I think its important to post this again

In truth, Darth Vader is gone now. The body Luke eases gently to the floor is Anakin Skywalker.
"Luke, help me take this mask off," Anakin says, no longer booming."
"But you'll die."
"Nothing can stop that now. Just for once let me look on you with my own eyes."

It takes Luke a moment but he soon discovers how the front of Vader's mask can be detached from the helmet and removed. When he does so, the sound of Vader's respirator, already ragged, stops. And now Luke sees for himself the face of his father: scarred and battered into something barely human. And now Anakin sees his son's face: a handsome face creased with concern and, yes, bearing its own battle scars. But at least Anakin sees him not as a Jedi or a warrior or a threat or a mistake, but as his son...and Padme's son.

And Anakin smiles. Not a smile like the Emperor's. Or a crazed grin like Darth Maul's. Not even a smirk like Anakin might have shown Ahsoka back in his Jedi days. But a real smile. The smile that only Padme ever saw.
"Now...go, my son," Anakin struggles to say. "Leave me."
"No. You're coming with me. I can't leave you hear! I've got to save you!"
"You already have, Luke. You were right. You were right about me. Tell your sister...you were right."
"Father...I won't leave you."

It's a time-waster, nothing more. The character roster is the only thing good about it; there's no story, and it's only a matter of time before you either hit a wall in progress or it becomes too tedious. Not to mention complacent gaming syndrome up the ass.

>As for the others, I guess when you're surrounded by living legends you've heard all the stories by now. Hell, everyone learned about the Death Star II when they were told of the Emperor's death. Next thing we know "WEESA FREE!" and people are mosh pitting Stormtroopers over the sides of buildings.

I can kind of see that for Poe, I guess. Obviously Kylo Ren would know all this stuff because Mom and Dad and Uncle Luke would be telling him the stories themselves, and Poe, as a high-ranking Resistance member, would be reasonably up on his history, but everyone still seemed WAY too cavalier about "it's another Death Star". They not only react like they all saw a Death Star a week ago, but like they know they're in a Star Wars movie and they know exactly where this plotline's going.

But Finn and Rey both should have far more limited knowledge. Rey has been on Jakku since she was a little girl, with no formal education to speak of, and she didn't exactly seem like a social butterfly. Anakin, when we first meet him in The Phantom Menace, has lots of local Tatooine knowledge and knows lots about fixing things (because it's his job) and podracing (because it's his hobby), but everything else he knows is tall tales and half-truths about how Jedi can't be killed and how the angels on Iego are so beautiful. And that's just a busy little port like Mos Espa, not a totally isolated backwater like Jakku. How is this scavenging hermit girl such a history buff that she gets all giddy about Luke Skywalker and Han Solo?

And Finn makes even less sense. He was taken from a family he'll never know and raised to do one thing. The entire sum of his knowledge should divide neatly into two categories: First Order training and First Order propaganda. I can see him knowing who Luke is, because Luke's FO Public Enemy #1, but I can't see him knowing hardly anything TRUE about Luke, and I can't see him knowing much about Han at all, let alone seeing Han as a "war hero".

>They not only react like they all saw a Death Star a week ago
They don't even seem all that bothered that the Hosnian System got wiped out. It's just kind of a thing that happened. For all the weight the Hosnian massacre has on the characters and importance to the story, the weapon may as well have just destroyed an uninhabited planet as a test shot.

>Oh wow, they have a big weapon, that sucks
>We should do something about it, I guess
The New Republic's capital was destroyed, billions killed, surprise superweapon none of them apparently knew about... and that's as much reaction as they get.

Alderaan didn't get much fanfare either and Leia doesn't seem to be that greatly affected by it afterward, but at the very least she does show distress when it's being threatened and its destruction has a significant effect on the story.

Jakku was the site of the last major battle between the Imperial Remnant and the fledgling New Republic. The first settlers? Survivors from the battle whose ships crashed. It's supposed to have a lot of vets, too. People who know those ships are good at figuring how how to navigate the wrecks and know what's valuable.

So basically she's heard a lot of stories. A LOT of stories. When? Who knows because they don't gab during the cleaning of the salvage or apparently they get hit. Pity because it would have been nice for Rey to listen to old war stories and legends of the Jedi. Maybe an old Wookiee to show why the locals might know his language.

