Only shit Bastion players stay in one place. The advantage of Bastion over Torbjorn is that it has almost no set-up time in comparison to the autoturret. Honestly, I think it doesn't work as well for Overwatch as it does for TF2. TF2's story (at least until the Mann v Machine stuff) is literally "These two morons hire a team of mercenaries to blow each other up over entirely worthless pits of gravel because they are morons and the industry behind everything just want a perpetual war." It was a joke and purposely made all the conflict meaningless with characters who are likable but are morally reprehensible so we don't feel bad seeing them get blown up.

id say the characters are barebones just so the audience can fill in with whatever they want and make the game their own, is a different way of making characters. it wouldnt work in a comic or a book or a movie but i think is great for a game.
characters like freeman, chell, frisk nd other silent types barely have a personality but that lets the player write its own story when playing them. now we can have a mercy who is a compassionate mother, a salty bitch, a stressed helper, etc.
if we tried and put a strongly defined personality players would feel constrictied in what they can do with the character.

I never claimed that Bastion was strong in high ranked play, just that only shit Bastions stay in one place, and he's good without support if you know the maps well. Knowing the maps is good for every character but it's especially essential for Bastion, Torbjorn and Symmetra. I like Bastion; he's a Transformer, has a little bird friend and makes cute noises. So I've made a point of getting good with him and learning the maps to facilitate that. I've developed a good sense of what I can get away with and what I can't, and when to bail on a turret spot or just straight-up switch out of him. He's helluva situational and has a lot of counters. I'd be an idiot to think otherwise.

Not really. It plays very differently. Teams and maps are a lot smaller, you move slower, and there's static team sizes, it's not like in TF2 where you can join whenever in the match and teams get rebalanced and everyone just sort of does their own thing. Everything plays much more slow, focused, and methodical, with a much bigger teamwork emphasis.

Because they should either make developed characters or makes them ciphers, trying to do both is just boring. Why should Blizzard be praised for having fans do their work for them? The difference with TF2 is that, as I said before, all the characters are brimming with personality. Everything from the silhouettes, body types, and voices despite all of them just being "normal" guys. The greatness of the TF2 mercs is that they don't even really need a backstory to be great characters. Overwatch on the other hand just feels like Blizzard just grabbed a bunch of different archetypes from various genres and then slapped on some bare bones personality.
