I made these a couple weeks ago, I posted them, got some positive reviews, only bad one was the art style but that's fitting with the story so you guys said.

I was in the process of a move and I'm just about done now, so I can resume this.
I am also glad for once I got to post this at the beginning of the thread...

Oh, and I've begin to set up social media accounts so I can get this out there. I fear the SJWs though.
>>

iirc there are a couple here,
anons making or thinking of making:
childhood memoirs
fantasy sol of two little girls
sol of a loli assassin in skimpy clothes
sol 4koma rpg parody
comedy of a miserable girl and retard friend
>>
Can I ask you guys a favour? I think I'm having some clarity issues. My gf is finding it difficult to understand what's going on in this page.

Pic related would be the next page to tapastic.com/series/carpetcity. Can anyone please just read through that (it's just a few pages) and tell me if this last page makes any sense in context?

Also if you want to insult me for grammar/spelling it wouldn't harm.

Ignore anatomy etc, I'm going to fix those after.

>>
>>81225357
...What IS going on in that page? It seems like weird non-linear worldbuilding stuff about carpet salespeople. I can't read it on Tapastic because I don't have an account, but they're still talking to that guy that tried to rob them, right?
>>
>>81225504
ok, then yes, I do have a problem here.

Pretty much what you guessed; perhaps it's way too nonlinear way too soon.

I didn't realize tapastic was so anal, you can read here too carpetcity.webcomic.ws

Anyways I'll rework this page. I think I can save this with some clever paneling.

>>81224089
well, mine is supposed to become a travel comic with more of a sol vibe than full on adventure.
>>
I want to make a web comic to 1) watch myself improve and 2) get my name out there, but i have not the creativity or drive to make one
>>
>>81225841
Looking for a writer?
>>
>>81225805
Well it seems like pretty clear non-linear worldbuilding stuff. The page works any which way you read it, so I wouldn't say the lack of linearity is a big detractor.
Only real problem is that I keep wanting to read the speech balloons in Sinus' panel, then the panel about the mayor, and then back to Sinus for the caption about his clothes. If you moved teh traditional carpet attire caption up around his head instead so you'd read the whole thing at once, I think that would fix the flow.
>>
>>81225886
yeah kind of.

My art is still sub par so I'm a bit nervous about actively seeking a writer.
>>
>>81225953
What kind of comics were you looking to work on?
Don't worry, writers looking for artists are a lot more common than artists looking for writers because of the comparatively low level of commitment required.

Aside from the obvious anatomy issues (which, honestly, are a lot more pressing than the design issues)

Coat's a little plain. There's no buttons, no cuffs, just a coat that looks like it's made from purple plastic bag material. Some detail in the same pale yellow as the hat's details would work.
The pauldron seems strange and out of place. The orange of the leather looks terrible next to the purple coat, it doesn't make sense as armor because of the tiny coverage, he's not using it as a bandolier to carry anything, and if it's supposed to be decorative it doesn't look very ornate.
The hat is decent, but you've drawn the teeth very 2d. I'm not sure if the central thing is a candle of some sort or a nasal guard.

The undershirt (armor?) looks like he'd stab his throat out if he looked down.

Also some major problems with the basic anatomy:
Don't draw hair like a bunch of lines, but a single shape.
Don't make the back of a character's head concave. The skull is basically a sphere.
>>
>>81230926
thanks for the feedback, mate
Yeah my anatomy is probably awful atm i definately need to focus on that and the design was kind of bugging me as well. His cloak is way too bland for my taste and I need to try to give it more design.
thanks again

>>81221212
i'm not terribly proud of it. i just had to get it out of me, and this is one of only two circuseses in the comic. the other is faggy vampires. but not like the twilight kind, the fruity french kind.
Honestly this little arc isn't working at all, but I had like NO ideas and this is all I could cobble together. I'm desperately thinking of ways to tie it into the upcoming big thingy so it seems less pointles.
>>
I was wondering, what can you do to get into the mood of writing scenes or dialogue for your comics? I recently went to a convention, and asked some of the writers there for tips. One said to just try out scenes and see what works. Another said she was excited about her writing, and that it helps if you are excited about writing for your characters and where they will take you in the story.

