Anyone know what this is meant to be? I was guessing it to be a compound verb, something like あり + やがむ maybe, but can't find anything like the such in any dictionary.

Japanese feels weird like that. You'll be reading and when glancing over long strings of familiar kanji it is like your eyes fly off in front till eventually slowed down by a drop off in grammatical direction and a wall of images, nouns, etc. then speeding back off again in short bursts. Almost as though the 'grammatical stuff' was merely directing your minds eye to the meaningful chunks of what is actually there, like a torch in the dark illuminating regions of an old house.

>>142922470

>>
>>142922554
Most of my reading materials are manga and I have found text easier to read, likely due to the familiarity and associations I've formed with the form. A lot of anons reckon that grammar for the most part is something that you overcome a lot earlier than you may assume.

If it's possible to learn kanji simply through vocab, then why do Japs, who should've seen them every single day for years and years, have to drill them through rote repetition to learn them?
>>
I found this example in core2k:

彼は注射があまり好すきではありません。

He's not too fond of getting shots.

What is this supposed to mean? The phrase already means "he's not too fond of getting shots" without the ではありません so there must be an extra meaning to the phrase or something similar.

Not his fault desu. It's the fault of shitty dictionaries defining amari as "(not) too much" just because it is often used with negatives; this trips up beginners a lot.

I think >>138275729 was right on this. I finally got to そこで in the DoIJG and remembered my old question from Hanahira. From what I read, そこで seems to be reserved for a volitional reason for taking an action, so it doesn't seem it could mean "accordingly" in this case.

>>142923535
あまり・あんまり is frequently found paired in negative verb clauses, which is where the "not too" part of the meaning comes from. 余り itself refers to a remainder value, of which as a modifier to 好き is how you get the notion of an amount of "liking something" with the negatively conjugated copular, basically defining that "amount of [liking something]" to be negative overall.
You will eventually see this negative construct again in the form of のあまり~ない. Japanese is an agglutinative language, which unlike English uses conjugations to more or less dictate the overall meaning of a clause.
The TL;DR is to pay extra attention to how the very conjugates in a sentence to get a hint as to how things like adverbs and other modifiers are altered in meaning. The patterns are common so if you pay more attention early, you'll come to feel them more intuitively sooner.

Japanese people care about penmanship unfortunately. Once they flipped their shit after I showed them my handwritten research essay.
>>
>>142926635
Yeah, no. It is "supposed" to be written like that in the same way the letter a is supposed to be written as "a". That's why I said read actual handwritting because it has nothing to do with neatness. Honestly there is very little more annoying than beginners trying to tell people what is "correct" when it is obvious that you have no real world experience and just like every fucking manchild you just want to be pointlessly "right" about something when it holds no real insight.

My handwriting is fine because I use it for actual communication with actual Japanese instead of being some sperg who has to "right on the Internet". Your guidance isn't necessary, champ.

That's not how you write 僕

You wrote something like「亻業」, whereas ぼく has no stroke down the middle. See the difference between 業 and 僕 aside from the 亻?

I used to often make this mistake too. My Japanese teacher made me commit sudoku

I'm trying to play an official Nintendo mahjong game for the DS (Yakuman DS) to learn how to play mahjong. It has Mario characters and such so it probably uses easy Japanese. I'd rather learn through a Japanese source than to use a western guide and I don't want to risk encountering complex grammar so I ended up choosing this.

Tried reading for the first time after I got almost 2000 card (1800~) on Core2k6k and reading Tae Kim's grammar guide until other uses of Te-form.

Shit. I'm not ready for this. I need to brush up my grammar more, I guess.

What's the average months that one can read beginner VNs?
>>
>>142935149
No, you need to keep reading. Trust me. Knowledge of grammar point isn't enough to understand actual, non-textbook writing. You need exposure.
>>
>>142935149
Don't trust the first anon who quoted you. As it is often mentioned in these threads, you should only read after finishing Tae Kim and Core 2k.
>>
>>142935242
>reading tae kim's grammar guide until other uses of Te-form

No, he needs to finish tae kim first
>>
>>142935149

Don't trust the other two anons. You should absolutely finish Tae Kim and start reading DOJG, but Core will never prepare you for vocab rape. Finish the grammar guide and dive in.
>>
>>142935361
Yea, I passed over that for whatever reason. What I wanted to tell him is that there's more to reading than knowledge of grammar as it's presented in textbooks. That's not to say you don't need that knowledge as well.
>>
>>142935149
Why do you have that much vocab yet you aren't done with TK?

You should've finished it ASAP and start reading constantly.

I just need to be ready for the 切腹 if its really hard.
>>
>>142935579
>>142935631
I mainly focused on Anki. Haven't had much free time juggling through Uni and learning moonrunes. Now that I've got a big break, figured to do Tae Kim and was too excited to take a peak into reading, realizing I'm not ripe enough.
>>
Fuuuuck why are there still always so many words I don't know whenever I pick anything up

Looking up words is so fucking 面倒
>>
>>142935149
Don't trust the previous 7 anons who replied you, trust me instead.

Do run a mile everyday so you can build more stamina to endure harder studying sessions.

That aside, finish up your grammar, it's not hard. Also, like a previous anon said, non-textbook grammar is slight different, so you need exposure to get used to some contractions/slurs.

Just don't keep mindlessly reading guides and doing exercises without reading.
Kanas -> Grammar -> Read stuff with a dic to build Vocab/Kanji

Also, don't read Flyable Heart as your very first thing ever in Japanese, it might be easy but it's not that easy, and you don't want to ruin such a masterpiece due to lack of understanding. You should finish some easy manga like Yotsubato, or Hanahira first.

And how fucking slowly have you been going through Tae Kim? You must've been doing Core for 3 months if you're that far into it, yet somehow you've only just got past Tae Kim's basic grammar section. Tae Kim should take you like 2 weeks, man.

Everyone is confused how 晶 got into the school even though 皇 flat out admits that it was him, how come no one simply asked him why he did it?
>>
>>142935879
Grammar and reading are both more important than Core. Core is only there to help you a little bit when you first start reading by making it so that you don't have to look up as many words.

If you have to choose between Tae Kim and doing Core, read Tae Kim. If you have to choose between reading and doing Core, read. Core is a luxury, and once you start reading it no longer has a purpose since from that point on you're in mining territory.

I've tried two methods:
>do the cards at a suitable pace until you stop getting new cards, and then read more
>rep all the cards soon after adding them, adjust your reading pace to keep the reps manageable

The latter is harder to do, since you have to stop reading when you still have enough fight in you to do the reps, but it's more efficient.
