I made this cheapo projector lamp thingy.
It's a single high-powered LED and a rolled up transparency sheet with a pattern printed on it.
The main complexity comes from the custom algorithm I made that transforms any kind of image into a projectable version. It's something like reverse raytracing - from a surface to the light source.
The pincushion effect is due to shittily assembled top - it requires pretty tight tolerances for straight projection.

Can you show how it looks with a "real" image instead of just a test grid pattern? This looks like it could be a really fun thing to mount on a wall and have like a picture you can turn on and off.
First of all, there is no such thing as a single high powered LED for consumer use. Second the whole image is clearly CG, especially those shitty curtains. Light projectors are extremely common in all 3D animation studios, and most game engines. Probably took a screen shot from Unity Engine. Nice hoax, and decent CG you did but a really shitty DIY.

Made a photo projection, It came out pretty reasonable looking. I'm gonna need a bubble lens for the light though. I'm pretty sure that'd help focus the projection better.

Nice! You treat the light as basically a point source? Did you have to calibrate anything. Incorporate the diameter of the cylinder in the algorithm?
You want to take the pictures you get from your camera and run them through gimp, photoshop, or similar.
Then you save them with a logical filesize, never over 90% quality. And I mean NEVER. For anything higher quality you should NOT be using JPEG.
You should lower it until there is an unacceptable amount of loss of detail/noise.
This, for reference, is 75% quality in the gimp.

you can't really do it with bulbs - you need a single, sharp, omnidirectional light. Bulbs emit from filament or diffuse the output in other ways.

That's what I figured. I also wondered if you could replace the cylinder with a cone. Pic related.
Since a cone is developable (zero Gaussian curvature) you can flatten it in the plane after a cut from base to apex. So you could still print a transparency and wrap it on the cone.
The advantage would be you wouldn't have to have it right on the ceiling or floor... there wouldn't be a white disk in the middle of the projection. In theory anyway.

That's a really nice idea!
Cones are a bit trickier to assemble and use though, it'd require some sort of a base to stand up on or at least some visible supports, sort of reducing the effect.
I'm gonna adapt the algorithm at some point and test it out. If executed correctly, it could look really neat.
