Now that I'm not sick as a dog, let's try some Power Man and Iron Fist!
Remember way back when Luke got his ass kicked by a car? Here's Luke fighting a fucking TRUCK and winning.
>"Thus it goes for an hour."
Man, Danny's lucky that he's rich.
I like to bring up this bit as a difference in how the two men look at money. Luke was willing to kick in the door to the First Family of Marvel, steal one of their aircrafts, invade a soverign nation, and beat the shit out of the biggest supervillain Marvel has for the kind of money that Danny will lose without thinking about it.
As I said back during Luke's series, the man is a lot more intelligent than how gaudy costume, blacksploitation roots, and "SWEET CHRISTMAS!" catch phrase will imply, as this page shows.
Ah yes, Ward Meachum, the comically inept and evil nemesis to Danny, who he may or may not even remember or know about.
Man, remember when beepers were a thing?
>"No, you can't!"
>"He can!"
Man, I kind of miss catty narration.
>that jealous iron fist in the fourth panel
>"What do I care if you guys are going into buisness together, I can still have Kung Fu adventures with the Sons of the T... oh..."
As I said a while ago, "Hero for Hire" basically means they'll do whatever you pay them for, even something as mundane as this.
I guess the flying bathtub isn't good enough for these shows.
>>83971739
Maybe his body is still getting denser.
>"I'll stop the tiger with my bare hands, and I'll worry about my secret identity later."
You never see most other characters with secret identities try this. Most of them either pull a Superman and clumsily take care of it, or pull a Spidey and run like a bitch to change. Not Danny "Fuck Secret Identities" Rand.
>>83971754
Ed Hannigan- More knowledgeable about racist terms than Gruenwald, I guess.
>>83972268
Funny you should mention that. It's not true in Luke's case, but remember that theory.
>>83972325
What, you mean "buck"? That's a racist term?
>>83971980
Now that is how you rock a cape majestically when you can't fly.
>>83972435
Yup. When they made USAgent's black friend into Steve's new Bucky near the end of the The Captain story, they got letters over it, and turned him into Battlestar.
Gruenwald was just as in the dark as you.
>>83972524
Is that a common phrase? Or one that isn't used much in 2016?
>>83971739
He's gained enough XP to level up by now.
>>83972552
I think it was more common back in a casually open racist days.
And possibly regionally locked to the US South.
>>83972435
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Buck
In post-Reconstruction United States, Black Buck was a racial slur used to describe a certain type of African American men. In particular, the caricature was used to describe black men who absolutely refused to bend to the law of white authority and were irredeemably violent, rude, and lecherous.
>>83972618
>And possibly regionally locked to the US South.
That'd explain why I didn't know it, given I'm in New England.
>>83972317
I am moderately disappointed Danny didn't Kung Fu Magic the tiger calm.
But that's counter balanced by the guy thinking he might be Lord Plunder, and the animal trainer dressed like a doorman.
>>83972653
>a good portion of the article ends up being a plot summary of D.W. Grifftith's "Birth of a Nation"
Gee, no wonder the guy hasn't come up in a while. I don't know why they don't use him now, just retcon his real name to be Drew or something.
>>83972743
If you're referring to using chi to do that, back in these days he had to be conservative with the Iron Fist. He can't do entire fights with it on until... shit, pretty far into the 00's.
Luke, how are YOU staying in there? I don't see you wearing a seatbelt.
>>83972777
His first name is Dave, you could call him that. Or maybe just Griff or something.
>"The latest and greatest team of them all!"
And FF fans say that Marvel throwing them under a bridge is a recent thing..
>>83972810
No, not necessarily Iron Fisting the tiger, just a generic martial arts exoticism animal hypnosis thing.
>Writer: Mary Jo Duffy
This woman is one of the biggest writers on this title, along with Busiek and Priest (back before his name was Christopher Priest), although unlike the other two she never quite reached their levels of fame.
