the writer of my comic said that axel looks to similar to the protag so I redesigned him.

I'm attempting to design backgrounds with sketchup to help me make them look better, and more planned out.

also to the topic.3 months, after that I would probably forget about it.

I reckon he should say 'i COME FROM a family' rather than i have a family.

you know, you did a passable job on the anti-tank rifle in panel 3, it really deserves a redo in panel 4. make yourself a sketch layer or something, with one straight line on it that you use as the guide. then try making other lines that converge and diverge to use as guides for the perspective. that gun deserves better, you drew it so recognizably after all.

You have to remember that comics is a visual medium. It’s not about telling, but about showing. In addition to facial expressions, it’s important to know body language. How a character presents himself is largely part of whether or not your readers will take the character to be real. If a character is cheerful, show them walking upright and smiling. If a character is grumpy, have them slouch and give them a frown.

Ah, you'd think i'd be more careful about cutting myself on that EDGE. Srsly, I have been working on this page forever and I am tired all the time. If only i didn't need money for my crippling addiction to food.

Also I should probably put the comic link in the watermark when I am done
>>
>>81073724
are you serious? they weren't rude at all. it's a valid comment. lots of people have problems with anatomy - there's also lots of artists who still need to work on their foundations. it's not really an insult - more like a "you are here."
>>
>>81073743

just saying, there are more constructive criticisms than ''I would love this with better artwork''

I mean people are doing the best their can, so its kind of shitty to focus on the parts in which they are lacking
>>
>>81074272
maybe i didnt phrase it the best, but as i mentioned before i believe i've talked with this artist before and showed a lot of interest in it. and they in turn showed interest in improving, so i was basically asking how that process is going

This week on the Sisters: Bad times.

Tapastic is having system errors.
Next week: Last update of this issue. The Lies was a short one, meant to lead directly into The Truth on the act break that is next week.

Violence deep down in the worst of them will take root.

>>81060595
>Unannounced Hiatus
I'll give it two weeks without contact. Sometimes things happen, but people like to talk about themselves nowadays; and charity can easily come from viewers if you've got bad news to spill.

So two weeks without notice before I sort of forget about it. But it doesn't take me any issue to keep something in a favorites folder, so it isn't like I can't resume at some point.

>>81074116
Edge can be fun when used sparingly.

>>81072066
Those 100 pages are intangible if not given form. You could be a great actor, but if you don't get up on the stage it's all just potential. Theoretical. You can do it.

Also I'd advise doing it sooner rather than later, because you'll grow to want to fix things you've written once you see how people look at your work.
>>
>>81074673
>Tapastic is having system errors.

those faces in panel 6 are goddamn priceless. what is erin's problem anyway. I mean, what is, like, 40 percent or so of her problem. The rest I get.
That last bit though. fucking nice. she's a great actress. I appreciate it when a story doesn't have to resort to bad acting for us to understand lying is happening.

>What is Erin's Problem.
By Erin's reckoning, Beatrice had their youngest sister break into her boyfriend's house with her friends to steal something. Which is super illegal and looks really bad when you're a school teacher; not to mention when it is your boyfriend they robbed.

She's also not very happy with Beatrice stripping; way way way back in issue 1, Erin asks her if she can pick up booze when she's done with whatever it is she's doing; and at the end Erin suspects Beatrice is either dealing drugs or fucking people for money. They don't have a lot of communication going on between them.

There's also on some level the fear that it is probably true. She probably wouldn't have read it all if Jam didn't point out that they've known Connor for like, three weeks. Spring break, week of the funeral, and now this week. So like, barely three weeks. And Erin's spent a lot of time with him.

And Erin's been alone for a bit. The last guy she was with was Handsome Dan, and she punched him in the dick. And before that it was Scott, because he thought it was a pre-op situation. And before that it was someone else who will crop up later.

And it isn't like her siblings respect her, or anyone in the society really seems to like her. She's very isolated and busy.

So there's certainly a lot of anger that they're trying to poison her one vice away from being a young woman forced to be the head of a family far before her time. Her one vice that isn't alcohol.

It is really the whole felony part and Beatrice doing something violent and stupid that ruins things that pisses her off. It is part of their nature, and the fact that now Jam's getting poisoned by it is really bad.

Beatrice's bad nature is really only established in a Jam context, namely with Beatrice blowing off Jam's concerns a lot, and having Jam kill something and then not explaining it; and then stealing their car while they were at a wake.

