Thread activity because why the heck not:
>In the hypothetical fighting game, what would be the alternate costumes for your character
>remember, they all need to look distinct enough from each other and the default costume that players won't get confused if they pick the same character and do a lot of crossing up
>but at the same time, it has to be obvious that it's the same character so that people who haven't unlocked the costume yet will still know which moves to expect
>and don't add anything that will obscure the character's moves too much in profile so the other player can't react as well
>And there's no budget for changing animations so you can't add anything that would make the character clip through themselves with their usual moveset, or that requires more rigging than a soft body modifier.

IT WON'T DIE

Not only does "creators" can, and will do that on occasion, but if they haven't reached a consensus or need more time for whatever reason, why not delay it a bit ? It sucks for people who applied, but maybe it's necessary.
Unless you're talking about delaying a submission to HW.

>It's not like we, as creators, could say, "Oh, well, I was gonna have that page to you today but... I'm gonna take the weekend to polish it some more."

But webcomic authors who do so damage their reputations in the process - just look at any Paranatural thread. If you're a company (especially if you're a company that functions on deadlines) and you say you're going to do something by a certain date, you better or else you erode your legitimacy. Do or do not, you know?

I'm being ridiculous though. I don't even want to accept the contract, I just want to be offered one. I realized a couple weeks ago that HW wouldn't be a good fit for me.

Zack damaged his reputation here. He is still a fairly popular webcomic author (for what it's worth), his patreon is doing fine and he picked up the pace. He still has missed updates but it's not as frequent as it was before. Also I think he bashed 4chan at some point, but missing deadlines didn't hurt him that much overall.
Sure you'll get a bad rap if do so and it can stick, but it's nothing too bad if you have enough fans.
Though if you start missing deadlines and give no reasonable explanations or show contempt for your fans when they ask why you'll probably get dumped by most people reading your comic.

Most of what's really wrong here are drawing issues. The faces are terribly constructed, the breasts look odd as fuck and change size, and the arms are doing all kinds of wonky shit in the bottom pic for starters.

Otherwise, it's just an incredibly generic and inconsistently proportioned short haired woman who doesn't seem to know how to dress herself properly. Beyond that last bit, I get no sense of who she is from how she's drawn.

Found my old Google Drive files, All of my old notes for the stories. Found some stuff I had actually forgotten. I wrote a lot of this when i was but a wee Weeb, and have consolidated that to the first chapters so that as I continue this project, I'll be shedding myself of the obvious anime tropes and influences.
>>
>>84521692
I learned that the I before E rule has more exceptions than applications
>>
>>84521756
still, you can say "if a word is likely to have been covered by that rule".. you can usually imagine by "did oldtimey people use that word?"
>>
>>84521756

I dunno. I've never really had a problem remembering the differences.

I never really had any problem remember the differences between "to" "two" and "too", and "their" "there" and "they're" etc.

But I guess we all have our little quirks, because I have to stop once in a while to remember which way is right and left.
>>
>>84521855
working on your enunciation often helps with pronunciation too. nobody should be pronouncing they're like there/their.. affect and effect shouldn't sound alike, nor than and then, are and our, accept and except, you're and your.. these have totally different vowel sounds
I mean i had sloppy speech as a little kid (almost never pronounced T as anything but D), but as soon as i was in school i started paying more attention.

Same, but I think the difference here is while I may draw the thumbs on the wrong sides of the hands and have to catch myself all dewd has to do is write a script into anything instead of directly into photoshop or whatever he is using. Almost every word processor or browser has a spell check It caught two typos for me here.
>>
>>84522029
from what I've gathered, he has such a program, and uses it most of the time. And then once in a while "oh I didn't have it, I was at a different computer"
Most of the rest of the mistakes are things a word processor wouldn't catch, like there and their
So since we got 'their' I assume no spellchecker was used this time.
>>

Good point. We're here to discuss webcomics.
I hope every other comic that posts gets 70 posts surrounding it. That would unironically be pretty fantastic.
>>
>>84522528
The main reason most comics don't get any comments anymore is because no one wants to put in effort for advice/suggestions when they end up the bad guys, OR if they end up having to tiresomely argue w/ lazy egotistical idiots.

