This show is heavily inspired by Final Fantasy 8.
Salem, visually, is an amalgamation of Edea, Adel, and Ultimecia. She exists outside of time itself.
She wants to fuck with time itself but she needs Ozpin's aura to do it. She'll settle for Jaune once his aura awakens.
The big theme in the series is time. Expect a lot of time skips, characters aging, the passing of seasons, and time compression.
Summer Rose is a time displaced Ruby from the future. Ruby is really Raven's daughter, just like yang. Summer being her mother is a cover up to justify her existance.
Ruby's love interest is an allegory for the big bad wolf. She'll meet him next season when she gets seperates from RNJR and get's lost in the woods.
The Res trailer is canon amd hasn't happened yet. The cross Ruby weara in place of her Rose belongs to Qrow. He dies.
Time shenanigans will resort in a happy ending for all. Everyone will be dead at the end and Ruby will end up fixing it all, turning back time after killing Salem, who will no longer exist in the past (along with Ozpin).
Series ends with everyone back on their first day at beacon, being welcomed by Headmaster Glynda. Nobody remembers anything except Ruby.

The trailers don't mean anything. They were just girls beating up monsters to cool music. Which was also basically Volume's 1 and 2.
Yeah the setting appeared dark, but tons of shows have a supposedly bleak setting that is otherwise ignored in the grand scheme of things, as do plenty of shows promise dark and serious but never deliver. Look at Fairy Tail. Or One Piece (which got serious and removed plot armor for all of one arc and then reverted)
And while some shows have a fake out early tone it usually gets the real show right away. Not take 3 years.
So yeah RWBY's pretty unique in that regard. It's fairy gutsy.

Hey Anons, I was about Vladmir Propp yesterday, and I thought of something. We all know that RWBY takes its inspiration from Fairy Tales right? So what if its structure takes after Propp's.
I mean think about it. Miles and Kerry said that they expect RWBY to go on longer than RvB and look at the bare bones of the seasons to what is described in Propp's Functions.
Season 1- The cast is sent to Beacon, an unfamiliar envoiriment.
Season 2- We are told that if the barrier falls, there will be severe consequence.
Season 3- The wall falls and the cast are punished with the death of Pyrrha.

I don't think they hate it. This was all planned out long ago, and the guys in charge (Miles, Kerry and Gray) would have had a hand in shaping it. Gray especially seemed passionate about the tonal shift when he wrote a journal entry about it.
I think RWBY Chibi is them moving more towards their kid demographic, as well as the people who enjoy a more light-hearted RWBY.
It's not like it matters anyway. Chibi is just something extra they're doing between Volumes.

Not to mention some kind of memorial scene to give the characters in the show as well as the audiance closure on the character.
