Where can I get steel plate for general cut/weld diy stuff. Thinking of 3/16" hot roll plate 4' x 8' for starters, maybe 11gauge cold roll would be cheaper though. My company buys from Samuel in Houston once every few months for various projects, so I could probably place a small order and pay with my CC, but I don't want to call and be a "whats the cheapest option you have available right now" douche...

Oh yeah, my project right now is an above ground fire pit for camping.

You'll have to call and price it out. 3/16" is hefty for a fire pit.
>>
I order my steel using email for quotes and only call them to pay for the order via cc. Email seems to be the best way for us small fries because we're not on the phone with a sales rep for half an hour for a sub $1000 order.

yeah,

maybe cut an old compressor tank in half would work too

What? Most local suppliers will sell to individuals. You don't need to waste time with this. Call and ask, 'hello, do you sell 3/16ths plate steel, around 2 by 5 feet? What do they cost?'

As someone who sells parts that most people think they have to buy a lot of, or that they're not allowed to buy, I can do firm that email is the worst, most annoying way unless it's a straight up email order.

THIS. Fucking call in your orders. Also note that sheet is typically sold 4x8 so get that and cut it yourself unless you specifically need something sheared to length, like the 2" strips I needed to join my shipping container roofs.

A 6" (not smaller or larger) grinder with cutting discs is your friend. Get a good one, you'll use the fuck out of it. They run the small wheels and discs just fine.

Yeah, gonna buy the material tomorrow. We have a plasma cutter at work that I have been familiar with for a few years.

Wooh. $200 later. 4x8x11ga hot roll, 4x8 of expanded, 120ft 1/4" rod, and 16ft angle. Started cutting the sheet down, was more time consuming than I expected!

Rewhoops.

Fuck it, I hope all my pics are upside down from now on. Well, progress will be slow; Millermatic 211 is dead due to wiring mishap. Parts will be in mid next week. Will keep plasma cutting and post another pic monday or tuesday.
