I made this cheapo projector lamp thingy.
It's a single high-powered LED and a rolled up transparency sheet with a pattern printed on it.
The main complexity comes from the custom algorithm I made that transforms any kind of image into a projectable version. It's something like reverse raytracing - from a surface to the light source.
The pincushion effect is due to shittily assembled top - it requires pretty tight tolerances for straight projection.
>>900391
Shit, no idea why the image appears flipped on 4chan. Oh well.
Here's a shot of the internals - it's a buckpuck driver, powered by USB. I should also probably note that this is babby's first electrical engineering

post algorithm
Can you show how it looks with a "real" image instead of just a test grid pattern? This looks like it could be a really fun thing to mount on a wall and have like a picture you can turn on and off.
First of all, there is no such thing as a single high powered LED for consumer use. Second the whole image is clearly CG, especially those shitty curtains. Light projectors are extremely common in all 3D animation studios, and most game engines. Probably took a screen shot from Unity Engine. Nice hoax, and decent CG you did but a really shitty DIY.

>Second the whole image is clearly CG
lolwut? well then im very impressed with OPs CG skills
>>900423
Must be fake, I've worked with high power LED's and they don't project out nearly as far, the beam is still pretty narrow
>>900391
That's really cool.
>>900403
nah man, who knows, maybe I'll go the Kickstarter route with this. It's basically stereographic projection to a cylinder though, the theory is all out there.
>>900416
I'm gonna try printing out a photo soon, but I think it'll lack contrast. Patterns seem to work well though.

thanks, man

i'd also like to see how text would work out. any chance you could take a of the transparency sheet before it's rolled up and then one after projection?
>>900667
>take a of the
take a pic of the
>>900636
I'll make a dickbutt in their name
>>900667
Sure, I'll make a pic soon
Made a photo projection, It came out pretty reasonable looking. I'm gonna need a bubble lens for the light though. I'm pretty sure that'd help focus the projection better.
>>900749
It's inside out, dude.
>>900749
Do a line art. Xmas theme. Put on EBay.
What light are you using? I wanna make a star projector that isn't shit
>>900966
second.
>>900667
bumping because i still want to see this
Pretty cool
poincare/10
This is a really nice project. Good job, OP, for doing something original.

Nice! You treat the light as basically a point source? Did you have to calibrate anything. Incorporate the diameter of the cylinder in the algorithm?
You want to take the pictures you get from your camera and run them through gimp, photoshop, or similar.
Then you save them with a logical filesize, never over 90% quality. And I mean NEVER. For anything higher quality you should NOT be using JPEG.
You should lower it until there is an unacceptable amount of loss of detail/noise.
This, for reference, is 75% quality in the gimp.
>>902444
a proper smartass would have turned the picture so that it is not upside down
>>902549
What are you talking about? It's not upside down.
>>902549
oooh what a feeeeeling
when were daaancing on the ceiling
>>902560
But it is
>>902560
That's upside down bruh. You can see the cord resting on the ground.
>>900391
I'm just curious. Are you left handed?
>>902560
So you're saying you have a tile ceiling and what appears to be a mini fridge glued onto the roof?
>>900391
can u tell me how to most easily get a crude but similar effect with a light? i already have bulbs protruding from my low ceiling, i figure making a transparent case that wont burn/melt/fumes could do the trick
>>902879
I'm glad that you got a 0/10.
>>902879
I never caught it.
>>902341
yup, a point light. The calibration is what makes it work - tweak the light position, cylinder radius or height and you'll get distortions.
>>902444
ty senpai
>>902602
nope, why?
>>902838
you can't really do it with bulbs - you need a single, sharp, omnidirectional light. Bulbs emit from filament or diffuse the output in other ways.
>>902966
care to post a guide on how to make? id be willing to donate a few bucks for your troubles
>>902966
>yup, a point light. The calibration is what makes it work - tweak the light position, cylinder radius or height and you'll get distortions.
That's what I figured. I also wondered if you could replace the cylinder with a cone. Pic related.
Since a cone is developable (zero Gaussian curvature) you can flatten it in the plane after a cut from base to apex. So you could still print a transparency and wrap it on the cone.
The advantage would be you wouldn't have to have it right on the ceiling or floor... there wouldn't be a white disk in the middle of the projection. In theory anyway.
>>903024
That's a really nice idea!
Cones are a bit trickier to assemble and use though, it'd require some sort of a base to stand up on or at least some visible supports, sort of reducing the effect.
I'm gonna adapt the algorithm at some point and test it out. If executed correctly, it could look really neat.
>>903330
>That's a really nice idea!
Thanks! Maybe a lampshade for a nightlight? It would be fun to project my daughters' choice of pics on the ceiling.
Best of luck to you.
