Hi /diy/, i want to build a robotic arm, the thing is just that

How many degrees of freedom do you want?

If you want it to lift any significant amount or be accurate its going to be mad expensive
>>
>>1003740

What tasks do you want your robotic arm to do.

How far must it reach
How much must it lift
How much precision does it need
How fast must it move

These are all things that determine the design characteristics.
>>
First off you need to give up. Making a robotic arm like that is fucking impossible for an amateur like you. A crazy amount of work goes into making professional robot arms.

Ok now that is over with, you can make a shitty version of the above using hobby servos. Don't expect to lift much or have much precision.

>>
>>1003751
around 4 degrees of freedom, lift is not essential, but it would great to add
>>
>>1003775
That's a pretty tough set of requirements. You'd be hard pressed to achieve 2-3Hz and support that much load.
>>
>>1003753
Just want to lift some things, but not too heavy, around 15-20 grams of weight
>>
>>1003770
i know, just want to build it to begin to know how it works and the math behind it

can't get any easier than this. all you need is:
>some 3d printed parts (if you don't have printer, use local hackerspace or even library)
>nuts and bolts
>some servos
>servo controller

>>
>>1003778
>lift is not essential
Problem with an arm is that it needs to be able to lift itself, at a minimum. The most basic concept you need to understand is: torque.
>>
>>1003783
Yeah, really want to know as well.

I can images his skeleton will be found in a decade or so with this robotic arm still thrusting a dildo in and out of his pelvis
>>
>>1003783
He read the /diy/ bingo and decided to not post anymore.
>>
>>1003782
Build a 3d printer first. They are essentially robotic arms. They can also build the parts you'll need for a robotic arm. They use stepper motors, which can be used to build a robotic arm. They use arduino based controls like robotic arms. Are you starting to get it?

There's tons of kits online if you want to skip the printer part. I bought a budget tier printer for like 300 shipped and it is pretty fucking cool. Definitely taught me alot about stepper control.

He popped up in some random thread like 6 months later. Anon were asking and he said something like, "I've been here since then, but I'm not going to keep starting threads about it for attention." He posted some of of the wip, and that was the last thing related I saw

Problem with more actuators is more length.
The longer it is, the more sway there is towards the effector.

Design & build one from scratch or you're not building shit, you're just putting a kit together or following instructions.
>>
>>1005247

What are all the little holes for?
>>
>>1005266
holes on the sides of the servos are to just secure the servos. other holes in the middle of the supports are for zip ties/spacers/screws+bolts to secure the parallels

Here OP: this might give you some inspiriation. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=E2evC2xTNWg

I think you should consider using hydraulics instead of servos if you want to stay cheap.

if you're just making one thing--or a few of a thing--milling down a solid block is faster and cheaper

If you want to get started with basics, I imagine getting this little robot arm kit would be a good start
>Build said kit, using it to try and develop an understanding of how robotic arms in general work
>Next step: rewire said arm into an Arduino/Pi/whatever and control it with said board
>Upscale that shit nigga
Gotta learn to walk before running and whatnot

You ain't seen nothing yet. You need lightweight sometimes, this is why muh rabid prototyping is pretty exciting. Cuz then we can make stuff lile that without milling down a bunch of stuff

>>1005898
>I think you should consider using hydraulics instead of servos if you want to stay cheap.
Hahhahhahaha, no. Hydraulics are pretty expensive. Servos you can buy cheap from china.

Although I would like to point out that you can build/buy hobby scale hydraulics. I really want to see someone diy hydraulic robot, even though it is a bad idea.

>>1006026

Oh god those arms are shitty. They don't have any position sensing and it is hard to add it to them.
>>
>>1006150
>Oh god those arms are shitty.
Yes, yes they are. A decent learning experience though, at least on the mechanical side of things
>>
>>1006194
honestly, the only useful thing learnable from these toys are practice driving robots and learning the joint functions

otherwise, these robots are nothing like a real one, mechanically
and not scale-able because the size/weight of a material has a exponential growth curve

at any rate, op you will not make an aticulated 6 axis robot that will be able to lift the required payload (no matter how small) at the speed in which you would like
omg hrydraulic arm is this 1960

you can buy real robots for cheap enough now a days stop being babies
>>
>>1006318
Nigga I don't even think we had robots in the 1960s.

>>exponential
CUBIC, the scaling is CUBIC