Erin's in a bad place. She really needs the lie.
>>
>>81075140
yeah if i thought someone was drugging or whoring, i'd be relieved they were stripping. baffled that anyone would pay to see that but whatever.
>fear she's probably right
aahhh yes! that's a good point. that shit has turned me into a yelling asshole more than once.

>>
>>81074095
is this someone false flagging the artist? or does this retard seriously post here?
>>
>>81075225
Oh I meant, she needed the lie in the context that she really didn't want to believe what's going on. It'd have been nicer to just have things be as they are, because it beats the return to status quo where she's got nothing but a stripper for a sister and a kid in high school who won't give her any respect.

>relieved that they were stripping.
It'll make more sense once we're given context as to who their parents were with them; but they were really supposed to live up to their potential. Erin's the closest thing to that and she's a failure, stuck teaching at public school and hoping she gets tenure.

Beatrice strips, hangs out with a cop, and Craig who runs a gym and does A/V stuff on the side to support his ghosthunting hobby, and dropped out of college. Which we'll get into more later.

Jam's a C+ student, with those marks hung up on the fridge.

They could be a lot more than what they are, and the fact that they're not is something important. And not something more in a "super magical hero" sense, but in a burdened by life sense. Erin can't flourish because she has to be the "mom", and Beatrice made mistakes she can't unmake and hasn't recovered; Jam is new and she might learn better. She's already learned magic isn't fun and games like she thought; and that she is a danger to her friends.

But human beings figure things out, and they either adapt or die.

Erin lying to Conrad is her starting to live up to her potential, but that's something you'll see in time. Which is funny, because we actually have those pages done. But those are for next week.

>>81075343
I'd change panel 1 to: "Who cares! Unless you've got some proof of your epic heroism, I'm out of here." Or something like that. Little less wordy, but I'm one to talk.
>>
>>81075459
oh yeah i forgot about their cultist parents. they did seem a bit higher class didnt they, the type who would have expectations.

Yeah, there's that sort of bottom barrel aspect to them. But their parents did own a beach house, and property, and a Winnebago. They were a bit upper crust in their own sordid way.

These are things that'll come to the forefront eventually. But I can see how there's a trailer trash aspect to them; but it's mostly from the broken home, alcoholism, lies and deceit; rather than finances. Though Erin's making dick as a teacher and owning that house isn't helping her taxes; neither are her legal guardian responsibilities to Jam. It's not an ideal situation.

Thank you for your interest mate, always fun to talk about this stuff we haven't gotten to bring forward yet.

Peanuts! I'm honored... Adelaide is definitely Lucy inspired. Also it is - that comic is a 'prequel' to the Star Valley/2008 stuff so I could figure out how to write Oliver.

You had my interest, now you've got my curiosity. Getting a "Brick" vibe given the setting and the characters we've seen elsewhere. Between LmlaA and 2008, I'm interested in how this will hit that genre. I wish you luck there.

Also, where would Star Valley take place chronologically? Is Oliver an adult hanging out with high schoolers?

lmlaa takes place June 2007, Star Valley takes place summer 2008. Bryson and Adelaide are middle schoolers about to begin high school, Marsha, Bryson's sister, is about to start her senior year. Oliver is 20.

Adelaide and Bryson find Oliver in a dumpster, beat up, fishy, and unable to recall anything before June 2007. Adelaide lets him borrow her cellphone and he calls Luke, who hands the phone off to an Oliver who tells him not to call back again. Since he's been replaced and disfigured, Oliver has no option but to become the secret charge of Adelaide and Bryson until they can figure out who has taken his place and why... which ends up unraveling into a decades old conspiracy involving a dead mall and the city's most beloved landmark: The Magic Seas.

I know it's holding me back from putting my stuff out there, but I feel I should soley improve on my fundamentals before creating a comic. I lurk these threads a lot to see what you guys are working on and I'm always very impressed how you don't think about "Am I good enough?" and just draw. You guys are my main inspiration and motivation to keep going. Stay awesome and produce more comics, /hyw/! One day I'll join your ranks.
>>
>>81084597
>you don't think about "Am I good enough?" and just draw.
You'd be surprised. Those sort of thoughts kept me down for years.
This is just an anecdote, but I feel that I've improved more in the two years since I managed to mostly get over that question and get off my ass, art-wise than I did in the five before that.
"Am I good enough" can easily turn into a distraction or an excuse to avoid going outside of your comfort zone.
Do you really think it would slow your progress to try implementing those fundamentals you're trying to improve in a comics context as you're learning?
>>
>>81084597
It took me years of before I made and posted a comic on here. I've been talking about my webcomic in art threads here since 2011 and about to launch it in 2016 because I finally feel like I'm competent enough to draw it.

