What is your honest opinion of Jimmy Diresta?
>>
>>932454
Jimmy, stop posting this thread, you are annoying
>>
>>932454
Do I need to have an opinion of him? The guy could be a fucking cuckold but it doesn't really matter because it's not his personal life that he broadcasts.

Go back to /b/
>>
He's clever, should weld more.
Uses band saws incorrectly sometimes. But he's good at what he does.
>>
>>932475
You've got my curiosity. Incorrectly?
>>
>>932478
There's a video where he uses a circular saw for rounding out a shallow depression in a board, that's what springs to mind first
>>
>>932454
I like his hat.
>>
>>932454
He is sloppy. He knows it too because I've seen him use fish eye lenses to cover up the fact that a tool cabinet he made wasn't square and the doors didn't line up. That said, he does make interesting projects.

I'd put him as a forth tier craftsman. First you have masters like Roy Underhill and Paul Sellers. Then you have skilled journeymen like half the good peeps on YouTube. Next there are skilled amateurs like Matthias Wandel and Steve Ramsey. Then you have Diresta. Better than half the hacks on YouTube but still in the hack territory. Jack off all trades, master of none.
>>
i cant watch his videos

he puts his stupid logo on everything so the logo is visible in every single scene of the video, really obnoxious

Really like and respect what he does. Sure he's not the best woodworker or welder in the world but he doesn't claim to be. I picked up lots of cool little tips (or what some fags would call 'hacks') from his videos which have inspired me to try and be more inventive in my own problem solving.
I almost exclusively work with wood but what other channel are you going to pick up nicely edited, concise and interesting videos ranging from book binding to latex molds with no moron yammering on about some nonsense before hand?
Good channel. I want one of his ice-picks
>>
>>932465
I think you should follow your own advise retard.
>>
>>932571
>Jack off all trades, master of none.
this.
>>
>>932581
Why? He produces content where he makes things. He's good at what he does. Does that mean I should have an opinion of him?

What if he goes home at night and hits his wife and rapes downs kids? I don't know that because the content he produces has nothing to do with him beyond his workshop.

So why do I need to have an opinion of him?

If you want an opinion regarding his workmanship I could formulate one should I care enough but that's not what was asked... Retard.
>>
>>932593
What part of asking what somebody people think of Jimmy Diresta equals to what ever nonsense you just wrote?
Every sane person would understand that the OP is asking about his work, not whether or not beats his family, rapes kids or is cuck you warped fucking faggot. So I repeat that you should follow your own advise and fuck off back to /b/ or /trash/ you retarded mong.

I was referring to him using band saws as files, bad for blades, especially with metal, depending on the saw it can damage calibration as well.
>>
>>932571
I'd rather have Jimmy Diresta outfitting my house rather than Chris Schwartz, Roy Underhill, Paul Sellers and all those other cucks, they all just recreate past works while Jimmy is creative and has his own eye and a style all his own.
>>
>>932680
The dude has atleast 10 bandsaws and a shitloaf of blades. I'm sure he wont mind resharping one or even throwing it out sooner rather than later for the sake of a project.
>>
>>932695
iirc he's got a finger that's all fucked up from being reattached after a bandsaw accident
>>
>>932747
Tablesaw.
>>
>>932751
Fucking nasty thing to happen, but you don't see too many chippies with all their fingers intact
>>
>>932454
He really likes his last name.
>>
Fuck Jimmy.
Clickspring is where the good stuff is! The video editing is next level compared to him.
>>
>>934082
this guy knows whats up
>>
>>932454
You can clearly see he's no master in his craft and also quite sloppy, but i have to admit that i find him very motivational.
Don't overthink it, just start building it.

I also like his video style, those fast forward videos are quite entertaining.

I could do without his homestories, though.
>>
>>932610
>what's your opinion of Jimmy Diresta
>what's your opinion of Jimmy Direstas work

One of these is not like the other, no matter how hard you try and make it so.
>>
Alright, which one of you idiots shut down the trash compactors on the the detention level?