Leia seems very affected at least during Alderaan's destruction. And then Luke, Han, and Ben are totally aghast at the wreckage field, and even on the Death Star Ben is like "the plans must be delivered safely or other star systems will suffer the same fate as Alderaan".

There's a much bigger deal made out of it, and one thing that helped is that the movie built up Alderaan like it was the Emerald City before Tarkin blew it up. The crawl says Leia's headed there. Leia tells Vader she's headed there. R2's message tells Ben and Luke to head there. Ben's like "we gotta go to Alderaan" and Luke eventually agrees to come with. They buy passage with Han and say "Alderaan" like three times in that conversation alone. By the time the Death Star -- also mentioned in the crawl, along with its ability to wipe out star systems -- is in orbit around Alderaan, Alderaan is Mecca and we are all Muslims.

And suddenly Mecca is gone.

Starkiller Base's ability to wipe out planets is introduced in the same scene where it fires for the first time. We were just told of a "weapon" for the first time in the first Snoke scene. The Hosnian system is introduced, not even named, just in time for it to be destroyed. It's named later, casually, off-handedly, by Poe after the Battle of Takodana. The movie has just done absolutely zero work building up this scene, and expects an emotional response from the viewer that it hasn't earned in the slightest. It's all imitation with no understanding. It's like a cargo cult.

And it even adds Hux doing a big dramatic villain speech about how he's going to destroy a government the audience once saw mentioned briefly in the opening crawl. We have no idea who these guys are, why the First Order has a beef with them, or anything whatsoever about the situation but we're still expected to find his whole "LAST DAY OF THE REPUBLIC" bullshit stirring and chilling.

He was referring specifically to the Sith Wang Trick. Telekinetic, projectable, and completely inSidious. He likes to deploy it during long boring Senate hearings. When people complain he just says, "Oh, it's those pesky Jedi! You must sponsor another bill increasing the funding of the military!"

Because he can have his fun and still profit.

Jedi's novelisation is really fucking goofy. The decision to transcribe the vocalizations of every droid/alien is the stupidest fucking thing ever. It still gives a slightly more complete picture of the events, although it wasn't created off such an early script as SW or ESB, the Ewoks are generally treated as less 'cute' and more just a crazy primitive race. Here's the same scene from the novel.

In the midst of this uproar, Luke had made it, somehow, to the main docking
bay—where he was trying to carry the hulking deadweight of his father's weakening
body toward an Imperial shuttle. Halfway there, his strength finally gave out,
though; and he collapsed under the strain.
Slowly he rose again. Like an automaton, he hoisted his father's body over his
shoulder and stumbled toward one of the last remaining shuttles.
Luke rested his father on the ground, trying to collect strength one last time, as
explosions grew louder all around them. Sparks hissed in the rafters; one of the
walls buckled, and smoke poured through a gaping fissure. The floor shook.
Vader motioned Luke closer to him. "Luke, help me take this mask off."
Luke shook his head. "You'll die."
The Dark Lord's voice was weary. "Nothing can stop that now. Just once let
me face you without it. Let me look on you with my own eyes."
Luke was afraid. Afraid to see his father as he really was. Afraid to see what
person could have become so dark—the same person who'd fathered Luke, and Leia.
Afraid to know the Anakin Skywalker who lived inside Darth Vader.

Vader, too, was afraid—to let his son see him, to remove this armored mask that
had been between them so long. The black, armored mask that had been his only
means of existing for over twenty years. It had been his voice, and his breath, and
his invisibility—his shield against all human contact. But now he would remove it;
for he would see his son before he died.
Together they lifted the heavy helmet from Vader's head—inside the mask
portion, a complicated breathing apparatus had to be disentangled, a speaking
modulator and view-screen detached from the power unit in back. But when the
mask was finally off and set aside, Luke gazed on his father's face.
It was the sad, benign face of an old man. Bald, beardless, with a mighty scar
running from the top of his head to the back of the scalp, he had unfocused, deepset,
dark eyes, and his skin was pasty white, for it had not seen the sun in two decades.
The old man smiled weakly; tears glazed his eyes, now. For a moment, he looked
not too unlike Ben.
It was a face full of meanings, that Luke would forever recall. Regret, he saw
most plainly. And shame. Memories could be seen flashing across it…memories
of rich times. And horrors. And love, too.
It was a face that hadn't touched the world in a lifetime. In Luke's lifetime.
He saw the wizened nostrils twitch, as they tested a first, tentative smell. He saw the
head tilt imperceptibly to listen—for the first time without electronic auditory
amplification. Luke felt a pang of remorse that the only sounds now to be heard
were those of explosions, the only smells, the pungent sting of electrical fires. Still,
it was a touch. Palpable, unfiltered.
He saw the old eyes focus on him. Tears burned Luke's cheeks, fell on his
father's lips. His father smiled at the taste.
It was a face that had not seen itself in twenty years.

