He is sloppy. He knows it too because I've seen him use fish eye lenses to cover up the fact that a tool cabinet he made wasn't square and the doors didn't line up. That said, he does make interesting projects.
I'd put him as a forth tier craftsman. First you have masters like Roy Underhill and Paul Sellers. Then you have skilled journeymen like half the good peeps on YouTube. Next there are skilled amateurs like Matthias Wandel and Steve Ramsey. Then you have Diresta. Better than half the hacks on YouTube but still in the hack territory. Jack off all trades, master of none.

Really like and respect what he does. Sure he's not the best woodworker or welder in the world but he doesn't claim to be. I picked up lots of cool little tips (or what some fags would call 'hacks') from his videos which have inspired me to try and be more inventive in my own problem solving.
I almost exclusively work with wood but what other channel are you going to pick up nicely edited, concise and interesting videos ranging from book binding to latex molds with no moron yammering on about some nonsense before hand?

I only recently started watching his stuff, and I think he's a perfect example of how you don't have to be very good at what you do in order to make awesome stuff.
I mean the fit and finish on his stuff is bad enough you can see it in the youtube video, his welds are atrocious, he goes ham sandwich on everything with that brad nailer, and still, at the very end, he's got a really cool something-or-other that gives me so many ideas for stuff to do.
Besides that, his videography is good, and he balances detail with interest in the composition of his videos
I just don't like that he crunched up a restorable classic Dart to make tables.

Lots of ways to do that. My friend did it to make a run of crown molding.
Clamp two boards over your table saw at an angle, one on each side of the blade, just wide enough for the boards you are using.
Run the board over the blade and advance thew blade up a tiny bit each pass. Use a push stick if you want to keep your fingers.

A lot if howarths tools haven't been manufactured in the last 50 years, so if anything, he's doing a great thing by keeping those gems in working order and on display. I love the look of old machinery and when it works it's fantastic.
Matthias also doesn't think twice if giving his own opinion of things as he's isn't a shill. So yeah we can see what brand tools he's using and if they're crap he'll say so.
As for diresta painting everything, as already mentioned, he gets a lot if views and that's capitalism. He had a video tour of his shop and he mentioned if tools were given to him and by whom so he's honest about it but as said, if he's paid for the tools he doesn't owe that tool company brand placement or advertising so I can't fault him for it.
And imagine having that many subs and constantly getting asked about what do you think of xyz brand abc tool. It takes focus away from what he's doing.

It's a great way to get a 1/4" piece of bar through your temple. At the college I went to, some chucklefuck left the chuck key in what we called the "big boy". Chuck was like 3-4 feet in diameter and weighed a few hundred pounds. He turned the lathe on and the key flew out, hitting a passing instructor 40 feet away, breaking three ribs. It's the same as trigger discipline on a gun, the chuck being the trigger and the key your finger. If it's not being used, it doesn't belong on it.

Because you're liable to forget it's there, turn on the lathe, and now you have a chunk of metal possibly flying at yourself or someone nearby.
A lot of chuck keys come with a spring-loaded pin (or a spring around the key) that prevents you from ever leaving it in for exactly this reason.

I'm really quite curious, what kind and where would you put an interlock on a 50 year old lathe so it knows if the chuck key is in or not without it being complex or expensive?