Have you morons any idea how long it takes to get them moving again? It smells like wet wookie already.
>>
>>934133
Whoopsie.
>>
>>932691
Sorry. Theres rednecks out in the boonies where I live that have more artistic talent then jimmy. Hes 7/11 on the scale. Paul and roy also do things the right way. While indeed they could use power tools to speed shit up. That isnt the point of their teachings... If you weren't such a turbo autist you would understand.
>>
>>932454
I respect his method of doing and finish as fast as he can a project.
I use to plan more things and do less, but sometimes you have to be like jimmy and just finish something.
>>
>>932518
it's common to do that, you use the circle saw as a router to make concave profiles.
>>
>>932578
It's irritating. Like do get he would mark his tools with his brand but putting the effort to paint his logo to a block of wood that he will cut to pieces is little to much
>>
>>932454
No idea what this was until thread.
This is just shop porn is what this is, its wonderful and I love it. The fumbling with the metal bits pleases my autism.
>>
>>932454
I like him. He's not the best at anything, but he's good at everything. You can't really compare him to other people that do a single thing really well, you don't see sellers machining, you dong see clickspring woodworking, you don't see Mattias welding.... but you see Jimmy do all of these, sometimes in the same video, and not terribly, even if not greatly.
>>
>>935664
I agree with you but Mattias does weld occasionally. I don't know shit about welding though so I can attest to his skill at it. Probably ugly as sin but strong as fuck like his woodworking.
>>
who?
>>
>>934131
Use your context clues! I know it's hard, buddy, but this is 4th grade! You're a big boy now.
>>
>>935664
Keith Rucker -
Machinist
Woodworker
Welder
Metal Castings

All of his work is top quality, when he makes a mistake, he shows you, then he fixes it.

Also dat intro music is pleasant.
>>
>>935887
True, I'm subscribed to him as well, but I find his videos somewhat more.. detailed. I don't mind, but I watched an hour video on forging a bolt to repair a saw mill once. I learn a lot, but still doesn't seem like a valid comparison. Jimmy would be like the elected king of diy, where Rucker would be the ceo of renaissance inc.
>>
>>935887
Real nice videos, but i can't stand fat people breathing audibly into the mic like that.
>>
>>934082
Clickspring is great. I'm also a fan of Ben Heck show

I like low tier guys like
Darbin Orvar and I like to make stuff too though :S
>>
>>934082
>Clickspring is where the good stuff is!
I love this guy, but sometimes he scares me with his methods. Maybe it's just because I'm used to working much harder metals though.
>>
>>932454
When you have to slap your name all over your work it proves you are only an average maker. Your work should speak for itself and not need a giant DIRESTA smeared all over it.
>>
>>934228
Fuckin thank you, pause any of his videos at any frame and you can almost always see at LEAST 3 "DiResta" shit sprays on everything in his fuckin cave of a workshop. its like he made the stencil one day and went apeshit with it
the font's annoying too

>>
Jamie Mantzel is my favorite youtuber

been following him since he built a big dome out of Styrofoam coolers then built a giant 8 legged robot now he lives on an island in panama building big solar powered catamarans out of fiberglass and is building a castle
>>
I only recently started watching his stuff, and I think he's a perfect example of how you don't have to be very good at what you do in order to make awesome stuff.

I mean the fit and finish on his stuff is bad enough you can see it in the youtube video, his welds are atrocious, he goes ham sandwich on everything with that brad nailer, and still, at the very end, he's got a really cool something-or-other that gives me so many ideas for stuff to do.

Besides that, his videography is good, and he balances detail with interest in the composition of his videos

I just don't like that he crunched up a restorable classic Dart to make tables.
>>
>>937621
hello Jimmy
>>
>>932518
Lots of ways to do that. My friend did it to make a run of crown molding.

