So I'm making a wooden roof rack for my car. Eventually it will be stained a nice dark color, but I ran into a problem. How the hell do I calculate the curve of my car, and cut the board so it fits flush?

Any help would be a great help.
>>
You'll have to create a full scale template. Cardboard should work. Will be a lot of cut and fit. Use template to mark board, keeping an eye on level.
>>

>Cardboard

Thats so stupid easy that I'm ashamed i didn't think of that. I'll get to work now.
>>
You're not even using pressure treated wood? Won't last a year.
>>
Aluminum conduit isnt much more money, is easier to work with, will last longer and will be strong enough for anything you want to put on top of a car
>>
>>899173

No you are correct, This is really more of "functional" template. I cant argue the price of 2 planks for 6 bucks while i mess around.
>>
Here's a crappy night shot of it.
The tape is what I may cut it to look like.

Wow OP. Cops are going to fuck you hard if they see that shit on your roof.

You could get away with it if you completely seal the wood in say fibreglass and epoxy. But then the wood will just be heavy and decorative.
>>
OP get some scribes. Level the board where you want it on your car and set the scribe up for your tallest point and trace it. Youll get a better fit than cardboard.

Looks good. I'd paint or stain and poly rather than use treated wood. Treated wood won't be treated to depth of board.

Retarded. Why would cops say anything?

This just happened up by me. Mattress falls off van. Tanker truck swerves. They never found the tanker driver, not even his teeth. They're trying to find a felony, but at a minimum matressboy will lose everything he has all the way down to the pennies and nickels in his couch cushions.

Put everyone's lives at risk on the road because you don't have the proper means to haul it or are too cheap to pay someone who does? Fuck you pal.

I honestly dont think it will be much of a problem up here in Michigan. And i have the proper bolts that a "real" set would use to attach it to the car. If it comes down to it though, no biggy.

Depends where in Michigan. Ann Arbor cops nag about stuff (primarily stance, so perhaps they aren't that bad.)
You'll be all right, but please make sure you attach that thing securely.
>>
>>899332
You'll need to prove both negligence and mens rea.

Latter is impossible, and chances are there'll be no evidence of the former that doesn't violate the fifth amendment.
>>
>>899332
Also what kind of retard swerves a fuel tanker to avoid a collision with a mattress?

Brake, never swerve. Courthouse is better than cemetary.
>>
>>899566
This. Same with animals on the highway, bitches can't accept you are going to kill fido and tear up your front end.
>>
>>899566
>Brake, never swerve..
- I'd agree entirely, but, old school.. you ever read a car manual for anything made in the last twenty years? Since the advent of ABS etc., punters are TOLD to brake AND swerve out of troubles way - all of which aint much help if your an oil tanker with (presumably) a concrete road barrier in your escape path.

Hope his mattress didn't get dirty or anything - he deserves locked up an all, morons wanting to test aerodynamic laws on their bedding should do so in private.
>>
>>899132
Bro that's not a bad idea and is totally feasible.

But....

You're gonna encounter some difficulties along the way.

It definitely would be waaay cheaper than one of those aftermarket racks but like somebody said: it won't last long in the weather.

But if you got it down pat then you could just make a new one every year lickity split.
>>
>>899365
Honestly you'll fit right in driving through taylor
>>
>>899132
cardboard + something to create a greater drawing distance from the car.. like a piece of styropor or something that doesn´t damage it will be much lesser cutting
>>
>>899544

Can't afford the repair bill desu
>>
>>899132
You could run some crafting wire over the roof and get the shape, then tape the wire to some cardboard to make a nice pattern you can mark your wood with.
>>
>>899332
Just tie better knots.
>>
>>899332

Well... I guess if you're too stupid to tie proper knots and secure loads, this could happen. But then, I'm not retarded. So fuck you right back.

Cardboard for a template.

Get a large compass (dividers, etc). Open to the largest gap between the straight cardboard edge and the roof. Holding the dividers opening vertically, run one point along the roof*. The other point will mark the roof's curve on tha cardboard.

*Put some tape on the roof first so as not to scratch it with the divider point.

yes because no one has ever been able to treat wood on their own.

Untreated wood can last many years aslong as its not in contact with the ground.