I'm wondering if theres anything else I could do to get the writing juices flowing. I have plenty of ideas for scenes and characters. And I am pretty happy when I get inspiration and write it down. So if anyone else has some good tips for me. I would love to hear them.
>>
>>81232885

loving that improved shoulder anatomy on the nudes. Now look at the one wearing a shirt. see how the armpits of the shirt go up too high, and are too angular? think about the shoulder underneath when you draw the shirt.
>>
>>81229320
>how to incorporate him
what kind of duties does he have? when i heard lackey for deity he's in love with, I thought Pit immediately. in any case, whatever his duties are, that will tell you how to story.
>>
Doing something kind of experimental with Ennui GO! today. We'll see if it works.
>>
>>81232997
By improving the same as everyone else, except slower. So slow you don't notice it. I don't notice it either, til I feel like getting lazy and copying old art, and realize I can't because I made some ridiculous mistakes back then I'd never make now (sometimes I recycle it anyway and just fix it)
In each area, I have no idea how I improved, no idea how I need to improve now, no idea how to induce it. but it just does improve on its own... very slowly.
as for motivation.. fuck, if I stopped drawing them, they'd stop living! can't have that. Pretty much the only thing I have going for my life, the only thing that'd be missed if I died.

>>
>>81227051
I'd drop the black outlines on the mossy bits to dark green, and increase the contrast of the shading on the letters.

I think the lettering area could do with being higher contrast overall, and the moss a little desaturated. I'm not entirely sure about that left-hand dangling root either...
>>
>>81235043
feels like im on the right track then
>>81235121
also, you

>>
>>81235220
The moss is already outlined dark green, but I guess I should lighten it a tad if it's being seen as black, haha.

For the lettering area, do you mean the letters themselves or te red paint behind it? I've had another person tell me it could be a bit more saturated.

I kinda like the root myself, but I might shorten it, maybe put a couple more down there, just so it's not drawing too much attention.
>>
>>81235242
That's good to know. Then I just hopefully made the fraction of people who get it a little higher.
>>
>>81235981
i'd keep the red as-is, it's perfect. more saturation would be blinding
but the green could use a touch more saturation and definitely more contrast with the darker shading green
>>
>>81235981
>do you mean the letters themselves or te red paint behind it?
A little bit of both. Try darkening the red paint a little, and boosting the contrast of the shading on the lettering.

The dangling slime droplet seems to be hanging at a slight angle instead of true vertical.

>Mood/Tone
The idea is that The Sisters is supposed to feel sorta like an 80s movie at its bet, and like some CW bullshit at its worst. Tone-wise, something that gets more serious as it goes on while still trying to pretend that everything is slice of life. I'd say we want to be more Fright Night than Roger Corman, but there's nothing wrong with Corman at times. Ideally we want things to feel grounded in character logic, so leaps and jumps make sense for those within the world but seem like bad ideas to us as readers.
>Target Demographic
Honestly, I just wanted something I could appreciate myself. A lot of urban fantasy goes too gonzo too quick; and almost all of it ignores its Americana roots in noir. So we opted to make it a little more Brick than Maltese Falcon, and avoid elves, vamps and shit; as well as any paranormal investigations proper. We do have a large trans audience apparently, and ideally we want the teen-to-young adult crowd without having to appeal directly to them in a derivative fashion.

>>81224089
Slice of life is an interesting genre, and those are my favorite parts to write. Unfortunately they're the least interesting parts to get drawn. When we get to do those parts, I try to center them around familial disharmony, class differences within a group, and cowardice being the way to a safe but rarely easy life. Plus secrets.

>>81232976
>Writing scenes/dialogue.
I watch TV for interesting dynamics and I frankly just enjoy conversations. I also get into weird fucking situations, so that helps with scenes. I'd say remember body language and most people don't state the whole of why they think something, they just think it---why is often shown through action and repetitive behavior.

And always rewrite your scenes after you read them aloud a few times. And maybe have someone else look at them too.

Honestly, once you have dynamics down; making them interact in an interesting way is the fun part.

He's supposed to be a stressed businessman that acts like he owns the world. He can't stand being at the bottom, and lashes out at authority. He's put in charge of a dying company essentially as a fall guy while the other, smarter people jumped ship before they were dragged down with it.

that sounds really interesting. he acts like he owns the world, yet he's at the bottom? but he's in charge?
anyway it'll be pretty interesting to see how this goes. and the art's nice, though I'd raise his cranium higher. It's never good if your face is bigger than your braincase.
>>
>>81251136
plus with more forehead room his eyebrows could actually raise in surprise without smacking into his horns. i used to really hate forehead horns but they're totally growing on me. better than temple-mounted horns anyway. actually even WITHIN the on-the-top placement category i can never decide whether I like them on the front corners of the cranium or the rear, or in between..
>>
>>81240097
my friend says you should make her point the computer in the last panel with the same face, as if asking her mom wtf is on the computer
>>
>>81251136

>he acts like he owns the world, yet he's at the bottom? but he's in charge?

He works hard which is why he's noticed at all, but he's thick headed. The former boss, a succubus, even explained to him in plain English that he was essentially going to be a fall guy.