Clamp two boards over your table saw at an angle, one on each side of the blade, just wide enough for the boards you are using.

Run the board over the blade and advance thew blade up a tiny bit each pass. Use a push stick if you want to keep your fingers.
>>
>>937362
dat regrettable acting tho
>>
>>937619
He does it to hide brands and avoid giving viewers the impression that he promotes them.

Until he makes a deal with said brand, like that DeWalt toolbox video. It's a standard practice.
>>
>>937846
top jej look at any other (Matthias, Howarth, etc) and theyve got brands of all sorts
>>
>>938316
So?
>>
>>932454
jack of all trades, master of none

questionable techniques

entertaining tho

although i wish he can use better lighting and clean up his shop a bit
>>
>>937650
I don't watch diresta but I like this attitude.

You see so many posts on this board "will doing this simple thing to these cheap materials work" with a hundred serious replies ranging from the "better get a pro" to the overly technical.

Just have a go. If everything goes to shit you can always spend another ten bucks and try again.
>>
I like how he used a rubber tipped pencil to hold down small work pieces on the table saw... now every shill from Steve off WWMM to Matt Cremona is doing it.

It's a good idea but it's like, was it really that ground breaking?

Maybe I just feel bitter that half arsed wood workers are so popular.

You don't do or show anything unless you're getting paid for it.
It's capitalism 101.
>>
>>937846
It's a very good practice imho.

>>938316
A lot if howarths tools haven't been manufactured in the last 50 years, so if anything, he's doing a great thing by keeping those gems in working order and on display. I love the look of old machinery and when it works it's fantastic.

Matthias also doesn't think twice if giving his own opinion of things as he's isn't a shill. So yeah we can see what brand tools he's using and if they're crap he'll say so.

As for diresta painting everything, as already mentioned, he gets a lot if views and that's capitalism. He had a video tour of his shop and he mentioned if tools were given to him and by whom so he's honest about it but as said, if he's paid for the tools he doesn't owe that tool company brand placement or advertising so I can't fault him for it.

And imagine having that many subs and constantly getting asked about what do you think of xyz brand abc tool. It takes focus away from what he's doing.
>>
i like the sound of the videos lol

>>
>>939249
It's a great way to get a 1/4" piece of bar through your temple. At the college I went to, some chucklefuck left the chuck key in what we called the "big boy". Chuck was like 3-4 feet in diameter and weighed a few hundred pounds. He turned the lathe on and the key flew out, hitting a passing instructor 40 feet away, breaking three ribs. It's the same as trigger discipline on a gun, the chuck being the trigger and the key your finger. If it's not being used, it doesn't belong on it.
>>
>>939249

Because you're liable to forget it's there, turn on the lathe, and now you have a chunk of metal possibly flying at yourself or someone nearby.

A lot of chuck keys come with a spring-loaded pin (or a spring around the key) that prevents you from ever leaving it in for exactly this reason.
>>
>>939440
>>939435
Why the fuck isn't there an interlock on it if it's that dangerous?
>>
>>939467
newer lathes do have one.

but im not puting that shit on mine
>>
>>939467
Because instead of adding expensive, complex parts to 50 year old machines, they expect you to do what all machinists in history have done. Not be a fucking retard and take the chuck key out. Literally the first thing they drill into your head.
>>
>>939478
There's no reason for the parts to be "expensive" or "complex".

And counting on people to not do something stupid is precisely the way you get people fucking killed.
>>
>>939482
>There's no reason for the parts to be "expensive" or "complex".
I'm really quite curious, what kind and where would you put an interlock on a 50 year old lathe so it knows if the chuck key is in or not without it being complex or expensive? Really it's about drilling it till it's second nature. At the college I'd call anyone out if they did it and eventually you just stop doing it.
>>
>>939440
If this is a real problem maybe you shouldn't be around machinery. I mean it's fucking hard to miss.
>>
>>932454

I thought that was just a coincidence with the name and he was trying to play on it.