Webcomics have a ridiculously low bar for entry. Just look at Dewd's early stuff. There's no way you're worse than him.
>>
>>81085101
> to avoid going outside of your comfort zone.
So you think you build a habit of having anatomy studies and life drawings (for example) be your comfort zone? I always felt I really had to get out there and deliberately practice this stuff. I always felt comics, as I drew them, where in my comfort zone.

>slow your progress to try implementing those fundamentals you're trying to improve in a comics
No, I don't think so, but I have a job and thus not much time. Regularily drawing pages is one thing, pages and studies another. Maybe I could combine it, no I most certainly could - but I'd like to be able to do rather quick drawings. It helps a lot if you can sketch a character pose in 2 minutes instead of 20. And I was spending that much time on single poses in single panels. (And that was just the underlying sketch!)
So yeah, I rather produce another few hundret shitty drawings before I work at my comic. I also miss a lot of the conceptual design, especially enviromental design, that's why I'm studying landscapes and wilderness at the moment.

>>81085384
Out of interest - who are you?

>>81089137
Does it matter? Maybe I'm better, maybe I'm worse. Another comic's quality should NEVER be your reason to post or not post your work, because there will always be people ahead of you as well as behind you. (Also you're being rude to the Dewd. Please draw a quick sketch of Annabeth for mas- compensation!)
>>
>>81089137
Just because the bar is low doesn't mean you should settle for less than the best you can do
>>
>>81087492
i like it. kind of a princess zelda virgin mary look. is that a toe ring?
>>
>>81089975
>Another comic's quality should NEVER be your reason to post
I used a combination of spritecomics and megatokyo to convince me i could do a comic
I've had a major issue in most of my life underestimating how easy things are and choosing to keep my expression to myself. if i had had more confidence i'd be a huge letsplayer making all the money right now.
>>
>>81089975
>So you think you build a habit of having anatomy studies and life drawings (for example) be your comfort zone
Differen't anon, but yeah. Practice/study is a potential comfort zone for me.
There's nothing at stake when I practice and it is something I should be doing, too, so I can feel good about it.
>>
>>81089975
>So you think you build a habit of having anatomy studies and life drawings (for example) be your comfort zone?
Well, once you're in the habit of it doing that, you can avoid a lot of unpleasant feelings (fear of failure, having to learn new skills like page composition or lettering) by never actually getting started on your comic proper and just studying and studying subjects you're already used to studying.
If you're putting out pages regularly, that tends to leave you with a much better idea of what needs to improve (and IME, it's much better motivation because you have more concrete goals - it's one thing to draw a bunch of hands because hands are hard and you know abstractly that you need to be good at them, it's another to draw a bunch of hands because this page needs a close-up of someone picking up a rock or it won't work in the story).

Yeah, it's a toe ring(s). Apparently they found a viking age priestess or witch wearing 'em in her grave, although nobody's sure of the significance.
Zelda and Mary, eh? Not quite what I'm going for. Maybe add some more witchy accessories like pouches or some little animal bones with runes on 'em.

Should I make the white face makeup more obvious? I want her to look a little ominous and imposing, but I don't want everybody thinking "why's KISS suddenly in this viking comic"?

... i'm sorry man but that sounds like what happens when lower-end superhero cartoons want sports-celebrities to guest star, and make out that theyre secret superheroes with sports-themed powers. can you walk me through how this works maybe? Exactly how do they fight crime? with motorcycles? Why do they think they're qualified? is this one of the reasons they were inducted so quickly into the team? how does the REST of the team juggle those two tasks?
I mean I love the 80s but 'have motorcycle and good at riding it' doesnt quite work anymore as a crimefighting theme. Maybe if it had a bunch of gadgets, but then i'm just imagining "oh no, they went inside a building" Nightboat shenanigans

Yeah, I know. Honestly I'm struggling beyond "hey, I wanna do something about 80's motorcycle racing".
Alternatively, I might do a story similar to Talledega Nights, where you have two idiots that out of nowhere get good at racing and have to cope with suddenly becoming superstars
>>

and it can still be an elite team if you want, i could actually see that. and they do races on the side. that's a bit more plausible I think. they might even have secret government funding

This took a FUCKTON to tome to ink because of how cluttered the house is... I'm mostly happy with how it came out since I hadn't really drawn a house's interior for more than a couple of panels since chapter 1.