She knows all too well that all it takes with him is the idea of power, and something to prove.

The thing to understand is that villains live in a neutered world because they got rich and lazy -- This guy's lust for corporate power is just compensation for his lack of proficiency in being an actual demon, and doing demon things. All of it driven home by the way he was raised, and how he always felt inadequate even from a young age.

I currently started to resume
I am thinking of changing art style since the only negative criticism I got was on that
here was something I was working on but I scrapped it 'cause it hit too close to home
I actually did this when heavily intoxicated but it was too close to a self insert that yeah, fuck it

do i continue with the shitty mouse to ms paint and get carpal tunnel? I can show some of my sketches and how I can better art but this just seems fitting

eh, i got oblivon and a bunch of awesome mods and got distracted from drawing for a few days, doing some fan art for uknown lands cuz its the artists birthday today

hopefully this is a warm up and i will keep drawing after this

hopefully my videogame addiction wont get me lost in video games for the rest of the week when i should be drawing non stop until my hands fall off

but i will probably just watch netflix and start playing my modded to hell version of oblivion which is giving me tons of nostalgia highs instead of drawing more stuff after this, fuck my life

>>
>>81265784
>Doctor Who fan comic
No.
>>
>>81267677
I think that's the problem, the ideas I've came up with rely on the story being longer, there is a twist with the 'foe' and what goes into their motivations.

I should come up with something high concept and like Midnight or Blink.

another one i was thinking of was 'The Lovecraftian Zoo' a secret facility where they keep dangerous beings that seem out of place in the universe, similar to the boneless from Flatline.
The trouble is that I might up with too many monsters to worry about.
>>
>>81267872
no such thing as too many monsters. when you're writing in a larger setting like that, it takes care of them.
>>
What you guys reommend for someone trying to get better at drawing. I know it's a broad question but just in general what kind of tips can be shared?
Basically just draw, draw, and then draw some more?
>>
>>81268749
pay attention to the shapes you're making. but even if you can't, draw those shapes a lot. part of you is paying attention (brainstem i think?)
try doing things from other angles a lot. imagine holding the thing in your hand. i can't tell you how many times i've been like "no.. this needs to be a straight line at this angle,... right?" and then turned it over a few times mentally and finally realized 'nope. curved. it's a dome cut in half, so even though that cut in half line is straight when viewed head on, it's a curve from this angle because it's a curved dome'

>>
>>81268749
If you can draw simple shapes well, you can draw anything well.

Always use reference when you can.

Focus on improving just one thing at a time.

Always remember to find out how to make studies interesting and fun. When at all possible, find a way to apply the thing you want to learn to the thing you would draw for fun, rather than the other way around.

For learning perspective, learn how to draw a box in perspective and then learn how to turn that box into the thing you're trying to draw.

Still trying to rustle up the discipline to stop and draw strips again. Posted a first draft of this the other week. Here's a progress update:

Tightened up the pencils. Had the idea of turning part of the titlebar into the guy's thoughtbubble.

Any seriously wrong with the perspective in panel 1? Is the table the right size or is he 12 feet tall and sitting in a hole? I thought about swapping the standing and sitting exhibitors next to him, so there would be a line from his face to the furries. Feedback appreciated.
>>
>>81272388
hey nice perspective man. this is good stuff
but I think they are definitely much higher than him (as they should be, them standing and him sitting) in the first panel but then by the 3rd and 4th they're his same height
>>
>>81272482
Sounds like something to fix; I tried to show him standing up in panel 2, so 3 and 4 are okay. Now that I look at panel 1, he does seem to be a little larger than he should be (maybe it's the sze of his head?).
Thanks for spotting that.
>>
>>81272653
well i mean, look at the height of the table. his visible upper body is higher than that. but it should be, it'd be weird if you were any shorter than that. what you wanna do is LOWER the table in panel 3 and 4 (see how it's up at their elbow level)
still, honestly youre getting close to overthinking.. something nobody is gonna notice.
>>
>>81272711
That IS easier... fixed now!

>>
>>81272904
now i mean.. in panel 1, the table height is also kind of high, it seems to go up to their waists. but.. some of that is short cartoon legs. so don't worry too much about it.
i will say it's a little odd how the furries seem to have big heads in the first panel, but later their heads are relatively small. so i dunno if those are the 'big mascot head' furries or not.