>>83972941
>No, not necessarily Iron Fisting the tiger,
See, I know what you mean, but I can't help but giggle at your particular phrasing. But that's what happens when your hero's name and power shares the name as a sexual act.
>>83972984
And I forgot the damn pic, because i r smrt.
>>83972948
Which is a shame, because she wrote some funny buddy cop comedy adventures.
I like to think Danny is reminded of his fight with Sabertooth, where he ended the fight by saying "As strong as he is, if he were trained, he'd be unstoppable!" and trying to help his buddy Luke out.
>>83973002
Speaking of funny comedy adventures, I'm suddenly realizing that we haven't seen the soda machine in a while. Has Luke finally slain his greatest nemesis?
>>83973046
Is he not living at the Gem any more?
>>83972948
>she never quite reached their levels of fame.
Well, that must be because Kelly Sue Deconnick was the first female writer ever, and Mary Jo Duffy didn't really exist.
Seriously tho- Female writer, does the Shirtless Beefcake Cage level go up, or go down?
>>83973071
Man, if you only waited another minute, Anon...
>>83973087
>Well, that must be because Kelly Sue Deconnick was the first female writer ever
Is this a meme? I thought Gail Simone was the first female writer?
>Does the Shirtless Beefcake Cage level go up, or go down?
Well it used to be basically every issue he'd lose his shirt, so it's really hard to go up from there.
>>83973087
Remember when Simone was The Female Comics Writer?
I get a few of them go after Luke first, since he's a bigger target, but he's not exactly subtle about having bulletproof skin. Why do they ALL forget that?
>>83973046
>Has Luke finally slain his greatest nemesis?
Is he still working out of the Gem? He may have conceded victory to the soda machine when he abortively tried to move to Chicago.
Also, Luke, there are worse Sugar Daddies to have than Danny.
I mean, it wouldn't work any better on Danny, but I'd still try.
The curator is the bad guy. I don't know how, why, or anything else, but no good guys have beards that pointy, with a stache that tiny.
>>83973151
It's not as bad as Superman comics.
>>83973156
>He may have conceded victory to the soda machine when he abortively tried to move to Chicago.
Apparently the machine has accepted his victory.
>>83973128
>Is this a meme? I thought Gail Simone was the first female writer?
Nah, just me voicing resentment over no good punk kids making a big stink over "representation" and other such bullshit while ignoring any historical evidence that comics existed at any point between 1967 and 5 years ago.
>>83973221
Nah, the machine's still taunting him in its way.
>>83973167
So this isn't the same Suerte with the goofy roulette chest thing, then, right?
>That advertisement in the 2nd panel to read X-Men, subtle as a brick to the face
Speaking of, have YOU been reading X-Anon's storytimes?
>>83973253
Are these the same kids who think it's super progressive that Carol is Captain Marvel even though she's the third woman to be Captain Marvel and is probably getting more push than the others because she's the first straight white one?
>>83973253
People like that make me feel bad as someone who only got into this hobby recently, yet actually did the damn homework instead of whining about the industry being unfriendly to newcomers.
>>83973308
Yep, even the Dazzler threads.
>Suddenly the Living Monolith
>>83973308
>Speaking of, have YOU been reading X-Anon's storytimes?
I've been meaning to, but the only threads I managed to read along live were the first chunk of Dazzler ones.
I really need to get on that. Wish Desustorage did in tab picture opening, rather than a tab per window. Reads faster that way.
>>83973354
>>83973392
Good, then you can probably guess where this story takes place.
>>83973340
Really, this is the easiest time to get into comics. Even if you don't pirate, you can still wiki stuff that confuses you.
>>83973318
Nailed it on the head.
But on that note: Marvel characters named Marvel are all terrible at keeping their names except for the Black Marvel.
Like, there are like what, 6 Marvel Boys?
Do you think anyone fighting this guy ever stops to think "Huh, I'm fighting a man who's dick is as big as I am?"
