I recently moved in to a house and the previous owner was a fairly heavy smoker.

Today I had the air ducts cleaned and sanitized, registers changed, and carpet professionally cleaned. I've heard good things about air purifiers.

Are there any proven ways besides repainting the walls and tearing out the carpet?

Thanks

from my experience air purifiers don't really get rid of the smell, although give it a shot, they can be expensive but even if it doesn't work you will just end up with cleaner air and feels good to breath

After bushfires, residents use ozone generators.Perhaps you can hire a professional unit from somewhere. I don't know how they work or even if they work, maybe google it

This, an air purifier only removes the smell that's reaching the air.

Ozone and repainting/carpeting is probably the best option.

Scrub the walls with soap and water. Then repaint those fuckers with a decent paint.

that crap can seep into the drywall itself

Professional fire remediation involves washing all the walls, sealing it with a shellac-based primer (smells will leach through latex base), and ozone generation.

If it can get the smell out of a kitchen fire, it can get the smell out from a few cigarettes.

Use the red label TSP in the paint section of the hardware store. It has to be the red label, the green label and the liquid dont contain phosphate which is the chelating agent that helps it break residues free.

Use it as directed on the box. After scrubbing a patch with tsp water, use a clean rag and clear water to rinse. Refresh the rinse water regularly.

Scrub every surface and nook and cranny as best you can. Go so far as to take dors off cabinets and hardware from bedroom doors and light fixtures to scrub clean in the sink.

I just cleaned out a property i own i had rented to a guy for three years. The filth from the light fixture in the living room alone was enough to turn the sinkwater a filthy brown.

After youve scrubbed everything once, you can do a second pass. Dont forget the ceilings. Windex the windows and frames until the paper towels come out just blue.

Rent a carpet cleaner and use a rug shampoo appropriate for it. Use Murphys oil on hardwood floors to clean it.

Finally once thats done, rent an industrial ozone generator.

Ozone (O3) is an oxidizer. And it does wonders for neutrilizing cigarette odor.

The problem is that end user generators and the like don't generate enough ozone to make a high enough concentration to get to the cause of the odor.

When using an industrial one you need to be careful as high concentrations of ozone can cause damage to your sense of smell.

Just start smoking. In a year or two you won't even notice it.

You bought a place or renting? Don't go doing the landlords job, find a new place to live.

Obscure porn reference?

i got an ozone generator from amazon for about 90 bucks. it had a 2 hour timer on it, but i opened it up and cut it out, spliced the ends together so it just runs as long as it's plugged in.

used it a few times in different locations while i was at work. it was the only thing - after trying probably half a dozen others - that really got the smoke/incense smell out. cleaning carpets helps too

No.
OTOH, painting ain't hard and carpet has a short life anyway.

Hotels use ozone generators.

See if you can rent a pro unit, ideally you want to leave it running for a few days, you also do not want to be in the same place while it is, basically turn it on then go away for the weekend then run in and open all the windows when you get back to let the ozone out.

BTW ozone generators is what the pro's use to get the smell of dead people out of places where rotting bodies have been found.

Concentrated ozone isn't good for you so I second the idea of getting out of the room.

TSP Anon is wise.
