Matthias's sled involves a single miter slot runner and using a carpenter square to get it perpendicular, saying "i've never seen a carpenter's square out of square."
I trust what he says, but I used the 5-cut method and feeler gauges to get it into square, then stuck a large engineer square to the fence and measured deviations with stationary dial indicator. So, right now the sled is square to at least within one thou over a 4 feet span, which is as close as my dial indicator with one thou resolution can get it.
I made the runners out of osage orange.
It's a hard and durable wood and will suit.
However, after I attached them I put a coat of minwax fast dry polyurethane on the bottom. I didn't think one coat would change the tolerance of the runners too much. But after one coat the runners binded up so I had to sand them.

Nice sled, but it's just a jig, a tool to be used. And it will get used. And then you will need to make a new one.

I agree, but really, you should put a lot more care into making jigs and tools because they will be used as references when making stuff with them.
If a drawer is off by a mm no one really gives a shit. If your sled cuts 89 degrees instead of 90, it's worse than worthless.

I had generated some scrap wood, so I decided to make Microjig Gripper-style pushblocks.
I was really on the fence about buying these, since they're so highly recommended, but I decided that the $80 or so they want for these to be a ripoff.
I started building the basic design by gluing up some butt joints. for obvious reasons I have to avoid using metal fasteners, so I'm going to pound in some dowels after the butt joints dry.
In the foreground is my dust cyclone with wood lid.
I scratched out a handle shape on some nasty ass plywood.
I'm going to cut it out with a jigsaw, then refine it with a router. When I like the shape, I will use it as a template to create a pair of handles out of the same nice birch 3/4 ply that I used for everything else.
The glue has set enough for me to drill holes in it, so I took off the clamps and set the dowels in.
I'm a big fan of dowels. They're the strongest way to join wood, but not at all hard to use.
Readying myself to use the jigsaw.....
I suck terribly at the jigsaw but I've seen such nice work come out of them from others. Maybe if I take my time....

It's coming along...
Then I hit it with the file...then sanded the corners and the face nice and smooth. Almost looks good enough to actually use. But the inside is jagged and shit. Doesn't matter. The router's bearing won't register the terrible inside handles if I set the depth to the nice part.
I cut off the dowels on the table saw, leaving them about 1/16" proud. They will disappear when the sander hits them.

There have been perfectly acceptable guards on saws for sixty years. Everyone takes them off our never installs them.
I was upset with how xboxbox huge the handles were, so I chopped off a bunch from the sides and added the round freehand with the straight bit cutter. Then I switched to a roundover bit to make it nicer to the touch.
I glued the handles on - like before, just a simple butt joint. Tomorrow I'll pound in some dowels to give it some balls. I don't even want metal in the handles- though if the saw blade got that high up close to my hand, chipping the blade is the last of my concerns.
Then I glued and nailed on some braces, chopped off some excess wood from the sled, and called it a day.

60 years? Longer than that mate. I've got a saw with a guard with a patent date of 1944. And thats just ones that I personally own so it was easy for me to look up. I'm sure theres older examples out there.
