The TIE Defender and TIE Advanced are both completely better than regular TIE's in every way possible.
The Defender was extremely expensive to produce and reserved for limited use, but the Advanced was set to one day replace the TIE Fighter as it's successor.
Even ignoring those two, you have the more common Interceptors, which are also seemingly absent from TFA.

What will probably eventually happen is that it'll be explained that the FO TIE's have all the upgrades of Defenders/Advanced, but has the TIE Imaginary because it was iconic and Hux liked it or something.

Well the in-universe explanation for TIE's was pretty simple. The Empire didn't have any worthwhile opponents to challenge it and instead they needed a blanket-approach to put a lot of fighters in the hands of a lot of pilots to keep their presence pretty pervasive. So they made the honda civic of outer space by the thousands and it worked out just fine since shitty pirates had things that were worse, or the occasional z-95 which wasn't much better.
I understand the TIE-Bomber, it's a specialized craft that does what the TIE can't but makes sacrifices, fine. I don't get the interceptor. it's just a better TIE fighter. It looks like it uses all the same components of a regular TIE just with some different shapes and some minor upgrades. I mean even in all the video game's it's just a little faster with a second pair of the same lazers, not some radical departure requiring a ton of investment.
The TIE-Advanced / Defender / Phantom (lol) all seemed like the empire trying to get fighters that could compete 1-1 with the higher quality rebel equivalent since the numbers game wasn't working for them anymore. When you're a giant evil empire that has millions of pilots you can probably afford to lose some for the sake of efficiency. The First Order probably isn't that big and needs quality over quantity, so I have no fucking idea why they're still using TIE Fighters outside of nostalgia.

Was originally going to be a part of an Arc during TCW that showed where all the non-movie characters were during Episode 3, and what happened to them during Order 66.

As a kid I always thought that the TIE pilots were stupid for wearing helmets in a space ship and that the rebel pilots had the right idea.... I feel like a balance is the best way to please everyone though. By not doing any Clone War era stuff, you're alienating all of the fans that stuck with the franchise in the 10 years with no movie.
Filoni and Pablo even addressed this at Celebration, stating that they were putting TCW characters into Rebels for this exact reason.
Plus there's the fact that most of the first year of the entire Clone War, and the final and most important months, are all still empty in Canon. They gotta' get back on that eventually.
And in fairness, they have been. Dark Disciple, Son of Dathomir, and Kanan have all slowly been filling in the gaps left by TCW's absence, in the same way that the rest of the books and comics are filling in the gaps left by the EU Purge.
As long as they can maintain some kind of balance so that we as fans get a nice variety of stories with all kinds of characters and era's, I'll be happy.

The balance is there, as you say there's still bridging characters in Rebels to catch up on the TCW arcs and get the stuff they didn't have time to do. But the thing to remember is that a lot of people out there, even people who come here and frequently spout their opinions, just dislike prequel era material on principle. They won't even give TCW a watch to see how bad/good it is, or they watched the animated movie and shrugged and gave up.
Disney are anything but fools. They know that they have a huge market to tap by appealing to OT fanboys, most of whom are now adults with their own families (IE will buy merch for their own kids based on their tastes). They've seen the internet nerd rage and know there's nothing but positive PR for them to go out and say "hey, remember the original movies? those were the best!"
And the prequel fans will still stick around because they're probably also OT fans and follow stuff like Rebels because it has the same creative team as TCW. Largely the same creative team anyway.

The 'we upgraded things'' makes a little bit of sense. If you don't have the resources to produce a bunch of the high tech stuff you go with what you had and improve. Look at tank design in WWII. Firefly is just an upgunned and better Sherman.
The problem though seems to be that these guys have plenty of ability to create new things (new drop ships, star destroyers, AT-ATs, ect.) so why not ditch the old model and find something that works better? Or at least work off a better template. Use an interceptor or advanced or defender.

Holy shit, some actual good news regarding Battlefront.
They just confirmed that, aside from the 16 maps that will be released periodically via the Season Pass, there's also going to be COMPLETELY FREE stuff released too.
We knew that we would be getting two levels set on Jakku completely free, but they have confirmed that there's more free maps to be announced in the future.
It's a small victory, but it means they're finally addressing the lack of variety in maps issue.
So if any of you were put off buying the game at launch because of the lack of maps, then perhaps you can wait for a drop in price, and buy it when it has more maps available via the free DLC.
Credit where credit is due, this is definitely something I am happy about.
Although I will be completely disappointed if these are just more Hoth/Tatooine maps and not actually new Planets. I mean, Jakku is free DLC and a new Planet, so it's not too out-there to assume the other free maps will be new planets too, right?

I am definately hoping for more "alien worlds". My biggest problem with Battlefront (and by extension TFA) is the lack of truly Alien worlds. I get what they're going for by making things grounded and realistic, but I don't wanna' play Star Wars games for their realistic looking locations.
I want to fight in the Sinkhole city of Utapau. I want to fight in the swamps of Felucia. I want more than anything, to play on Coruscant. How can you make a Star Wars game and not have a futuristic city level? I was expecting Bespin at the very least.
If they add Clone Wars (which definitely wont be free, they'll be saving that for the paid DLC if they're doing it) then I want Umbara, Geonosis, the battle of Kamino.
And for a wildcard, why not a level based on the Mandalorian Civil War on Mandalore? Throw in Maul and Bo Katan as the Hero/Villain characters.
And I was thinking, for Fighter Squadron, we can get Vader in a TIE Advanced X1, and on the heroes side, the Ghost. Seems abysmally lazy that they only have 2 hero characters for that game mode.

Describe the Seige, I haven't read the book.
There are a few Sullust levels.
The main one, featured in Walker Assault/Supremacy is a large level set on an Imperial Weapons factory. Not much to say about it other than theres a bunch of Rebels fighting a bunch of Stormtroopers in a factory where the open areas are full of lava streams.
Then there's the survival mission, which is in a similar location, with a brief intro cutscene about some Rebels stealing plans. (They dont way what in particular, but there's holograms of AT-AT's and Interceptors.)
Then there's a Single Player training mission which is pretty damn cool. You play in an AT-ST Walker fighting Rebels on Sullust, and in the distance there's a big battle between Vader's SD, and a Rebel Cruiser (ends with the Cruiser falling to the planet sending black dust clouds everywhere)
Any of these sound familiar to the book?

Twilight had to fortify a massive refinery they'd retreated to after plans seriously went to shit. Empire threw a massive army at them instead of orbital bombardment to keep the factory intact and part of why they'd survived was redirecting the lava flow down the mountain.

There are many different types across different worlds and armories, but most of them are speeders or repulsorcraft. The T#-B series from their RTS games and the AAC series from Battlefront spring to mind. They don't use captured walkers as often as I would if I was a rebel. Did Chewie ever keep his stolen AT-ST? The walker that won the war.

I doubt it. This was something Leland Chee was aware of before the new continuity started. Everything beyond the movies will remain supplemental, as it always was. If you partake in the sideshow then you'll know more about what's going on or the background of certain characters, etc, but they won't force you to watch a cartoon or read a comic to understand what is going on. The movie still need to stand on their own.
But this doesn't mean the periphery stuff is lessened. As much as the Prequels do stand on their own, insofar as the story is all there, TCWs is DEFINITELY suggested material given how much it fleshes out and, frankly, redeems a lot of the Prequel material. Just for the superior characterization for Anakin alone it is worth it, but still people can miss all of that and they'll be fine.
