Humphries didn’t get Star-Lord, made the Peter/Kitty shit that even Bendis disliked, he added some unecessary SJW shit, made Peter into an incompetent cheap version of Pratt Star-Lord (and going by the shitty GotG cartoon, which BTW Gunn disowned, no one at Marvel Entertainment can write a decent Star-Lord or the GotG).
Humphries is a mediocre writer but he produces some good shit when he's inspired and I guess for this GL title he is inspired.

Remember when the Green Lantern Ring was the most powerful weapon in the universe? Now any random asshole with a club can easily overpower a wielder of the ring. I agree some of the dialogue is cringe but Simon maniacally driving into a store with a giant green car construct to rescue Jessica is the kind of fun I like to see in my comics. The meet the family dinner in the solicits sounds great too. This comic has the kind of premise that is still entertaining even when the writing is shitty.

The problem isn't the variants themselves. The problem is the hoops Marvel makes LCS jump through to get them. Not to mention it artificially inflates their sales numbers and leaves stores stuck with tonnes of unsold (usually nonreturnable) stock.
DC with Rebirth have (I think) only had 1 variant per title, all freely orderable, non-incentive based and fully returnable.