Vader saw his son crying, and knew it must have been at the horror of the face
they boy beheld.
It intensified, momentarily, Vader's own sense of anguish—to his crimes, now,
he added guilt at the imagined repugnance of his appearance. But then this brought
him to mind of the way he used to look—striking, and grand, with a wry tilt to his
brow that hinted of invincibility and took in all of life with a wink. Yes, that was
how he'd looked once.
And this memory brought a wave of other memories with it. Memories of
brotherhood, and home. His dear wife. The freedom of deep space. Obi-wan.
Obi-wan, his friend…and how that friendship had turned. Turned, he knew not
how—but got injected, nonetheless, with some uncaring virulence that festered,
until…hold. These were memories he wanted none of, not now. Memories of
molten lava, crawling up his back…no.
This boy had pulled him from that pit—here, now, with this act. This boy was
good.
The boy was good, and the boy had come from him—so there must have been
good in him, too. He smiled up again at his son, and for the first time, loved him.
And for the first time in many long years, loved himself again, as well.
Suddenly he smelled something—flared his nostrils, sniffed once more.
Wildflowers, that was what it was. Just blooming; it must be spring.
And there was thunder—he cocked his head, strained his ears. Yes, spring
thunder, for a spring rain. To make the flowers bloom.
Yes, there…he felt a raindrop on his lips. He licked the delicate droplet…but
wait, it wasn't sweetwater, it was salty, it was…a teardrop.
He focused on Luke once again, and saw his son was crying. Yes that was it, he
was tasting his boy's grief—because he looked so horrible; because he was so
horrible.

>>81468617
But he wanted to make it all right for Luke, he wanted Luke to know he wasn't
really ugly like this, not deep inside, not all together. With a little self-deprecatory
smile, he shook his head at Luke, explaining away the unsightly beast his son saw.
"Luminous beings are we, Luke—not this crude matter."
Luke shook his head, too—to tell his father it was all right, to dismiss the old
man's shame, to tell him nothing mattered now. And everything—but he couldn't
talk.
Vader spoke again, even weaker—almost inaudible. "Go, my son. Leave
me."
At that, Luke found his voice. "No. You're coming with me. I'll not leave
you here. I've got to save you."
"You already have, Luke," he whispered. He wished, briefly, he'd met Yoda, to
thank the old Jedi for the training he'd given Luke…but perhaps he'd be with Yoda
soon, now, in the ethereal oneness of the Force. And with Obi-wan.
"Father, I won't leave you," Luke protested. Explosions jarred the docking bay
in earnest, crumbling one entire wall, splitting the ceiling. A jet of blue flame shot
from a gas nozzle nearby. Just beneath it the floor began to melt.
Vader pulled Luke very close, spoke into his ear. "Luke, you were right…and
you were right about me…Tell your sister…you were right."
With that, he closed his eyes, and Darth Vader—Anakin Skywalker—died.
A tremendous explosion filled the back of the bay with fire, knocking Luke flat
to the ground. Slowly, he rose again; and like an automaton, stumbled toward one of
the last remaining shuttles.

-So yeah, it's neat. And then R2 or Chewie speaks and you get BEEPBOOPDOOPS or RGHGHGRGROOONKBARK. I am totally serious.

True. I've only been on it a week and it's already gotten really grindy. Farm the widgets to upgrade the characters to unlock more levels to grind. I keep setting it to auto on lower levels and it occurred to me the other day that I'm basically just letting the game play itself. Total WTF moment. How is this supposed to be fun?

