My money goes to Foreign Exchange student since it would be consistent with how she acted around Gustav/Charlie.
1. She's classmates with the first two(and Marco's wing(mew)man on the former. So I can't really picture her having ill-will towards either one of them.
2. If Marco does manage to land a date with Jackie, I'd prefer the show focuses on their character development rather than how Star feels about it(negative or otherwise.)
3.. A lot of the girl FEStudents looked like real cuties. I'm always up for seeing more of any Foreign Exchange student.

But the idea of the "doubles" of Marco and Star is really old: I foreshadowed it back in "Princely Life"!Yeah, I wanted the lemonade gag not to be too on the nose, so I just nested it inside a different one.
I must confess that I take LOTS of inspiration for my fics around here (actually, /sveg/ remains the only reason I write them at all), andthe idea of Astra was inspired when someone suggested the idea that Star didn't have empathy: well, I disagree, and Astra is how I see Star would be, if she were a complete sociopath. I am currently suffering from a nasty case of writer's block, but I DO plan to write more, in fact I am writing a multy-parter fic for which "What I Really Want" was more or less "part 0" of it.Well technically all my fics share the same continuity, I just wrote them in terverse chronological order, with the sabrina fic being the farthest in the timeline (happens right before Interdimensional Field Trip) and Step Two the earliest (right after Monster Arm), so thats why they don't reference each other until the last I wrote which happens right after the Storm the Castle episode.
"Step Two" was a weird happening, I went in wanting to write a "Spaghetti Janna" fic and then it became... that... To this day is the fic I enjoyed the most writing since it kinda wrote itself, it's hard to explain!

This is something I liked especially from your story. It was handled quite well, subtle, but not so much that it came out of left field.Like Paolo's description of being treated like a manservant was probably the earliest clue that Astra was just plain selfish compared to Star's oblivious selfishness. Paolo himself lacked Marco's compassion as shown by his dryer humor, and tendency for physical aggression. It was kinda sad how the steampunk pair felt like a Starco antithesis with them dragging each other down, rather than improving each other. They didn't have each other's backs at all. But maybe it just comes off that way because they were in an antagonistic role here?
The conflict was fairly complex, but not so much to cause muddled feelings. Like, I understood the two sides' perspective, yet understood why one side was clearly 'bad' and another 'good' in this particular case. Hope's arc was also intriguing, and played thematically well with the story and cast. That whole factor of how people are people, and can't just be simplified into numbers and statistics cut deep.Especially since it was a coping mechanism for her familial situation.(Unless I was reading that part wrong) I loved the scene where you had her spy on people commenting on their shallowness, only to find deeper information that throws her observations right back at her.
It's always a treat to see your stories. I guess my only complaint is that they're always so long(not really a bad thing), and I'm such a slow reader that the thread is already over by the time I get done.

The analogies and the difference in their relation, compared to Starco, are both fascinating and jarring, at least to me.
Apart from the "gremlins are invisible rats" monologue by Paolo (which would make sense, and one could get behind that point of view), though, I forced my hand a little to make them unsympathetic villains, in the end: part of the title of this series is "VS the Forces of Evil", after all!
About Hope,you are completely right: she had developed her "Index" as a way for her to process and rationalize sentimental relationships, up to the point she would almost look at people's feelings (including her own friends!) in a sterile, clinical way. By the end, she realizes she was wrong, but she's also on the right path to finally understand how feelings and relations work IRL.

My issue with this AU is that the top pairing turns from cute and perfect into oil and water. Their dynamic is understandably different due to their changes. I also much prefer one anon's suggestion that this Star should've just took after her mother instead of all this convoluted St.O's stuff. Have the badboy bring her wild side out naturally, instead of breaking her conditioning.(which while isn't a big scary machine is still brainwashing, which is why its a source of drama in that au, like it pisses BBMarco off, and the Queen gradually learns that she screwed up royally as a parent.)
I feel it lends itself MUCH better to alternate romantic routes, but such alternatives were sunk by the creator before even leaving the dock.

It took Marco some more time than his parents to adapt to Star's behavior. Most people would probably freak out a bit if a magical girl just showed up and wanted to live at their place. Too much change going on in too short a timeframe or something of that nature for poor Marco.