Dewd and his apologists are literal cancer in these threads, as they're the ones promoting this general atmosphere. Note that the times when his dicksuckers aren't there, his comic fades quietly into the background.
>>

bullshit of the highest degree. I don't even know where to begin.
A. if "no one wants to" be-the-people-shitting-on-dewd, then they should stop. instead, they continue and even increase it
B. there is no reason anyone with plural brain cells should expect the same thing to happen when they comment on other people's work.
C. the 'dicksucking' is always and only in response to the false form of shitting-on. when the shitting-on is accurate, people agree with it and maybe steer it in a more constructive direction, or help explain to that confused person why it is the way it is.

I have an idea for a villain movement in my comic of genocidal Christian fundamentalists, like a second Crusades movement going around the world to cleanse the world of the "heathens" and "abominations" (non-humans)

Basically Christfag Al Qaeda/ Islamic State.

Any tips or ideas for making or fleshing out a movement like this?

>tips fedora
I AM THE LORD OF THE FEDORA!!!! THE GRAND GENTLEMAN! THE MASTER OF M'LADY! THE SULTAN OF SOCKS WITH SANDALS! THE ARCHBISHOP OF ATHEIST ENLIGHTENMENT!

I really like my style, but recently I've been thinking if it's too ''sexy'' for an occult detective drama. My comic's trying to be sorta ''realistic'', dark, gritty and down to earth, but I'm afraid that no one can take it seriously, if my characters look too gay or something. Sure, there are gay happenings in it, but I don't want it to be the first thing that comes up in people's minds when they see the art.

>Alt history
>Christianity never became a major religion

Christianity itself would have evolved pretty fucking differently if there weren't state powers directing its growth. To start with, you're probably going to have to look at the various heresies, the process by which canon was decided and what got left by the wayside, what the major schisms were. Then think about who has directed its growth, what narratives do and don't serve them, where sects might split and so on.

You're also going to have to get a clear idea of where the religions of Europe grew and how. Are these pagans? Or did new faiths grow out of the late Roman mystery cults, similarly to Christianity?

Is Christianity some persecuted underground shit? Some almost-okay Jews-in-the-middle-ages shit?

You've got a lot of world building and research to do if you want to get this thing ticking.
>>
>>84523856
I wouldn't say it's too sexy, it's just not 'solid' enough to have that gritty occult detective thing you're probably aiming for. Which is ironic because you're using a brush with a diamond-shaped tip for some reason. But your strokes are super smooth and curvy, kinda lumpy and uneven in places. Like a fancy newspaper cartoon, not at all like the classic detectivey feel. I suggest you study some comics that have the feel you want and look at the way they use hard edges and shadows.

Then why are they like that? How is a non-major religion going to start up a vicious crusade to wipe out the heathens? I don't mean that in a critical way, but literally how and why. Will your comic explain those? because the reader's going to be asking.

I don't want to give too much away, but I should mention that this is a world where all mythology and folklore is canon to world history (don't ask me about creation, still tinkering), so all gods are real and exist alongside mankind, taking part in politics, war, culture and other things.

>>84524086

Christianity isn't the biggest religion, but due to many conflicts throughout history, it has managed to have enough followers around the world, in the millions. I haven't figured everything out yet, but after research and planning, it can be explained.

>>84524013

>You're also going to have to get a clear idea of where the religions of Europe grew and how.

The major religions that control Europe are Hellinism, Norse, and Egyptian pagan (though located in Africa, its substantial influence in trade and commerce, along with heavy nepotism from a close relationship with the Olympic Pantheon, Egypt is considered a "European" power out of sheer nepotism)

>Is Christianity some persecuted underground shit? Some almost-okay Jews-in-the-middle-ages shit?

For the first thousand or so years after the Crucifixion, yes, it's persecuted with varying results. Christians in Europe are basically Jews and Gypsies, not always hunted but mainly looked down upon and bullied around by pagan worshippers.Their few communities are scattered across the parts of Europe that aren't controlled by the Roman Empire and and Scandinavian Federation (which still exist throughout time.)

Most Christians are good people who want to show kindness to their fellow man and want to worship a god who won't likely date-rape their daughter or give them donkey-ears just for not liking their music. Most of them have villages and abbeys where they practice in seclusion, those living in large cities practice in secret avoiding the attention of pagan gods. Some of the Celtic and Slavic gods tolerate them as long as they don't try to convert their people, out of mutual hate for the Olmpian assholes.
>>
>>84525454
No it's not the biggest religion but it's big enough for that to have been a valid occurrence. big enough in a developed-enough part of the world. islam is big enough too. but as long as you're thinking about it, do what you want. i'm not going to enjoy this comic no matter what, but i'm relieved this isn't just another troll pasta.
>>
>>84525454
So basically in this version, Christianity wasn't essentially co-opted and rebooted by the Romans, and was left to its true original roots. So.. without the Roman influence, why are they suddenly going on a kill-the-infidels crusade? Because without a vatican, I just don't see that. They have to have, at some point, developed a big overarching organized hierarchy, or they wouldn't be able to act so politically.

