to let the cutter and others around the cutter know they are infected.

It's the same reason DNA can differentiate between a pit bull and a golden retriever and tell you what breeds are mixed into a mutt. Dogs are the same species but different races essentially within the species. Just like different races exist in the human species. It doesn't mean one race is necessarily better than another just as one dog breed is not better than another but you're retarded to think race is not a genetic certainty that is related to health and behavior.

>>
>>942634

I'm not him, but there are differences in DNA within the same race just as significant as the differences between different races, are there not?

Race is indeed a social construct because if you and community of your race(let's say you're white) lived in the African Sahara for thousands of years, even without mixing with the locals you would mostly be indistinguishable from them to the naked eye.
>>
>>942721
Yes, but no.
An individual's genotype may place him well outside the average for his race.

That doesn't mean his race doesn't have an average. --Yao Ming is a tall Chinese guy. That doesn't mean the average Chinese heigh is 7'6".

This matters when bleeding hearts look at racial aggregates in society and decide they need to fix something. The race is there. Yes, any individual can be an outlier of the race. But the race is still there as an average, and that is how they get counted in all the crime, education, and poverty numbers.

Yes, let your foot which naturally spreads flat, flatten out. Yes, pronate and cause strain on the knees, hips and lower back who are desperately trying to align your body to correct your bullshit. Don't worry because it's natural. You obviously never worked with someone who had an actual medical condition.
Also, the majority of people always fit themselves too small and too narrow in supportive shoes because they think the know more than anybody, but they end up fucking their own feet up even more.
Take someone's advice since your obviously have no idea what you're doing.

>>
>>942807
Wider the width, deeper the toe box.
Sounds like the shoe is too short though.

Easiest way to tell, make sure your longest toe is a index finger's width from edge of the shoe. If it's not, the shoe's too short and not matter the width you're always going to rub callouses if you're jammed in the shoe.

Working with feet everyday, so many problem stem from short and narrow shoes.

This place is old as hell and while some of it is new construction a lot is replacing lines that are rusted through and about to blow out. welders are also out there building platforms on New equipment and redoing stairs and such. They just replaced all the platforms around a massive steam generator at one plant, the structure is four levels with 2 sides, about 150 ft tall and 400ft wide, took about 2 months.

I am in the same boat. finished highschool though. problem was that I have a learning disability caused by a brain injury. slow processing speed/ADD. I am diagnosed NOW. but back then I was going to psychologists trying to find out what the problem was. this is a true story. the school counsellor told me that she faked the results of my IQ testing that I requested. I knew something was wrong. but she just assessed me as average intelligence because she thought i just wanted to prove how intelligent I was and it'd just give me a big head. I heard lazy a lot. when I went back to get a copy of the results, "anon-kun I just faked those results because I thought it was the best thing for you." so I took a long time trying to work through it. flunked out of university. got a dead end job for 18 months working at a computer store. even fucked that up. mostly because I had issues with their returns methodology. also couldnt concentrate for shit. Thanks but I'm fine, I'm not a Stephen Hawking but I can learn pretty quick. During my high school time I also went to the psychologist a couple of times to helping me choosing what I should follow as a career, and during the IQ and capacity tests I scored slightly above average results, something like 120 IIRC. My only problem is the laziness and accepting orders from others, I just like doing things in my own way, which crashes with the working market.

I'll just give it couple more months and then decide what to really do with my life. I either go back study and at least finish high school in some manual trade course or pack up my shit and go travel a year or so with the money that I have. No worries.

The programming I do is C/Assembly at the firmware level.

IMHO Labview is never used outside of university lab projects. That's the only place I've ever seen it used and I've done a little of everything in my career.

Industrial Designer.
Kind of fell into that nomenclature, as it pretty much means I make anything and everything, or at the very least project manage.

I just started a CNC fab/industrial design business with a friend, we are looking at it as more of a branding lab, where we can make all sorts of whatever we want. Looking to break into the public sculpture game soon.

My background is in carpentry, finish and structure, steel/welding structural and aesthetic.

Just built a parklett but the client was too much of a cheap ass to get it powdercoated..... I tried to clear coat but it rusted anyways,(like I expected, its El nina year) no other option but to use a rust reformer then paint lol.....

Teaming up with a buddy who has a pretty good sized laser cutter to share a shop, should have some sweet shit out soon.

Habitat technician here. The company I work for take abandoned agricultural land or streams wrecked by development and turn it into God tier fish/wildlife habitat. Lots of fun. Would recommend

Arcade game technician.

I started off with zero education in the field, and it was a tough adjustment when I got started. Had to relearn troubleshooting basics, mostly because I was self-taught and needed to understand parts and tools better. There were a lot of times when I didn't know what a tool was called or what it was actually for, only what I had been able to use it for in the past. Thankfully, the guys I worked with were willing to teach my little by little, so long as I worked hard to improve.

It's an interesting job; the industry has all different types of people to meet. The actual maintenance of the games isn't the difficult part, it's everything else that gets in the way of that. I've only been doing this for 3 years and these days I'm much more concerned with budget constraints and scheduling conflicts than actually fixing things. Shit, if all I had to do was come to work and fix things I would be a lot less stressed out.

Overall it's a nice job for someone who isn't educated in the field, but I don't want to do this for much longer. Need to get back in school, ASAP.

Service electrician for 3 years, I've seen some shit.

Those burnt fuses is from some apprentice deciding to take out the rail under the fuses while the main fuse is turned on. All on his own initiative... His face was black with soot and he was screaming while crawling away from the fusebox. It was a 500A fuse that went.

The pleb apprentice is the one to the left in the couch. Also a lot of other weirder things have happened but I don't take a picture of everything.

darn, won't let me upload webm with sound. so you can't see the apprentice ;_;

Data analyst for a laundry company.

Not a small laundry, we do ~12T of laundry daily, and I'm supposed to bring us up from 98% deliveries on full and on time to 100%

Cool job though, light on data analysis, heavy on programming. Seems I'm now supposed to be some kind of plant support person, programming the folding machines to handle multiple types of different items is next on my to do list. Currently working on streamlining the production process from the washers to the ironers to ensure zero machine down time.

Studied maths, turns out I ended up using the practical skills that I learned while studying a lot more than anything else. Seriously, if you are reading this and are 18, learn to program a computer, even if it's just basic macros in excel you'd be surprised how useful it could be.

Pic semi related, we have two similar continuous batch washers

They really are, I spent three years going nowhere when I was 21. Fucking hell I wish I could have that time back. But I got comfortable, and used to doing my shit job. Completely my fault, really regret it.

How hard is it to become a TIG welder? I want to weld in Alaska to pay my way through college.

Also what is the general risk of losing a finger? My hands are really valuable for me (going to major in music) so I don't want to lose any.
>>
>>944761
the only ways you really loose fingers as a welder is if you dont lotto, have an accident with a grinder or chop saw or putting your fingers in a pinch point
>>
>>944761
TIG in Alaska? Wut? Do stick and get certified for pipe. TIG is used mainly in controlled environments, like manufacturing. The work in Alaska that PAYS is all outside where your shielding gas just gets blown away.

Stick and get certified.

Sorry I'm not to savvy on the subject. I'm taking classes in a few months and thought to ask around here.

Is stick too hard for a beginner? Sorry if I'm being a burden by asking by the way