I've read that buying (not with real money because fuck EA) the Chromiums is a waste of time. Takes luck to get anyone good. The advice I read was use crystals to buy Cantina Energy and farm the Squad table. Unlock Ahsoka and/or Qui-Gon to start then just expand your roster or farm shards to upgrade them. Besides free Bronzes don't seem bad, though so far I've only gotten the Ewok Scout (again), the Geo Soldier, and just now the Jedi Knight Guardian. Really basic, I suspect by design. Everything about this game seems to try to make you throw money at it.

Maybe the extra content will help, but I'm not sure what exactly it brings to the table. So to speak.

Because idiots are butthurt about ewoks.

For real, though, the biggest problem of ROTJ is that it has to clean up ESB's mess. Back in 1980, ESB got very tepid reviews, and for a good reason: when the credits roll, none of the plotlines have been resolved. The original single plotline splits in two after the Battle of Hoth, and these two plotlines never reunite, they just sort of briefly pass each other in the hallway on Cloud City. Luke's training is incomplete, he's just had a bombshell dropped on him, but no time left to process any of that, come back in three years. Han's frozen and has been taken away, now we've got to go find him, but no time left to work on that, come back in three years. Everything the movie was building towards is left hanging.

Episode VI was originally going to be Rescue Han: The Movie, followed by three more movies before the Emperor's death, but Lucas decided he wanted to just get it over and done with, so he compressed ROTJ so that its first half was Rescue Han: The Mini-Movie, and then chunks of what were going to be VII, VIII, and IX were Frankenstein'd together to be the rest of the movie, so that all of ESB's hanging plot threads could be resolved in a single film.

When one movie is doing the work of four, it kind of suffers. ROTJ feels disjointed -- as thrilling as the Rescue Han half is, it doesn't feel like it has much to do with anything in the second half of the movie. On top of that, the three parts of the Battle don't interact with one another at all outside of the destruction of the shield, and the duel in particular feels very removed from the rest of the action, even if it's an amazing duel in itself.

People complain about ewoks, but the truth is that the ground battle is just the weakest section of the Battle of Endor. The space battle shows us just enough to be exciting but leave us wanting more, and the duel is unbelievably tense throughout, which leaves the ground battle feeling weak by comparison.
>>
Man, I don't know how I ever missed it but I'm only just recently realizing that the V-wings and the Jedi Starfighters at the beginning of Episode III are supposed to look like proto- or just generally "before" TIE fighters.
>>
>>81468711

Man I really don't think he could have pulled off nine movies of material. Having Luke finally face the Emperor around the age he is now in Ep VII is cool and all, but holy shit that would have been such a goddamned gamble. It doesn't help that that specific idea (The Emperor being the final boss or even a threat at all, and Luke facing him as an old dude) wasn't even on the table during most of Star Wars/Ep IV's creation. He was making a lot of this up as he went along.
>>
>>81468711
>Luke and Vader era VII, VIII, and IX

Sounds like it would have been better than the sequel trilogy we're getting.

For one thing, making Luke the protagonist of two trilogies removes the notion of one trilogy/protagonist per generation

It really could have gone like movie serials where there's no real formal structure of a grand saga, just stories to be told, like the Trek movies.

Instead the main trilogies are now all about the older generation fucking up and having to be rescued by the next.
>>
One thing I didn't understand in the battle over Endor was how the Rebel fleet won vs the Imperials. Even without the Super Star Destroyer and the Death Star2 the Empire fleet severely outgunned and outnumbered the Rebels. I've looked it up a few times on the internet and I haven't seen any details on exactly how they pulled it off.
>>
>>81468711

It also doesn't help that the ground battle itself moves in disjointed stages. Once the Ewoks have joined the Rebels, we have the initial "sneak into the bunker". Then the stormtroopers ambush the Rebels and drag them out. Once that's done, the Ewoks show up, and now it's a fight, but this stage of the fight goes on for a LONG time showing off the battle without making a lot of progress towards the goal. Finally, our heroes make it to the bunker door, and we finally get some tense moments as R2 gets taken out and Leia gets shot, when Chewbacca finally saunters over in the AT-ST he picked up while playing Tarzan.

