I will agree with you insofar as Vader, for whatever reason, gave up a lot of his ambitions when he was sealed into his armor. It's possible that this is an indication for how he learned from his error with Obi-Wan. Or he really did lose his ambitions and settled for merely securing the Empire. In some ways while LotS show that Vader feels stronger in the Force he still ends up being little more than Sidious' attack dog. Something the comics set after ANH hammer home.
In this way Kylo Ren remaining Snoke's lapdog IS consistent with wanting to be Vader, but in the worst way. Ahem, worst way in more ways than one.

It's the only one, so far, that actually expands the world past Return of the Jedi.
Aside from Uprising (a mobile game) and The Force Awakens, everything else is set between 1-6 or VERY shortly after.
So yeah, sadly, the "most important" book is also the worst. This is a case where I certainly would recommend a more fun read like Lords of the Sith.
I don't think Aftermath is even THAT important. I think, in time, as we get more stuff in that time period, Aftermath will become significantly less important. It just that right now, it's all we have.
Got to the Maul vs Kenobi issue until the thread was about dead, so I never got to voice an opinion there, but I'm baffled why people think Maul would win easily versus him based purely on the movies, and their obvious limitations.
For one thing, Vader was quite obviously capable of taking on far more acrobatic opponents when animated, showing that they're not using the limitations of the film as a baseline.
For another, Obi-Wan has been seen in both film and the new comics to be reflecting on the Force and biding his time, whereas maul is in an obviously miserable and pathetic position with no outlet for his rage.
In terms of mastery of the force, Obi-Wan would have Maul beat by a large margin, and it's the force that truly matters in duels.
I'm personally hoping for a duel that displays Obi-Wan as a rock against Maul, barely moving but for instinctive, minor and vital adjustments, and not giving ground at all to his assault.

I'd swear this is just a /tv/ bait thing but when I was checking there to see how they reacted to Ahsoka's ambiguous ending they were telling people who claimed Rey was a mary sue to fuck off.
The harshest generalized opinion I think you could get is that TFA is flawed but passable. Which, oddly enough, is how the Prequels are viewed too. They just happen to be flawed in different ways.

If it helps, broaden "Prequels" to "Prequel Era" to refer as much to the setting as the movies. That improves the outlook.

That's because it's been a decade since the prequels ended and now a lot of people who were kids when the prequels were new are adults now who look back on them fondly. When they were new, longtime fans of the original trilogy despised them. There are entire feature length documentaries about how disgusted OT fans were by the prequels when they came out.

I like the Plinkett Reviews. They point out the flaws of the prequels and they're right.
The only thing I don't like is their interpretation of characters. It seems to be all based on speculation and popular theories that many people had and wanted to believe when they were watching the movies or discussing them.

It's not just that, by far. I'm a child of the 80s, didn't like the Prequels at first but my opinion of them has softened. It was never full on fall to the Dark Side hate, and even then I agreed with the sentiments of several reviewers that no matter what the movies had been they would never have lived up to the hype. TFA is dealing with that too.
Thing is it's hard to hold onto hate for so long. Helps that TCWs helped restore my faith in the setting. But I may have been an easy sale because even when I was disappointed in the way the Prequels presented the story I still appreciated the atmosphere.
I'm distrustful of such documentaries. Finding people who are willing to act out their disgust and play it up to the camera are easy to find. After all, we've seen the "Alliance to Restore the EU" jokers.

The shittiness of TPM even got mentioned in stuff like The Simpsons. Sure, sentiment gets exaggerated and their quality was subject to hyperbole, but the prequels have always been widely reviled or at least dismissed. Hate was pretty big.