Anons...

I'm having so much fun with my shity fancomic that I feel guilty for being so awfully slow at working. And, well, so amateurish. But damn, it's so fun I sometimes find myself drawing or painting very late in the night.

Question: the second to last panel (red) is a scene that doesn't belong to the sequence. I want to make it stand out. Any suggestions?
>>
>>84528327
hey man if you're having fun, that's awesome. own it.
so far, not-being-colored makes it stand out, but what exactly do you want it to feel like? a flashback? imagination? obviously there's traditional cliches like flashbacks being sepia or grayscale, imagination being wreathed in clouds.. but you can represent those without being totally literal
>>
>>84528355
Well, all of them are flashbacks, in a way: they're memories in the dream of a character, but not the red one, which is the memory of another character that gets mixed in.
>>
>>84528498
okay then, what you wanna go with for sure is a very different shading styloe. i'd say either full gradient paintingy stuff, or hard chiaroscuro with no highlights
>>
>>84528547
There's an explosion in the chain of not belonging scenes, so I think I'll go with the full gradient think. Besides, it fits, because that character's story will be made with pencils and watercolors in actual paper (because it's all original content outside licensed stuff).

Rate my background characters. Have in mind that these are literally all first drafts
They all work at a bar (the shades and the vest thing are uniform), and they will all probably only show up for one or two panels unless I love the designs enough
I'm the same guy who posted the skeleton character in the last thread, incase the style seemed familiar
>>
>>84532126
The bird works. The others, not so much.
Try using finer lines for everything except the outlines. You did it with the girl's mouth, but try doing the same thing for places where the character overlaps itself. The shapes will read much better.

Try making the shades smaller, too. Right now they're so big they don't even read as eyeglasses.

While most Christians are *known* to live in the United States and Europe, their people do in fact have a major country with a capital, an organized military, a leader and a plan to take the world that has been denied to them for centuries. I'd tell you more, but then I'd be giving things away.

>You can't say most are peaceful when they go on a crusade.

You're right. I should have reworded that.
At some point in history, people the more organized nation starts a rebellion that develops into these Crusaders. While the majority of outcast Christians are decent, there definitely are many who believe that their religion and culture is superior to others and desire to crush everyone else.

Also, not biting off more than I can chew, but this story will be told in different time periods, starting with a main storyline, and, later, I'd go into other eras, from paleolithic times to the space age.

I don't think height matters as much as people think with an antagonist. It's all about his presence. Pyramid head for example wasn't any taller than silent hill's protagonist without the helmet and was kind of fat as well. But with how he is presented you don't even notice because he doesn't need that to be intimidating. Try out some things you wouldn't consider otherwise, it might make for a more interesting character. The one you're showing right now is very generic.

More experiments with time efficient art styling for "Vegabonds" which is a sci-fi comedy I've been working on. I think this is my best one yet. Input as always is greatly appreciated.

Hyla is a duplicitous and secretive Martian gunslinger. Tobie Jr is a malfunctioning Children’s medical droid. CIN is an honor-bound stealth cyborg from earth. Trype is an ex-supermodel, villified from her home planet due to her pursuit for technology. All of them have left their home-worlds for different reasons and are now lost in space, the only thing that unites them is that they are all now vegabonds.

I love how over the top your comic is and you have some interesting character designs, but somehow the comic doesn't really read very well. Partially that's because of what >>84535170 said about the speech bubbles, and partially because between the pastel palette and lineless style I sometimes don't know what's going on in a panel at first glance. I can usually figure it out fairly quickly, but the moment it takes me to do that takes me out of the story, so as a result the reading experience feels choppy.

I like your design and style a lot, but I'm not so fond of the color choices. It might help to give every main character an additional color of their own to help them stand out against background characters, or to experiment with different shades of blue and red to create more variety while still sticking with your overall color scheme.

Hyla's knees don't make much sense in profile, and it's odd having all the fingers extend so low onto the palm, especially when the upper line of the thumb doesn't extend into the palm. I can see that making it hard to distinguish the thumb from the rest of the hand. With those thick lines you're also probably better off going the four fingers route rather than having razor thin lines on glued-together fingers, and inconsistent finger numbers.

