On my many travels, from Shanghai to Orinduik, I've been asked when and where Neps originated from. And to put it simply, there's no consensus in the scientific community to answer that question. The Condesce; I'd have her delay taking action in some manner to extend the time before Game Over when it was still possible to engineer events to have the characters interact, develop and progress their personal and plot relevant stories. Perhaps having her delay Aranea's plan too, they could have their own little thing with the trolls, like a side story development for one of the end end game villains in the form of both LE's servant and the Troll's big bad from back home.
I would also allow time for the actual main villain in the form of Bec Noir to be confronted and dealt with by, at the very least, the Beta kids. Dave would need someone who challenged his insecurities whilst still reassuring him that it's okay to feel that way. There's a number of character who could do that from either angle, that being challenging the negatives or supporting the positive emotions, likely both where necessary.
Either way, John and Dave work best as best friends, their interactions are just that and John would act as a positive influence on the guy. It's hard to feel conflicted or vulnerable if you're having fun with a goof ball like John.