Panel 1 doesn't seem too bad. Even if comic guy doesn't have cartoonishly short legs like the furries, he's not outrageously tall (like half a head taller than them), though the table seems pretty tall in comparison to the furries. Maybe they're just short.
If anything bothers me, it's probably how the top of the fursuit's snouts and heads are visible, despite being above the horizon.
Panels 3 and 4 do have a perspective problem. If the viewer is at the height of the table, you should be able to see the underside of the characters and comics guy should be lower because he's farther away, but if the viewpoint is at the height of their eyes, the table surface should be visible.
The last panel feels really flat for the same reason - if we're below the table top, his hands should be obscured, if we're above it, the surface should be visible. Being exactly at that height feels really awkward.
>>
>>81273553
>Being exactly at that height feels really awkward.

might want to change the wording from "is that you thomas?" to just "t-tomas?" it conveys the same meaning but the stutter shows surprise/nervousness and the informal question shows the kid considered them close and casual

also the last panel the tomas' pose in the flashback is a bit wonky, and his ear as a ghost is causing a tangent with the panel, might want to just have both ears protrude the borders

hitting 'prev' from the main page goes to the 'undefined' url, which is the same as the 'comic' url you get to when you click archives.
prev seems to work fine on the past pages, but on those past pages, hitting 'today' takes you to that same 'undefined' archive page but with more junk in the URL
looks like you have some sorting out to do
>>
>>81277680
I have to allow scripts on your site to properly read it, which in my book is a major strike against it. A webcomic doesn't need scripts in order to be properly read.
>>
>>81278105
Its an issue with the coding, I think. There are very few comic templates for squarespace out there to choose from.

I have no experience in coding so I just linked "Prev" to the archive because it was originally providing an error page. This was just a jury rig solution.

>>81288514
not much experience i'm afraid, but I know a thing or two.. for one thing, plushes are never cost-effective. unless you're HUGE you won't be able to get someone to want them enough to pay what they cost
posters are cheap, but again you have to get someone to REALLY like your comic before they're gonna be into the idea of buying one. you can, however, sell arts and prints at a medium-high popularity level finding a good printer is another thing entirely.
places that print merch for you do tend to have mugs but i can't imagine why. do people want those? i dunno. i always wished i could get my art printed on folders. folders are great! you can put other art in them.
But for the most cost-effective stuff you go with stickers, keychains, buttons. Those you can get a decent deal on and hand them out and people will actually kinda enjoy them.

Oh shit I just woke up and my eyes are all crusty and took me a while to notice you played around with a couple of styles. It's nice to have that wide range and able to do that sometimes. I'm working on it.
I'm a fan, tell me where I can read more.

>>81290244
Honestly, what the guy said about cockroaches would be a little too much detail, but the one thing that bothered me, (I struggle with title/logos and background a lot, oh and coloring) would be that the word Urchin has too many jagged edges, like you dragged your pen up and down a lot. Maybe smooth out the edges? That's just me and don't listen to me though. I do enjoy the title and if ever I want a title I'll go to you. (Or try to learn myself)

Speaking of learning, where the fuck can I learn to color?
My entire life I've had the pen to paper even in class, where I would flunk classes for not paying attention 'cause I was drawing. 25 now and I never colored for jack.

Ah, coffee is made.
The extent of my coloring for a drawfag thing.
I present to you MSpaint and 10 minutes.
>>
>>81293727
Fuck, I forgot this.
This is the style I aim for when I get better.
What kind of pen did you use?
You've given me inspiration to ditch the digital.
>>
>>81289534
Sweet.
Good luck.

I got a weird idea the other day. I have a lot of story ideas in my head, all for different comics. Well, I though of ways that I could link the comics together so the readers know they take place in the same universe.
Is this too much of a stretch? (I know im getting really ahead of myself but I like to plan out my stories)
>>
>>81295729
Make sure you don't accidentally limit your stories by doing so. For example, if in one story the protagonist is a wizard, everyone will expect magic to work the same in all the other comics as it does in his and will feel cheated if it doesn't. Or someone might wonder why the protagonist from comic X doesn't show up in comic Y to help save the day, when the story works much better if the protagonist of Y works alone. It might also rob the story of oomph if there's a big enough scale difference - like, sure, Y's sister has been kidnapped by vampires, but who even cares about that when X is saving the entire universe from Cthulhu monsters at the same time?

That said, it's not like you can't do it, just consider the costs and benefits of having all your stories take place in the same universe.
>>
Bump. I gotta wtch this when I get home.
>>
anyone care to share their be all end all lessons/links on perspective?
>>
>>81295965
Yeah I know what you mean.
What I have planned is that the end of some stuff will tie in by giving hints to the next story. I only plan on having a handful of characters actually cross with other storylines.
But I see how having that can be a big mess it I set myself up for it

You saw this one, right?