Also you've got to look pretty closely at Cin to tell what's going on with the fingers and legs. Either move them apart a little so they read as distinct objects or at least maybe lighten the hands so they pop into the foreground more. There are probably other solutions you could try. Point is keep fucking around with it cause it's vague as is.

Red pops out of your blacks and dark grays way better than most of your blues do value-wise. This gets weird on anybody with two-colored eyes.

Trype's high saturation throughout makes him feel a little out of place with the others.

Also, there are a lot of colors that will read as gray. You don't always have to have precisely zero saturation. If you haven't tried giving your grays slight hues, you should check it out and see how it works. A green-gray might help the reds and blues pop a little better (G is equidistant from R and B, but farther from either than purple is).

>Hyla's a sneaky gunslinger
Gun's not prominent. Clunky boots and baggy stuff don't read as sneaky.
>Tobie's a children's medical droid
He's kid height so that's cool, but not much about him says medical. Claw hands make it seem like he'd be bad at his job before breaking. Maybe that's the joke, like with Zoidberg. Not getting much malfunction beyond a crooked antenna.
>CIN is a stealth cyborg
You got some wiggle room with tech stealth, because maybe he cloaks. But he's tall and busy in ways that make it hard to imagine what he looks like actually sneaking anywhere.

>Trype is an ex-supermodel
I like the joke
>vilified for pursuit of technology
Vague as hell. Is this plastic surgery? A fetish? Why are they a cyborg and why do their people care?

Beyond the ugly supermodel gag, will this character carry themselves like a supermodel? Like what is the look supposed to communicate?

Oh, and a final note that I didn't notice until late:
The two peaks at the top of CIN's design are going to be weird to draw in many poses. Just think about looking at this guy from the front. Maybe play with these features, maybe pick one peak to be bigger and more important than the other.

thanks for your feedback! the pastel palette is a thing i enjoy, but i do realize that it could lend to some clarity issues so i'll try to up the contrast between the characters and the background.

Oh hey, plot.

You could also try working more with hue shifts instead of just contrast to show distance , that's something a lot of artists do whose coloring mainly consits of pale watercolor washes.
You might have to look up some information about how color and light work to get that right though, because I don't think I can do a good job explaining that properly in a post.

I really enjoy the wobbly street lanterns in the last panel, as well as the color scheme. I need to get around to reading your archives.

Nah, it's called Vegabonds because none of these characters align with either of the two universal factions. One of which (blue) believes the end goal of all species is immortality through machines. The other end (red) believes the only way to exist fully is through the cycle of nature. Vegabonds work with both factions as peacekeepers so neither of them becomes disproportionately powerful and conquers the other side. They're peacekeepers. This is a play on the two party systems in near every sci-fi in existence and how often they use red and blue as identifying colors (Star Wars, the Matrix, Tron, Lain, etc) yet you never see any kind of third party that serves as a mediator.

>>84535674
Yeah i was worried about Hyla's use of green. I think you're right about giving each one a subtle color along with their team colors. Does this look any better?

>>84536058
Well all of those descriptions are vague. All of them have very intricate backstories. Trype is part of a species called Trog-Blatterans that quickly devolve with every generation and since they're part of the red faction mentioned above they believe this is progress and what nature intended and shun technology. Trype was considered the most beautiful because of her complete lack of functioning eyes and skeletal structure. To combat this she developed technology in secret with other renegade technicians to help combat these issues. She invented the "spine bag" which keeps her upright like a skeleton would and has many other implants peppering her body to the point where she used a popular blood replacer that doubles as a machinery coolant (hence the blue skin) since she essentially destroyed the things that made her attractive and committed heresy against their beliefs she was purged.

Interesting point with CIN's peaks. I'll make the one on his robe shorter from now on, thanks.

Woah, i appreciate all the feedback. It's a lot to take in. I'll definitely be using less grays, I didn't realize how bad it looked. I'll definitly have to work with hands more as well.

>Hyla
She is not sneaky, she's secretive from her own teammates. She tries to play it off as if she has a tragic and mysterious backstory when in reality she left mars to get away from her numerous embarrassing family members. I didn't include props in this image because every other picture I've done with her has been with her guns.

>Tobie
He has a tray that folds out from under his arms with surgical tools on it. He was never meant for actual procedures, he was essentially a mascot used as an elaborate end table. It'll be shown in dialogue how corrupt he is, it happens gradually and his inability to perform medical tasks is a plot point.

>CIN
90% of the time he'll be covered up like in this picture, and whenever his arms are in view his cloak will drape back like a poncho. I chose a terrible pose for his arms in that pic. I'll avoid it in the future.

