That's just an imaginary friend, isn't it? That's what children do when they're still learning how to socialize and empathize with other people. It's a healthy part of child development, but even little kids know it's not real it's a game. There was a whitepaper on this recently, I got to hear some of the interviews. Well yeah, but it's somewhat similar and has parallels with the whole, they work just fine as best bros thing. John and Dave are more positive in their interactions and for humans positivity in romantic partners is rather important for sustainable relationships. Then you add in the big fact that John's only into girls and yeah it only really works when Dave's a girl.
Dave and Karkat work perfectly fine as bros with a slight rivalry or antagonism in their interactions, but both clearly caring deeply about each other, similar to Dave and John in that latter regard. The difference being John has shown Dave already how capable he is, so he doesn't have to be as worried about the guy, Karkat on the other hand is still weenie central. The problem is they both have such massive personal issues that their verbal bouts could quickly turn sour, the same thing would likely happen if one of them was female as well just to move past that whole stigma.

I'd say Tavros is much less intelligent that Calliope, but they are strikingly similar. I heard a fitting description of Tavros's shortcomings from someone who was writing a story with him in and commenting on how to write the guy. They stated that Tavros is easy to write for as you just have him respond with the worst possible thing someone could say in a specific situation, then add some um's and uh's in that. Calliope at least attempts to be helpful, if a bit vague.

Tavros is certainly not as educated as Calliope, and he definitely says some really stupid crap every now and then. But he's got some noticeable emotional/social intelligence and a strong sense of right and wrong that he does actually act on.
To reduce him to "just write the worst possible response" doesn't do the character justice. No wonder he's always written like shit in fics.

Oh no I didn't intend to reduce him to just that, was merely an add on that sprung to mind given the subject matter. One of the key things with Tavros throughout the story is that he tries to do things he feels is right, he just falters when people confront him and his process, similar to Jake really. I was sad we didn't get more time between the two to help round out the scraps of what Jake's arc ended up as.
Tavros has always had that ability to get people behind him, even his primary antagonist in the form of Vriska wanted to hang out and interact with the guy. Again there's similarities with John in that regard, another character who could have been interesting to see interact with him, or Dave too for that faux confidence into actual confidence story sub plot. Either way, yes he's not just a less intelligent Calliope, but damn if they aren't similar in many ways. The big thing both need is self-confidence and direction so there's easy parallels there as well.
As for being written like shit, I cant say I disagree. He's a slow burner, needs time to sort things out through his own methods. We saw glimpses of that when he first confronts Vriska on the meteor and that's really what writers should have focused on for the guy.