>>83973448
All right, let's take a crack at this one.
There's Seven Captain Marvels.
The original Mar-Vell, who never changed his name.
Monica Rambeau, who became Photon, Pulsar, and then Spectrum.
There's Genis-Vell, who became Photon (and if he came back, I want him to try to become Spectrum, just for Monica to tell him to fuck off and not steal her name AGAIN).
Phyla-Vell was the fourth, and then she became Quasar and then Martyr.
There's technically Khn'nr, who was mind controlled to think he was the original Mar-Vell, and never changed his name.
There was Noh-Varr, who was never technically CALLED Marvel Boy, but he starred in a book by that name so I'll count it, then he was the 6th Captain Marvel under Stormin' Norman, and then he was the generically named "Protector".
Finally there's Carol Danvers, who was originally the first Ms. Marvel, then she was Binary, then she was Warbird, then Ms. Marvel again, and then she was Captain Marvel.
There's six/seven (they gave even less of a fuck in the early days) Marvel boys.
First was Martin Burns, who was technically also the 2nd Marvel Boy because they gave him two different origins
Then there's Robert Grayson, who became The Crusader, Blue Marvel, and then The Uranian.
Then there's Wendell Vaughn, who had the shortlived title of "Marvel Man" later on, before finally settling on the title he became famous for, Quasar.
Then there's Vance Astrovik, who was originally Major Victory, but then he went back in time to help his teenage self master his powers, who THEN became Marvel Boy, before settling on Justice.
Then there was David Bank, who was a mutant, but was somehow even less relevant than anyone else on this list.
Finally there was Noh-Varr, who I listed earlier.
There's actually FOUR Ms. Marvels.
First there's Carol Danvers, who I mentioned earlier.
Then there was Sharon Ventura, who later got a dose of Cosmic Rays and became She-Thing.
Then there's everyone's favorite manipulative psycholosist Karla Sofen, also known as Moonstone, who took on the name Meteorite for a while, before being Ms. Marvel during Dark Reign with Noh-Varr.
Finally there's Kamala Khan, who hasn't changed her name yet.
Fuck me sideways, that took forever to look up. I haven't even heard of most of those Marvel Boys.
Huh, I thought Nightcrawler brought his clothes with him when he bamf'd? Or is his uniform special.
Well, at least Colleen isn't still mad about the mind meld.
>"Oh dear!"
That's a surprisingly mundane reaction to your door being knocked in, along with the guard.
I forget if this actually takes place after Dark Phoenix, but it sounds like it should, given that he isn't bothering to think of Jean when he mentions "the stronger X-Men".
>Disguises? What's that?
>>83973837
>>83973849
Plus three Marvel Girls, Jean, Rachel, and Valeria, two thirds of whom were also Phoenix, and all of which eventually discarded hero names altogether.
>>83974018
Fuck, I forgot about Marvel Girl.
It's surprisingly understated, but I think this is one of Luke's biggest strength showings for a long time.
Hey, at least Danny thinks to ask about it before smashing it. Most heroes wouldn't bother.
So now that I'm thinking about it, I think that we haven't seen Luke lose his shirt once since Duffy started writing. Or maybe it started earlier.
I know it's probably just dated, but I like to imagine that Misty and Danny really are just both horrible dancers.
Man, if only that guy in the 6th panel didn't have that random spanish in there, I could totally make a "LOOK, IT'S TONY STARK!" joke.
Man, Aquila is kind of a dick.
Man, DW looks surprisingly big in the 3rd panel.
>>83974096
I'm bowing out for sleep and finishing this thread tomorrow.
Before I go, though- Multi-issue gaps happened before.
And hurray, a South American hero?/villain?
Always nice to have more global distribution of supers.
>>83974290
>Multi-issue gaps happened before.
What do you mean?
>And hurray, a South American hero?/villain?
In short, he's a hero who just has the bad luck of constantly assuming Power Man and Iron Fist are villains.
