it feels like sex at first but the metaphor brakes down the longer the show goes on and more context we get for it. Its more like a union of souls/alien experiences(from our point of view) that has been made more alien by its non traditional use

>>80897333
It's definately... a metaphor for a collection of physical interactions.

Base-line, same gem fusion, now that we've seen it, is additive. Three Rubies became one slightly bigger Ruby. We don't really get to see how much more effective this made them than a single Ruby. In this way, it pretty much just represents teamwork.

Garnet, on the other hand is a combination of two very different gems. They create a creature with powers greater than either base line. Garnet is appearently a better pugilist than ruby, and can see more branching probabilities than Sapphire. Though, alotof this depends on the reliability of a story she told a child on his birthday about her history.

Meanwhile, we have Malachite, which shows that the personalities can remain seperate within the fusion, and Garnet's breakdown with the introduction of the shard-beasts and Stevione talking to herself reinforces that it's not a 100% perfect union of souls.

If anything, it seems more an abstracted "Diversity is strength" message than a sex metaphor. It certianly started as a seeming sex metaphor, but seems more like a teamwork/communication/diversity one as the show goes on.

I'm thinking the surprise and the flaw of Steven being a hybrid will show in this manner, him being only able to fuse with humans. They were all so adamant about human/gem fusion, after all. None of them know the true properties of a hybrid
>>
>>80898413
It's really all about the relationship between the two people. Fusions embody how close their components are, and the kind of relationship they have.

Ruby and Sapphire are a close, loving couple who try to share as much of themselves as possible. The result is Garnet, a fusion so close you'd be forgiven for thinking she was just a regular Gem.

Amethyst and Pearl bicker and snipe a bunch, but they're a lot closer than either would care to admit, and they do manage to keep a good balance between them. Opal is entirely about balance and poise, and seems to carry both of their best traits.

Sardonyx is fairly functional, which shows that Garnet and Pearl are pretty close as well, though she does suffer from snobbishness and show-offedness that reflects that they're not as close as they'd like to think.

Garnet and Amethyst aren't especially close aside from being comrades in arms, so Sugilite is more or less a dumb brute who just wants to fight everything.

The Gems as a whole are fairly dysfunctional. So is Alexandrite.

Stevonnie is uncertain about who they are, intrigued by their peers but uncomfortable with acting their age, and seems to mostly be a way for Steven and Connie to have fun as a grown-up. Steven and Connie are close friends who aren't quite comfortable with taking things to the next level yet because they're a bit young for it.

Lapis and Jasper have nothing in common aside for an antipathy for the Crystal Gems, and hate each other for a multitude of reasons. Malachite, consequently, is held together by spit and doesn't even have a distinct personality.

The problem is likely that you have to synch up in body and mind. Steven is 14yo and he is supposed to synch his mind with 6k years old space warriors.
He likely can't understand enough of them to manage that, not even being a human adult.

>>80900319

I hear what you two are saying. The gems have light bodies, Steven is organic; and the minds have to be in synch and form a relationship strong enough to endure. However, >>80900368 is saying what I'm trying to say.
Steven is both a human and a gem, because of that he should be able to fuse with both species.
>>
>>80900543
It's up in the air. Crewniverse can magically make it so he can't fuse with gems, just as they magically made it so he can fuse with humans (against all odds)
>>
>>80900397
Not precisely. Steven has been shown to mature and age spontaneously under specific circumstances, but just not age normally. He is definitely not pure projection, but he is not simply flesh, either.
And from a scientific point of view, shoving two bodies into one is not possible for humans, so we deal with comparable levels of impossible, I think.

>>80900456
Possible. But I think Peridot is more similar because she is learning, still. Much like Steven.
And she has a similar analytic ear for music, so they might be able to fuse under the impression of a unifying stimulus. Like the Camp Pining Hearts opening, or such.

His being able to do both kinds of fusion would result in mostly gem points (3 gem points vs 1 human point)

Rose seems to be more or less Jasper with less muscle tone. They're both Quartzes, after all.

The difference is that Rose is bearmode - layer of fat over a lot of muscle, on top of a very thickset build. If you've ever seen those dudes who compete in weightlifting competitions, they often don't have much muscle tone because the fat is actually pretty helpful. Rose is (probably) like that; it's hard to tell because her dress covers so much of her.

Well, spite also works. She exists because Jasper wanted an easy powerup and Lapis wanted to say "fuck you" to the whole conflict. Both had the motive of "I want to screw over a person I don't like, and I want them to know it was me."

It's implied in the leaked stuff that Jasper wants Malachite to be together as well, because she thinks she can bully Lapis into line and then crush the Crystal Gems. Malachite exists for no other purpose than revenge.

Amethyst seems to be a fair bit chunkier than either - unlike Rose or Jasper, she has a clearly defined gut and her shoulders don't seem quite as square. It's probably more to show that Amethyst isn't quite as experienced or powerful as the others. But she still seems to be hiding some muscles under that fat.

The big way to tell if someone is fat and strong or just fat is if the fat is a layer, or if it actually hangs off them. Amethyst's pudge stays pretty close to her body, while Steven in early episodes was pretty clearly all gut (he has been working it off, though).

No he hasn't.

That's because the storyboarder artist draws him skinny. He's actually quite fat.

Ayup. Not to mention, he's been living a much more active life and he doesn't seem to be eating as badly. We even see him exercising with Garnet in one episode, and reading a book about fitness in another.
>>
>>80902268
1. He still eats very badly. Like Mexican lifestyle badly.
2. He was just doing that to bug her.
3. Steven doesn't have a very active lifestyle.
4. Steven doesn't read. I mean just look at him.
>>
>>80902327
He runs or walks around for the majority of every episode
>>
>>80902327
>He still eats very badly
The closest thing to genuinely bad food he's eaten in Season 2 was a bagel sandwich with egg and cream cheese. Aside from that, it's either been fairly standard (jam and biscuits, cheese pizza, bacon and eggs), or for a special occasion (birthday cake). It's not exactly healthy living, but he doesn't live off ice cream.

>He was just doing that to bug her.
Nah, it's pretty clear she was doing it for him.

>Steven doesn't have a very active lifestyle.
I can't think of an episode where he doesn't wind up doing some heavy physical activity, bar maybe Chille Tid or the flashback episodes.

>Steven doesn't read. I mean just look at him.
The show's pretty clear that he's an active reader. He went through the Spirit Morph Saga in a matter of days, borrowed books from his dad when his TV privileges were lost, and owns at least one (dubious) self-help book. Not to mention we see the book in his house onscreen and on the table.

Paul Villeco

1. That's still not healthy. He should eat salads and shit.
2. Not really.
3. He's pretty lazy.
4. Reading a couple of books because he had no TV doesn't count; we can't even be sure he actually read them. And I thought his dad has books.

If Ronaldo's ramblings about Sneople are any indication, I've had a theory that it was some reptilian race that originally inhabited Homeworld.