As for your image, it really should have had a third vanishing point.
Check out the chapter in the pdf starting on pg 105, it'll show you how to keep things like the center stripes in the road and the divisions in your sidewalk looking consistently sized.

i think your issue is how... complex your art is. this normally isn't a bad thing but given your work i think you need to cut back on some details.
>>
>>81293892
I've always been good at newspaper comic styles. I don't LIKE them, but they're so easy to me. Just a lot of symbols to memorize, which my robotic-ass brain loves. my comic was originally intentionally made of symbols in the same way, mimicking sprite comics. then over time tried to branch out
>tell me where I can read more.
prepare for disappointment! http://kiwidayn.comicgenesis.com
>>
>>81293892
well I was thinking powerpuff girl style cockroaches, just an oval with a T on the back and two antennae, and maybe tiny stick legs poking out if even that.
I think the jagged edges of the lettering are meant to evoke a 'paintbrush on wood' look
>>
>>81295965
This is very good advice
HOWEVER
I think shared universes can work VERY well with 'tiers' as it were. nobody wonders why spider-man never/rarely showed up to fight dormammu, because that's dr strange's territory. in my comic, wizards handle cosmic shit. powerful superheroes handle big monster shit. regular martial artists handle thieves and thugs. nobody really expects them to intrude on each others' rackets

i will make up for it on the next page which will be beyond amazing to make up for how bad this page is

ok im gone now, peace
>>
>>81303439
I think it's fine. the only problem is how the letters run together quite so much. darkening the shading on the letters further would help with that. or even just a few dark scratchy lines at the edges where they touch.
but up close it's fine. it's only vague at a distance

man /co/ is fast today

"Yes, you have to file those TPS reports. If you don't do it this year, we can't do them next year. And they've got to be done."
"No, we can't just get an intern to do it."
-
"Just because I don't wear a tie, doesn't mean you get to wear whatever tie you want. I don't care if you got that singing tuna-fish tie for Secret Santa; it isn't proper work attire."
"NO, casual Friday does not mean Hawaiian shirts and cargo pants. It means you don't have to color coordinate your pocket square. If someone came in here right now, they'd look at you and think we're a Parrothead Convention rather than A LEGITIMATE CORPORATE ENTITY."

Next week, we start "The Truth", which takes place 45 to an hour after these pages. Like, an hour and fifteen minutes tops.

Character design for a short film. Is there anything I could improve on? I know the arms are a bit long and in a weird position, this is kinda a "t-pose"-type thing

A little info:
Short film takes place millennia in the future
The character is an immortal warrior spurred on by his undying desire to get his copy of Mario Galaxy back from a girl he lent it to in high school (who has now become the immortal god-empress of the world)
Right arm is a wooden mechanical arm, spins like a drill and can shoot out on a chain
Right leg is also mecha but it doesn't really do anything cool
>>
>>81311490
His head is so big it could get really awkward to pose him for action scenes without cheating. Like, he can't get his elbow above his head.
>>
>>81311299
HOLD UP LIL HOMIE.
That's kind of cool to see you do things different than me. I see the empirical evidence before my dick.
I normally always start with dialogue then draw, but my style's a little off. I feel when I write then draw, I can really draw the emotion.
Also that's my ex gf's routine. Are you fucking my ex gf?

the punchline could use a liiitttle work. i couldnt read it til i enlarged it, so i almost thought she was saying 'why must you trample on my dreams'
i suppose 'no of course not, that would be stupid...' is a little too cliche

i had to look up the einherjar to get that part, though the joke works even if you don't. though it is an odd situation, the premise of joining the valkyries to escort the honored dead to the place of fighting and shit, and thinking you were going to be joining in on that fighting.. i almost expect a little tiny word balloon like "i thought they'd invite me afterwards.."
>>
>>81311490
huh. very WindWakery. I'd still play around with the proportions a bit more, right now it's weird how most of the body is pretty well in proportion except suddenly tinylegs. like in other words, it's weird if your legs are the same length as your torso, you know? like you cant pull your knees up to your chest because they wouldn't go up high enough. thinking about poses is the best way to think about proportions and make sure they don't get TOO out of hand

the mechanical arm.. is pretty awesome, but i'd change the part that's just a ribbed tube.
his hair's kind of interesting.. with the flippy-out side bits and his general facial shape, it reminds me of Miss Hathaway from Beverly Hillbillies.. I feel like if you modified his hairline shape a bit and tweaked the sides, it'd be a lot more masculine, and really show off that awesome forelock and ponytail he's rocking.

anyway i like that plot, a lot.
and not that he's wearing the same outfit he wore when he lost his limbs i assume, but it's a bit odd that it's taken battle damage on his OTHER side.
