This always annoys me.
It's basically saying any new character is an OC, hell Impactor's been around since 1986 I believe.
It's like saying Animated Bulkhead or Prime Knock Out are OC's. Despite now becoming mainstays in the franchise.
Drift and Rung are kind of like OC's since fans who went legit made them into character but they've since evolved as characters.

The cartoons are made with some amount of care though for the general viewing public. Characters in the comics are written literally the same way an OC would be in a fanfiction, because they know kids aren't reading and that many people in general aren't reading so they feel they have full reign to just indulge in their most retarded headcanons

Redemption arcs for former villains rarely works well in comics. When you've got shit like Magneto basically wanting to be Super Hitler for 40+ years it's hard to swallow when they turn him good, or try to.
Same with Megatron. Guy's a villain. It's a bit ridiculous to forgive a guy who has been harvesting planets for the past 5 million or so years of galactic war.
Not that Getaway is justified in being a dick to everyone else. Not wanting to engage directly in vegeance killing of a surrendered war criminal doesn't mean you deserve to be marooned on a planet with a death squad waiting to buttfuck you with a shotgun.

This is...ok time to throw my two grains of salt.
First off, it makes sense that they would probably have a different design since it's implied that they've been roaming around for a while. So I'm not mad at different designs. I dunno what's up with incorporating the Prime!Ratchet designs his toys/merch nowadays. I can't really complain too much because Ratchet from Prime was one of my favorite characters on that show. But I'm iffy on that design. It's not horrible but it's not as bad as DRIFT.
Drift does NOT look good with a dark gray face. Either light gray or white is good balance for his color palette. Why does anyone think bulky Drift looks good? It doesn't. He's a swordsman, it makes sense that if he uses swords, he's not heavy looking or has a whole lot of kibble on him (i.e. IDW Cyclonus or Windblade) I think it's his legs is what's killing it for me. I like his facial paint he has going on.
I'm not furious because something like this happened to Arcee when she was given new red armor (or body) after Dark Cybertron and her dark gray and pink design was shown off in Combiner Hunters with Windblade. After that, she went back to her original palette. So I'm guessing they're designed like this to do, what else, sell a future line of toys.

There's a general on /toy/, but it can be full of shitposting at times.
For a quick answer:
There are toys at every price range. If you want a pretty decent toy at a reasonable price, try getting a Combiner Wars deluxe-class toy. They're pretty good bang for your buck, not too complex and you can collect up a combiner. Once you experience that, you can judge if you want to go high end or whatever.
On another note, I suggest getting someone who you know the character of (like maybe a First Aid) as that goes a long way to making a toy feel more alive.

It should be said IMMEDIATELY that as actual combiners, the toys from the Combiner Wars line are pretty terrible. On their own they range from poor to decent, but as part of a combiner they're just awful.
If you want something for a combiner, you'll need to invest in third party-issued upgrades, like "Perfect Effect", ranging from either 1 or 2 (in the case of Superion) or a whole handful (Menasor)
Again, this is only if "must combine" is a priority of any sort. If you don't care about combiners then go for it.

My Menasor needed FOUR upgrades before it could have been considered "Decent". New Hands+Feet just so it could stand up, the Torso+Head upgrade just to hold it together, Shoulder locks to keep the shoulders attached when trying to move the arms and a third party Motormaster Rifle just to have a decent weapon.

At most he needs 2 things: PE's support brace that fills out his midsection if thats offensive to your sense, and the PE hands/feet.
It's more then he SHOULD need, but he is the 2nd weakest combiner of the whole line. Shit like Defensor, Bruticus, Superion, UW Devastator, etc, are fine on their own.

My recommendations are based on a person wanting to get into the toys in the first place. I was thinking that a single deluxe is probably a decent point to find out if you like toys at all. If you got it and wanted more complexity, we could talk later. I don't think suggesting a masterpiece as a *first* toy isn't a great idea.
What would you suggest as a better first toy? We're not talking about what is up to collector standards (I agree about you on some of Menasor's issues). Do you think a RID warrior is a better start? a Legion?

Any of the thrilling-30 line or a CW toy that wasn't made to be a combiner is a good place to start.
The Legends-class toys are pretty good no matter what the line, and Ultra Magnus is great if you want to aim high.

It's typical for people in general to overthink about a friendship between two people. I can see the fun in shipping people, maybe digging some hidden intentional subtext between two characters.
BUT christ Cygate and Dratchet shippers can't distinguish the difference in a friendship moment and a gay moment. I don't personally ship Dratchet because I feel like Ratchet is like that uncle/adult trying to be there for his nephew/young adult who's been through some serious shit in his life.
Same thing with Cyclonus and Tailgate, a mentor/student dynamic going on. But I can actually see those two hooking up together at the end of MTMTE.

Moreover, James Roberts' skillful and brave writing allows us to discuss various subjects of crucial importance for child's development, such as gay relationships between robots. If he asks me why the robots don't transform, I will explain to him the symbolic meaning of Megatron choosing not to transform and instead riding a pink scooter on the way to meet his destiny. It is a moment of profound significance that concludes the larger transformation of Megatron from a patriarchal tyrant to a good feminist ally. Starting with his renouncing the fusion cannon, an obvious phalic symbol of toxic masculinity, ending with him renouncing his tank alt-mode, a symbol of death for countless civilizations he has personally vanquished and, in-real life, for countless children of Color, and choosing a pink scooter instead - an obvious symbol for often maligned femininity and progressive, environment-conscious thought.
It is no coincidence that the current antagonist, Getaway, represents the other face of toxic masculinity - that of a PUA MRApist who is backed by good men doing nothing when evil happens because "she deserved it".

Empire of Stone had him be a moody cynical anti-hero, because McCarthy OC DONUT STEEL.

Okay, I went back through the synopses and argued myself in a circle for a while. I think the most probable explanation is that the group is neutral at least within the context of the major war, was working with the Necrobot, and has a plan to both revive some organics and continue their experimental hybrids of mech and organic, with the first beneficial to the second. The Necrobot's goal was not to enable the experiments, but to save some species from becoming extinct. The group discovered his goal and provided him with equipment to continue, provided he donated some of his findings to their experiments.
Although the 'Cons, at least during the war, were letting at least two bigass logo-ships of theirs run loose under the control of some outlier group and for some reason were... not worried about it? I'd be worried about it. It can't have happened entirely postwar either, because of the stage of the experiments. I can't decide if that's a minor or a major hole in the theory.

Actually no, Roberts has said Megatron is a near match for a Phase Sixer but he's not stronger than one. The DJD are specifically designed to take down Phase Sixers without casuality so Megatron would still be in trouble.
Overlord was only beaten by Megatron before he got the ununtrium coating during his training for being a super soldier. By the time of LSOTW Overlord could probably mop the floor with Megatron.

Soundwave knows without speaking to him and Galvatron believes (doesn't care either way) plus all the Decepticons with them witnessed his turning during Dark Cybertron. Every Decepticon present on Cybertron saw the televised rescue attempt by the Seacons and Terrorcons that Megs refused to take. They broadcasted it. DJD missed it being out doing there thing. Deazarus and crew refuses to work under Megatron because he sacrificed too many for no reason. Tarn got them on his side with a different approach (and a threat of death). I think Megatron is played out as a Decepticon as a whole.