>How long can an unannounced hiatus can last before you drop the comic?

I guess about two months... but seriously, why do an "unannounced hiatus" at all? Everyone always has access to the internet nowadays, there's NO REASON why you couldn't warn your audience and perhaps give a time estimate for the hiatus

Great, I had to slow down my comic production in the past month because I had to focus on work, but it paid off in the end and now I'm getting back to my regular pace. That also gave me time to think on the direction I want to take it; since I definitely want to take a break from "monster of the week" after this arc

Also, caught up with The Sister's recently (Finished "The Secrets"). Jam's and her group of friends are definitely my favorite part., I feel they complement each-other's personalities. >Have everything plotted out for a webcomic
>Have decent drawing skills, enough that you believe nobody is gonna shit on you for your skills
>Have the characters designs down, and have actual personalities.
>Everything is planned out completely, except for how to actually start the story
Goddammit I really hate this. Does anyone else feel like this is a problem for them?
I'd love to just start it off with random slice of life shit but it wouldn't work out with the comic I'm planning
>>
>>81101210
>have very rough skeleton for story, missing a few bones but whatever
>have mediocre drawing skills, enough that plenty of people are gonna shit on me
>have designs down for a few of the characters, everyone else will be filled in eventually
>""""most"""" things are planned out
>know exactly where to start
>>
>>81101210
starts can be tough for several reasons. fear of commitment, not wanting to make a mistake with lasting consequences, hoping you don't forget something or (gasp) think of a better starting point later..
if you really think you cant just start in medias res (not everyone can) and go back and do the flashback later, then why don't you tell us a little about it, and we can suggest a beginning.

That's a pretty sweet interior for realz. Maybe a little more ostentatious than I'd expect from a simple fisherman and his wife, living alone?
It's probably good for Gwyn to learn all the effort that goes into making bread from scratch, seeing as she's used to just taking food as tribute from the humans.

>is she wearing a wig anyhow or is this for some flashback scene?
Well, not exactly either but kind of both. An explanation you didn't consider is that she grew her hair out in between chapters. But this is completely not the case

>you must be SUPER-DUPER exited to finally introduce the rest of the cast
Well, this next chapter does introduce some new characters, but a lot of the ones I like are pretty much just background characters that don't get any speaking lines for a long while yet, if ever (my original idea for Carrion Girls was a lot more slice-of-life comedy and much of the cast, like most everyone in pic related, don't have much of a place in the current version except as recurring extras. Hopefully they'll get a chance to shine in the half-page intermissions and omake stuff.). I think I have, like, three characters total show up that are gonna be important to the actual overarching story in this chapter.

>>81095455
Nah, nah, this one doesn't need to be in valkyrie colors. I'm gonna want to keep a lot of blue in there for reasons, but I was thinking of having earthy tones or maybe even black instead of white to contrast better with Skeggöld's usual uniform.
>>
>>81102013
Where's the bitch with the long nose?
>>
>>81102013
lookin forward to rota and even moreso to skogul.

when i hear witchy robes, i instantly think dull earthy clay colors. as if like, 'even brown is too lively'
>>
>>81102255
Skalmöld's not on that chart because it's one I made to keep track of the minor characters. Not a place to put the deuteragonist.

>>81102277
Skögul's actually got a super important (if incredibly minor) role in the next chapter.

I feel you on the witch, but I don't want to make it too dull - A, because it's a fairly high-class witch's outfit, like one who the community trusts with their supernatural shenanigan deterrents, and B, because the scene's already got a lot of brown in it.
>>
>>81102656
righto. i feel like an important respected witch would be the one in glossy black robes. but that's viewed through modern eyes.
what youve chosen here though, this works. i dig it.
>>
>>81103208
Nah, I think "glossy black" would be more than just high class to vikings, it'd be a king's personal magic advisor or something. Good black dye that didn't smear all over was super expensive for a long time, comparable to imported silks (actually a lot of reenactor's guides and archaeological studies I can find claim that black just wasn't a color clothes could have at the time - but if nothing else, wouldn't you be able to just find some naturally black sheep and take their wool? Maybe they were just talking about on more expensive fabrics like linen).
>>
>>81104207
interesting. they had trouble getting black yet blue was no problem. it's neat how that kinda thing varies depending on place and time

I really think you'd benefit from redoing the fourth panel with proper care to perspective, Dewd. The bendy stuff is making it lose a lot of impact.
>>
>>81105899
Oh, I accidentally miscounted my panels when I was doing the line art, I thought the fifth panel was the forth, whoops.