Then Han does his bluff over the AT-ST's communications system to get the bunker open and the fight's over, just like that. It's clumsy, unsatisfying, and doesn't have a lot of suspense or tension, unlike the other two sections of the battle.

Even the Battle of Naboo fares better as a complete ensemble. Each time we cut to a different part of the battle, we see important turning points in the battle. Every time we see part of the Gungan battle, the Gungan situation goes from bad to worse. Every time we see part of the palace fight, the team is forced to improvise a new route because the droids are too thick. Every time we see the duel, we move from one environment to another, and the Jedi either get split up or get back together. And every time we see the space battle, Anakin makes progress towards getting control of his fighter. Ultimately, all four parts of the battle hit their lowest points simultaneously, with Anakin crashing, the Gungans surrendering, the palace team surrendering, and Qui-Gon getting impaled all at the same time, but then the palace team turns the tables on the Viceroy, Anakin takes out the reactor, the Gungans are saved, and all that's left is the duel.

The Battle of Naboo really has a beautiful sense of rhythm and harmony to it. Endor was like a rehearsal for Naboo.
>>
>>81468826
If Lucas had gone ahead with VII, VIII, and IX he probably would have finished IX in the late 90s, just in time to start Phantom Menace

That means no Special Editions and Han always shoots first
>>
>>81468858
It pretty much boils down to the destruction of the DSII leaving such a huge power vacuum and creating such a huge communications breakdown that the majority of the Imperial fleet jumped to hyperspace to figure out their next move.
>>
>>81468814
It and the ARC-170 really bug me as "precursor ships". The ARC-170 is just "Hey look, it splits it's wings like an x-wing, only for no purpose." Why not just keep the headhunters as the precursor to the x-wing?
And the TIEs are literally named and designed around an engine innovation. They invented a crazy good engine and then built a whole fleet of fighters around using said engine to it's fullest. No one needed to be the precursor to that, there doesn't need to be a previous ship shaped like it before they even built the engine.
>>
>>81468884
But that also means no Expanded Universe as we know it.

No Thrawn
No Shadows of the Empire
No Kyle Katarn
>>
>>81468908
ARC-170 would bug me a lot less if it wasn't ugly as shit
>>
>>81468858

I don't think Piett was expecting Ackbar to charge the fleet directly into his lines.

When the Executor was taken out and crashed into the Death Star II, a massive gap appeared in the Imperial fleet's formation, which was thrown into confusion by the death of the admiral. When the Emperor died, he was no longer able to subtly influence the Imperial Fleet, which began to panic and scatter as the Death Star fell apart. From then on it just turned into a rout.

inb4 legends or not canon, I'm just going by what seem to be the most logical explanations.

Filoni said that Ahsoka would not reappear in rebels from here on out, but could we still get an explanation next season?
>>
>>81468949
Just because a story don't real don't mean you can't feel
>>
>>81468961
Probably not. I get the feeling it'll be a long time before we get her fate explained.
>>
>>81468961
In the Q&A he said "it depends on how many seasons we get," so I think we may get her actually properly reappearing if we wait long enough
>>
>>81468919

That doesn't meant here wouldn't be different novels/games to fill up the void. If movies did come out from the 80s all the way into the late 90s, you'd probably actually see even more of them being produced, albeit in much different forms than what we got today. Probably mostly tie in stuff, with some material set in the ancient republic.
>>
>>81468961
Don't worry, anon, he never said that. You can be sure because Filoni barely ever speaks definitely about, well, anything. He said she could have future stories that don't "necessarily" have to be in Rebels. That means? Absolutely nothing one way or the other in Filonispeak.
>>
>>81468858

With the Death Star gone, the Rebel fleet's back is no longer against the wall and they can focus all their attention on the Navy. With both the Death Star AND the Executor gone, the bulk of the Imperial leadership at Endor is gone too, creating a power vacuum.

Now you have no clear leader, and the primary objectives of the mission are an abject failure. Each individual Imperial ship has a strong incentive to flee and save itself to regroup for a later battle, even if they collectively have a strong incentive to stay in the fight. If the weakest links in the chain withdraw, it makes things harder for the remaining fleet, making withdrawal a more attractive option for the next set of weak links.

