Redemption arcs for former villains rarely works well in comics. When you've got shit like Magneto basically wanting to be Super Hitler for 40+ years it's hard to swallow when they turn him good, or try to.

This is...ok time to throw my two grains of salt.
First off, it makes sense that they would probably have a different design since it's implied that they've been roaming around for a while. So I'm not mad at different designs. I dunno what's up with incorporating the Prime!Ratchet designs his toys/merch nowadays. I can't really complain too much because Ratchet from Prime was one of my favorite characters on that show. But I'm iffy on that design. It's not horrible but it's not as bad as DRIFT.
Drift does NOT look good with a dark gray face. Either light gray or white is good balance for his color palette. Why does anyone think bulky Drift looks good? It doesn't. He's a swordsman, it makes sense that if he uses swords, he's not heavy looking or has a whole lot of kibble on him (i.e. IDW Cyclonus or Windblade) I think it's his legs is what's killing it for me. I like his facial paint he has going on.
I'm not furious because something like this happened to Arcee when she was given new red armor (or body) after Dark Cybertron and her dark gray and pink design was shown off in Combiner Hunters with Windblade. After that, she went back to her original palette. So I'm guessing they're designed like this to do, what else, sell a future line of toys.

For a quick answer:
There are toys at every price range. If you want a pretty decent toy at a reasonable price, try getting a Combiner Wars deluxe-class toy. They're pretty good bang for your buck, not too complex and you can collect up a combiner. Once you experience that, you can judge if you want to go high end or whatever.
On another note, I suggest getting someone who you know the character of (like maybe a First Aid) as that goes a long way to making a toy feel more alive.

It should be said IMMEDIATELY that as actual combiners, the toys from the Combiner Wars line are pretty terrible. On their own they range from poor to decent, but as part of a combiner they're just awful.
If you want something for a combiner, you'll need to invest in third party-issued upgrades, like "Perfect Effect", ranging from either 1 or 2 (in the case of Superion) or a whole handful (Menasor)
Again, this is only if "must combine" is a priority of any sort. If you don't care about combiners then go for it.

New Hands+Feet just so it could stand up, the Torso+Head upgrade just to hold it together, Shoulder locks to keep the shoulders attached when trying to move the arms and a third party Motormaster Rifle just to have a decent weapon.

My recommendations are based on a person wanting to get into the toys in the first place. I was thinking that a single deluxe is probably a decent point to find out if you like toys at all. If you got it and wanted more complexity, we could talk later. I don't think suggesting a masterpiece as a *first* toy isn't a great idea.

They're not, it's their history between each other is what interests people. Drift was this drug addict who lived at Dead End (Basically a meth head). Optimus saved him and Ratchet fixed Drift up, saying "You can do anything, you've been given a second chance to do yourself better!". And then he went off and joined the Decepticons, cue Ratchet getting salty at Drift for doing that. Now that the war is over, Drift wants to be nice to Ratchet while he wants this hippie ass fuckbutt to just stop being a hippie. I do see the shipping potential but I'm not a hard shipper for them. I lean more to Cygate, granted that group can get obnoxious to the point of not even wanting the two to even hook up canonically.

My issue is the writing behind Tailgate and Cyclonus doesn't feel functional in any sense. Tailgate's the twerp who goes around trying to fit in with the cool kids and things just wind up "working" for him. He's more like Cyclonus' pet than anything else, and Cyclonus' behavior just doesn't feel like it switched from "what a pain" to "he's not so bad"

To be fair there is the factor that they are the only two ancient Transformers on the ship.
Looking at Cyclouns and how he shares old Cybertroian songs and traditions with Tailgate makes me think some of their relationship (what ever it is) was born by the relativity of them being from the same point in history. Cyclouns was very shock to discover Tailgate was online less than two weeks and was 4 million+ years blacking out in a cave. But by that point I think the bond set in.

I like Tailgate because he genuinely didn't feel like he didn't fit in. It's understandable because of his situation of being in a semi coma for the last 6 million years. Ya miss alot of stuff. Cyclonus actually stops smacking the mech away and starts giving Tailgate respect because this little shit is the only mech who's actually giving him respect and not treating him as a Decepticon. That's what I liked about the ship in season 1. It felt like they were growing as friends.
And season 2 came along and decided to focus on their relationship as a couple instead of the two being friends....And I think that ruined it a bit for me. The two need to get along first before the home wrecker that is Getaway needs to be a spike in their relationship. Cyclonus can't even say "I care about you" to Tailgate. I dunno. Here's to season 3 focusing on other people instead of the top 5 shipping couples of the Lost Light.

I think it would be fun to include. Plus, it could give the other Protectobots a bit more personality/paneltime. Funny enough, at TFCon last year a number of people asked him to make Rook a character. Sadly, he didn't even know who Rook was (which I give him some leeway on as he's not a G1 character and it was on the spot - everyone's memory can be spotty on the spur of the moment).