But yeah, there's now way I can fix that now, that took the better hour of my evening to draw that, maybe someday when I draw a gun again.

Well, not "no problem" - blue was made with woad, which IIRC wasn't domesticated at the time in Scandinavia and didn't grow wild in a lot of places. There's no shortage of it in the archaeology (usually from people buried in their sunday best, mind you), but it seems to have been a fairly expensive color, which might be why Odin's described as wearing a blue cloak (the reason I made it the main color of the valkyrie uniform).

I probably shouldn't be up discussing viking age dyeing techniques at this hour. Have a something with Róta. She's not good at humans.

Don't start your comic yet, man. Buy a big sketch book and fill it to the brim with drawings first. If you're happy with what you see by the end of it, start your comic. If not, buy another and start again. You'll get there one day if you keep practicing. I'd also suggest doing lots of tracing and sketching other art styles you like. It'll really help you to develop your own style.

>Maybe a little more ostentatious than I'd expect from a simple fisherman and his wife, living alone?

That'll sort of be explained in the next page; The fisherman actually think VERY highly of himself and his family history; Lore-wise the people who live around that region tend to BELIEVE they're all decedents of the fairy nobility intermarrying with native humans before those had discovered iron. He even dresses in a similar fashion as the Dullahan's clan (though those clothes are just based on medieval Irish clothing)

Hope Thögh is one of the three you mentioned, she's q.t.

Is it socially acceptable to have your comic hosted on multiple sites?
>>
>>81120206

>>
>>81120687
why would these sites have a 'crowd'
you can access them all on the same computers
>>
>>81127594
because not everyone uses the same sites so by being on loads you show people who wont have seen your comic, which increases your viewership when you switch to your own site
>>
>>81127704
Alternatively, they don't migrate and you lose everything. Advertising with art and sketches and snippets on Twitter, Tumblr and DA can be smart, but hosting the full comics on multiple sites can be to your detriment.
>>
>>81128363
yeah but its better than putting all your eggs in one basket and if people care enough about the comic the majority would migrate.
>>
>>81127704
>not everyone uses the same sites
pretty sure they do. you go to google, you enter in the comic's name, you find it.
or you go to a comic listing site like belfry or topwebcomics and look up the categories you want
nobody enters URLs anymore, they don't give two fucks about what site something's hosted on
>>
>>81127704
I tried this for an extended period of time, using Tapastic to funnel viewers to my site. I had it running for a couple of months and I only had one verifiable clickthrough to my site from Tapastic. It really just doesn't work. Get one site and stick with it.
>>
>>81127594
>>81128749

Is this seriously beyond your comprehension, or are you just pretending to be dense as fuck?

Just because they "can" access multiple sites, doesn't mean they necessarily do.

Some people do, sure, but I can guarantee that there are probably more people who don't.

Some people might love Comicfury but hate Smack Jeeves. Some people might forego the comic hosting sites altogether and just host on tumblr. Some people might just post stuff on DA.

Each site has its own communities, and some people just stick with one. Not everyone is going to necessarily go searching out categories and whatnot either. They're going to be looking at their one site, and seeing what's on their one primary site. You can't google a comic you don't know, but you can randomly be searching around the site you're on to find comics you don't know about.

I can tell you that I had a comic on Comic Fury that had 100+ subscribers, and I was also on SmackJeeves with almost 200 subscribers, and I had maybe 5 people that were overlap from both sites. Most of the rest were exclusive to one site or the other.

You can't honestly say that there is 100%, or 90%, or 75% or even 50% overlap. Chances are, the majority of the people aren't the same.
>>
>>81129250
why would anyone give two shits about whether a site is on comicfury or smackjeeves? sites don't have loyalty like that
yeah they have communities in terms of people who have ACCOUNTS on them because they're MAKING something, but viewers don't.
i mean deviantart has the ability to 'watch' someone so you get all their shit in your inbox, but you're not going to tell me these comic hosting sites to. is that what you mean by 'subscribers' or whatever? what even is that?
>>
>>81129312
>but you're not going to tell me these comic hosting sites to. is that what you mean by 'subscribers' or whatever? what even is that?

Uh...yeah. They do. That is exactly what subscribers are. They get updated when you upload a page or add stuff.

What the fuck do you even think the point of subscribers is?