So morale is in a downward spiral, cowards are chickening out and weakening everyone, and eventually the remaining fleet is small enough that withdrawal becomes the sensible choice for all surviving ships.
>>
>>81468949
But what if we never experienced them to begin with?

Or say Lucas is burned out after IX, the 2000s have no Star Wars films, and the Anakin/Clone Wars era gets the Abrams treatment.only beginning last year?
>>
>>81468949
Who cares what's canon as long as you like it, right? Just don't try to connect the dots between Legends and the new canon before they actually do it.

It's barely a change for the EU since the movies were always more canon than everything else and could be ignored at a moment's whim. That no longer applies. Just enjoy what you want and damn anyone who says you can't.
>>
>>81469120

In a practical sense, the old tiers are all still there. The only real difference is that T (television) tier has been absorbed into G tier, and all new works are going directly into G tier.

I guess they've also moved the "it'sofficially canon" bar up from C to G, but that's not nearly as big a deal as people are making it out to be.
>>
>>81469164
You are absolutely correct that there is a kind of internal canon within Legends, but since it's not really enforced it's almost pretty moot. I'm sure when discussing Legends it sometimes pisses people off to hear that the Ewok movies are just as canon now as Thrawn, for instance. Kind of an Ironic Inception, one level deeper.
>>
>>81469164
It really isn't. It's just that everything after Jedi was always looked at as a big sandbox because no one realistically thought they'd ever officially make anything to come after it, so all their pet stories/characters/whatever are in jeopardy. The simple act of killing Han (even if he's still got some 30 years of breathing room between Jedi and TFA) throws off the entirety of the EU. I dunno why anyone thought any of these characters would realistically get to 'retire' anyway. The books were also struggling with reconciling nearly 60 years of story and making them age at a believable rate. I know they aren't really 'humans' but they were all 70+ by the final stories and only Han seemingly got to 'age' as he was the only one who would point out how fucking old he was/they were on occasion.
>>
>>81469362
I hope the don't shit all over the established old republic/pre phantom menace lore the same way. While a good chunk of it was shit and really should be changed, a lot of the ideas and concepts are really interesting.

I also noticed in the rebels season 2 finale that Ezra picked up the jedi lightsaber with a cross-guard like the Knights of Ren have. I hope the reason behind this design choice is expanded upon in episodes 8 and 9 when we find out more about the Knights.
>>
>>81469601

The TFA visual dictionary established that Kylo Ren's lightsaber is modeled on an ancient design used by the old Jedi Order.

That's why Ezra found a similar saber. That's how they used to make them, back in the day.

>>81470294
So Anakin wasn't actually thinking of Ahsoka in his final moments :(
Well I mean we have no way of confirming or denying it honestly so I suppose it jives
>>
>>81470275

Yes-ish.

The official stance is that novelizations are canon where they align with the films.

It's unclear whether this means "the only canon parts of the novelization are those that are also shown in the movies" or "the novelizations are canon except where they conflict with the movies, in which case the movies take precedent".

The first interpretation means that anything added in the novel that isn't present in the films is non-canon, and you might as well just watch the films and skip the novels completely. The second interpretation means that the novels can add new things to the canon so long as they don't conflict with the movies.

Because people are so caught up on Ewoks that they missed some of Lucas's greatest poetry.

TESB isn't about plot resolution. It's about thematic exploration. You're right about the divorced plot lines, but that's what helps give the movie a sense of unease (a very unease that motivates Luke and highlights an attachment and impulsiveness that could, as with Vader before him, play into the Emperor's favor). It's also why the movie's iconic ending shot is so resonant: our characters are reunited, battered and with one less, but clinging to each other and a greater purpose. You're right about the initially tepid response, but there's a reason perspective on the movie changed over time.

What are these things the females always wear, headdresses or head-panties? Are they required?
>>
>>81474912
I am the biggest waifufag of them all.
I've written a terrible shamefully erotic self aggrandizing post-Rebels fanfic between Ahsoka and a self insert for my own uses and I dare not ever let anybody read it.

They show it sometimes, mostly from Imperial points of view. If you can't see the enemy, you're not supposed to feel bad about killing them in droves. The helmet dehumanizes them.
