But yeah. Of the two Vriska fans I'm friends with, one was HUGELY disappointed by what Vriska's character arc ended up being, and the other straight up doesn't want to talk about it.
From what I've seen, the satisfied Vriska fans are either:
1. Waifufags who want Vriska to step on their dicks and get off to people complaining about her role in the story;
2. Emotionally vulnerable teens who consider her a role model because they don't know any better;
or 3. Pretentious readers who think it's "deep" and "subversive" to let your characters be genuine Mary Sues for the sake of irony
Even if you're satisfied with her arc (or lack thereof), you've got to admit it took away from the comic, rather than adding to it.
I like Vriska as a concept (or I did until the retcon, at least), but she hurt Homestuck as a story. And that's a shame.

The slide is all about why a lot of people dislike the ending, not why the ending is objectively shit.
The ending broke a lot of things in traditional storytelling, and a lot of those things were things people liked in storytelling, shit like resolving your main plot. Naturally people aren't going to like it.
Understanding where Homestuck straight up fails is a bit of a more difficult critique to pull off, because you need to first define where exactly shit started to go south, but on its own it's not hard to see why the ending got shit on.

Vriska beat Lord English. She was needed to do this. Let's say that she could only do this by being a god tier as well. Vriska reached the god tier because Aradia killed her. This happened as revenge for Vriska's psychic double reacharound. But this itself was only inflicted because Vriska lost an arm and eye, due to Scratch blowing up her cue ball.
Scratch blew it up because he was shocked and angered to learn that she owned at all. This is because the ball had been concealed by the Zahhaks, most prominently E%ecutor Darkleer. Darkleer is another version of Horuss Zahhak.

I think Nepeta would come off pretty poorly as a guy; a lot of Neps negative features and even some of her positive ones are made bearable given her cuteness. Whilst it wasn't explored at all, the idea of a savage hunter troll in a cute package is pretty appealing as a character trait, being a dude kind of eliminates that appeal.
Now Eridan would take the change like a fish to water. He'd instantly become the top tier crazy, desperate waifu, especially given the fashion sense and supposed good looks. There's even his whole cross dressing thing to throw into the mix for people who are into that sort of thing.

Some thoughts on this image. I mostly agree with it's premise, but it's focus is off in places.
First a rewrite of some of the earlier slides:
"The audience cannot care about the the beauty of a new frog with Lord English at large. You let all the air out of the story by acting like it doesn't even matter."
- the audience isn't ACTUALLY terrified that Lord English will kill them. They're just invested in the conclusion, and disappointed that it's treat like it never mattered.
"no hugging dad etc. until the threat is over"
- same as before.
Now some commentary on the later slides:
I'd argue that Vriska straddles uncomfortably between being the "big good", like Vultan in Flash Gordon or Zeus in anything about Hercules, as well as the main character. This worked when she was supposed to be an obnoxious, flawed character seeking too much attention and importance, but then it became her straight-up role in the story.
The comic's darkest hour/s already occured with Jack's ascenscion, Jack's transformation into Bec Noir, Lord English's summoning and Caliborn's false predomination. Game Over's isse was that it stretched the Darkest Houryness of the comic too thin.
Hussie pretty much went against his own lengthy rants in the comic during the Trickster arc and Caliborn's tedious quest by granting the undo button. I understand it's meant to be poetic, because Caliborn unleashed the button and it's supposed to be his brutal comeuppance, but all it does is reduce every other character in the story to a prop in the tale of Caliborn's punishment. Every other character's actions and roles in the story boil down to the chain reactions of Caliborn's decisions, their own will never indepedently realised.

I'd argue the reason Homestuck's dialog worked so well before later Act 6 is that it never had to do contrived exposition, only natural stuff. Characters like Rose, Doc Scratch, the sprites and even the Trolls in general covered many bases, but ultimately the black text narration of Hussie himself was always there. By the end, only Spade Slick segments recieved this. Calliope's dialog marked the beginning of contrived exposition, which we all anticipated to be a flaw on her part. Like Vriska however, it was played straight.
I'm not too sure about the character vs. plot dichotomy employed here. But I will say that a lot of people read the story for the mechanics. They were interested in how Lord English made himself so powerful, and in turn how the Heroes would beat him. This was largely unresolved. Collide was satisfying for its action, but much was glazed over in terms of the world of Homestuck's logic during the later parts of the comic.

It's an interesting idea to think about actually, how would the story have been constructed if Karkat wasn't present, or one of the primary cast of the trolls? Given how awful the retcon was for a number of the characters and their arcs, you could argue it'd make no real difference in the end.

Let's be real, Vriska is a social and emotional cripple. She doesn't understand people, she does just enough to carefully sidestep retribution for her actions. And she only manages to when there's a bigger threat that makes everyone else think her presence is justified.
To quote (Vriska) herself, she never feels "ACTUALLY good a8out [her] life in a way that feels real, instead of forced." Vriska is someone who cannot find happiness. She's addicted to heroism, power and attention, the only things that feel good to her, and she needs her fix. The rush of satisfaction that comes with defeating Lord English will fade away with time, and then she'll feel frustrated and bored again.
She'll probably murder a starving carapacian from stealing a loaf of bread, or secretly fund Jack Noir's developing mafia until they control half of Can Town, just so she can take them down. And she'll probably end up bullying someone entirely innocent like WV to entertain herself, since she's used to getting away with that sort of thing.
At some point, that shit will no longer fly. The kids will get their shit together and bring out increasingly heavy punishments until she changes her ways for good or ends up exiled from society altogether. (If she doesn't become an actual threat and die a JUST death first.)
THEN she'll begin the life of a criminal scum, forced to hide from the kids' justice, committing unremarkable acts of petty thievery in order to feel important. Addiction is a powerful thing.
Eventually, she'll realize her miserable situation. No longer in the spotlight, having fallen from her pedestal of importance, completely out of luck, finding herself unambiguously playing the bad guy, Vriska will do the greatest, most selfless act she can accomplish: she will an hero.
No one will know, few will care, fewer will remember her. Karma doesn't need to lift a finger: in a fitting conclusion to her story, Vriska Serket will punish herself.

Vriska starts off not understanding other people, which is why she's so fuck-awful to Tavros. Towards the end she still big glitches, and it's frankly evil that the story never redresses this.

A few threads ago one anon was talking about making a game and it got me thinking. I've messed around with a fair bit of procedural generation stuff, and made a few little planets and things before, but you can only do so much with that while making sense.
The lands in HS though, they're all sorts of crazy, and that'd make some cool subject matter. So, I'm thinking that making a land generator might be a pretty fun project. Might hook it up to a twitter bot or something so it posts a new land each day.
What do you guys think? Might be helpful for people making fics, planning games or whatever.

John's retcon powers are inconsistent and behave arbitrarily to enact whatever outcome the plot demands. Sometimes they act like stable time loops, sometimes they create an offshoot timeline and make that the "new" alpha timeline. That means that retconned history isn't always erased. It's only erased sometimes, when convenient for the story.

Die's doll has no influence on the existence or status of timelines at ALL. The doll is a very simple artifact - it travels sideways through time, to the nearest alternative timeline where everyone pinned in the doll is dead.
I think the segment in the void where the Felt was revived threw everyone for a wheeler. The doll only worked that way because it was the void, so there are no "timelines".