Thanks again for the feedback, it helps a lot. This image has some of the stuff I was referring to.

>Thanks again for the feedback, it helps a lot.
No problem. I know how important it is to nail some of these details in advance, and kind of wish I knew better how to handle this stuff when I started.

>Responses.
In a general sense, I think it's important to telegraph the pertinent details either by aesthetics or features. I might have missed the point of some of the characters from brief descriptions, but it's still a good thing to keep in the back of your mind. Robot does read better as a mascot than a surgeon, though.

Oh, and another thing I forgot to mention was to look into gamut masking as a way to generate and rationalize limited color palettes. You might or might not end up capping the saturation on your purples a smidge lower. Not like reads-as-gray low, but just a little lower than what you've got on the left here.

Anyway, good luck with your project. I'm looking forward to seeing how this stuff turns out.

What do you think about these figurines?

I know enough to draw single characters pretty well, but as soon I try more one interacting with perspective and shit, my brain melts down.
For me, buying one to pose seems useless and wasteful, but having two or more feels like it would help me so much, especially knocking out poses so I don't have to spend hours just sketching out figures in space.
And 3D features in manga studio was infuriatingly clumsy and slow, I imagine myself playing with these guys to get the poses I wants effortlessly.

They're also like 40~70 bucks, but its Japanese nerdtoys for collectors and such.
I don't know, thoughts?

What are the pros of having your comic in hiveworks? I saw the catalogue and at least art wise every comic looks either generic or like shit

>>84537821
ELITE TOP GUN ONLY THE BEST
>>
>>84537775
I tried that and ended up coming back to studying photos, but it's always useful to have a tridimentional object. Lets face it, the doll wont have the real movements a human body will but I think its useful for proportions and such
>>
>>84537872
It's sad that you're making fun of wanting to make the best art for your audience
>>
>>84537821
They assist with the advertising and web design so you can focus on the comics-making part of things.
I haven't heard anything about how it is to work with them, though.

>>84537821
Filtered aggregators present acceptable quality content so that the reader doesn't have to wade through hundreds half-made never updating garbage that is the webcomic scene.

Recently got back into drawing with the intent of doing something productive.

Been reading through Jack Hamm's cartooning book and doodling when I can (I get a lot of time to do it while at my desk at work), and I'm having a lot of fun and seeing some progress, but I'm wondering if any of you guys know of some kind of book/site/youtube channel with lessons or exercises that should help my general hand-eye coordination when it comes to drawing - drawing smoother lines, rounder circles, better spacial awareness (eg. being able to draw two eyes the same-ish size the first time without having to measure or keep redrawing), is there anything like that?
>>
>>84537775
drawing two people entwined is my kryptonite too. unfortunately yeah as >>84537878 said, it's only going to help with proportion because the interactions between soft flesh require.. soft flesh. that, and no doll has ever replicated the complexity of the human hips and shoulders.

>>84537443

>generic
good is inevitably going to be generic as more people copy it, and I bet the ones that look like shit, do so because they were trying not to be generic.
>>
>>84538107
Peter Han has a few good exercises in the preview demo. I don't know about the paid thing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk

Aside from that, /ic/ recommends Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, which has a lot of exercises that sharpen your eye to proportions.

Try asking in the /ic/ beginners' thread.
>>
>>84537775
I have never owned these specific ones, but one problem I ran into with similar figures/dolls is that it's really hard to pose them like the ones in your foto, even with a doll stand. They fall over, or a joint is floppy and the arm bends down because gravity, stuff like that.

If you give these here a try and they turn out to be good, let us know, though!
>>
>>84537821
>>84538195
>generic
There is only a limited way to represent attractive humans in a comic.
Actual audience don't care about unique snowflake designs, and despite what John K tells you making the ugliest shit possible doesn't make your work better or more fun to read.

Most of the comics there are there becasue they are long running and the creators were able to keep and grow an audience.
>>
>>84538140
Seconding, with the addition that even for single-figure poses, models won't tell you when and where joints lock or how weight is distributed or how fat is deformed by gravity or how muscles are deformed by their use. If you want to really git gud, there is no substitute for directed study and observation of the real thing.
>>
>>84538195
There's plenty of shit that's good and doesn't get copied. In webcomics in particular, the odds of people knowing your thing exists in order to copy it are pretty low anyway. A Lesson is Learned But the Damage is Irreversible has still only been copied by that one hack Aaron Diaz. Hardly makes the former generic.