>Gun to the head
>Spits on his face
Don't worry Anons, I know THAT is racist, at least.
>>83971653
They need a cartoon series
>"We don't work after five."
Man, how often do you get to stop a bad guy by taking a break?
>>83974413
Their EMH episode was freaking great.
Another day, another Daily Bugle article where they shit on superheroes.
>"I don't get it, we're no criminals! Why would a reputable paper like the Bugle print that?"
Oh Danny, my sweet summer child...
>>83972023
Danny's "who?" remark is my favorite part
Welcome to basically the only reason I bothered to storytime Deadly Hands of Kung Fu. Bob Diamond, of the Sons of the Tiger is a major supporting character in Power Man and Iron Fist.
Pages like this were the primarily evidence people used against that AAIronFist trend a while back, where being a privilaged twit when it comes to a lot of things was a major part of Danny's early characterization.
Of course, that's a thing he eventually has to grow out of, so it isn't a thing in modern books.
For those of you who weren't here when we did Iron Fist, Alan here is one of Danny's friends who was a former IRA bomber, who quit after a bomb he planted killed innocent people.
You probably won't be seeing a sympathetic former terrorist in the Netflix series.
You were glare so hard, you suddenly switch genders?
Seeing Misty without her amazing afro feels wrong.
>>83972777
Well Bendis brought him back briefly. I do wonder if he'll ever pop up in the Netflix shows (I was hoping for him in the 1st season of LC because he needs some friends on the show) and Wyatt Russel should be cast as him.
>>83974768
I'd have to see him clean-shaven (more importantly I'd have to see him ACT).
Misty's main character conflict is that she lost her police job after losing her arm.
Yet she has a bionic arm giving her super strength, which she can easily control. WHY can't she just join the police again?
If you read the original Iron Fist run, the country of Halwan should be familiar to you. If not, you'll be caught up.
>"I heard her threaten him with torture and a lingering death, I just thought she was just being colorful."
This guy is surprisingly memorable, despite the fact that he never shows up again.
Gadget's a smart man.
>"My personal bodyguards will kill you like the dog you are!"
You mean like your last one?
All right Anons, let's finish up with these last two issues, and call it a night!
>>83973931
Awwwwwww Danny and Misty are OTP
>>83975440
One day they'll be back together, Anon. Have hope.
Oh hey, Luke finally got his shirt damaged!
Oh hey, it's this guy!
I guess this means that Danny could presumably beat Quicksilver.
Damn, this page was supposed to go before >>83975566
I guess I'm still a bit tired
>"No hard feelings. After all, the world's full of super-fast guys wearing blue and gold costumes, right?"
Man, he's pretty snarky for a guy who was just getting his ass kicked.
Danny, if you just gave a LITTLE bit more info, that wouldn't come back to bite you.
"Luke's in trouble, but we're taking care of it."
And for those who weren't here for the Power Man solo days, here's Thunderbolt's origin.
Well, except this. This part's new.
And let's finish up with this issue for tonight, and hope the story's over.
Wow, that's not a bad plan.
I feel like this shouldn't hold him.
Don't... don't monologue in front of the masked heroes. You have no idea who's under the mask.
After knocking down the Living Monolith from his ankle, this doesn't seem as impressive, sadly.
>Luck and Death
Well, as much as I'm sure you want to see the return of Senor Muerte, I'm afraid we'll have to leave it off with this for now. See you tomorrow night for more Power Man and Iron Fist!
>>83975957
Good night!
>>83974644
The Marvelix series is set when he's just returned to NYC, though. I think part of the problem is most people have just read the IFF, where he's an American-settled 32/3 year old, not a FOB American-K'un-Lunian, who doesn't quite realise his privileged position, yet.
>>83973221
>Bugle has the scoop
>JJJ says Luke & IF are in cahoots with Spider-Man
>>83972056
Did Danny just Iron Pimp slap a guy?
