とする has a lot of uses. If you post the sentence you saw it would be easier to help you.
>>
>>142886082
Well I mostly encounter it as "to decide to do something", it shows that someone has made the decision that they want to do a verb but haven't yet done it, or are just about to do it

Most of the time I see it in the context of "just as he decided to stick his dick in the hole, a knife came out and stabbed in the urethra", that sort of shit

It has other uses though that's just the one I think is most common

If I had to say what SEEMS to be the hardest thing about it is that people can't try to think in their language's equivalents, japanese words and particles in general have a very distinct meaning but that's probably unlike anything in YOUR language.

When you start trying not to think what it means in your language, but "thinking" in japanese, everything makes much more sense.

>>142891648
Finno-Ugric connection is a complete lie fabricated to destroy our true ancestry. The origin of Hungarians is much further to the east, as we are descendants of Japanese explorers coming to the Asian mainland. This is also the reason why it's so easy for Hungarians to learn Japanese, as we are simply remembering what we already knew once thousands of years ago.

>>
>>142891581

Tbh I think wanikani is not actually that awful, but four things hold it back.

1. Too slow. You cannot dictate your own pace.
2. Free resources are better. If you want to do a radical-mnemonic method then koohii is superior due to the community stories for basically every kanji. If you want to learn vocab you are better off mining it. If you want an SRS Anki is better than theirs.
3. Hard to transition. When you finish all wanikani has to offer, you are left without a solid path to go down.
4. Costs money. I suppose this is superfluous since it is worse than free alternatives anyway, but it is not free, unlike anki & friends.

All of this said, while it is an inferior resource in almost every way, you could do a lot worse. It is not comparable to something like Rosetta Stone, for example.

What is it supposed to be? Some steps seem like the shit all agglutinative languages e.g. Japanese do (like the longest words on the very right), but some transitions like 'to visit' into 'to use' can't possibly be because of some grammar rule. Seems more like maybe they are the etymological roots or something? If that is the case then you can make similar graphs in every agglutinative language.

I checked out that reddit "V2K" deck. Seems not too bad, except:

1. No example sentences. One could argue this is not a big deal but I think it is important for newbies to have some context for the words since they likely will not be doing any actual reading yet and will otherwise have nothing to connect the words to actual usage.
2. The card format has furigana on the front which makes it pretty pointless. That can easily be changed though.

I think the ideal newbie deck would just be a proper reordering of Core to not be shit.

Leave them and delete one at the time as you encounter them.

If they all have one field empty (shouldn't it be the reason they don't have the other card type?), or one field with the same annotation or something like this (how do you know which ones they are?) you could try filtering only them in browser and deleting.

Move all the cards of the type you don't won't into another deck. This won't delete or move the whole note, and if Kanji Grid can be limited to only one deck then your problem would be solved, but you would be forever left with one additional deck.

>If they all have one field empty (shouldn't it be the reason they don't have the other card type?)
It's the opposite, unfortunately. The ones which I need to delete don't have a counterpart of the other card type because the other card type would have an empty field for the front side of the card.

>how do you know which ones they are?
Pic related. See the chunks of suspended cards with no unsuspended ones between them? Those are the ones I need to delete.

「膾炙」の「膾」は、なますのことで、細かく切った肉や魚のこと。
「炙」は、あぶった肉のこと。なますも炙り肉もごちそうで、誰の口にもおいしく感じられ、もてはやされることから。

Uh, I don't really have any recommendations sorry. I mostly just meant clicking on random livedoor links, listening to and watching stuff on japanese youtube, using japanese google image search for words, etc.
>>
>>142894230
You mean a hanzi deck

>It's the opposite, unfortunately. The ones which I need to delete don't have a counterpart of the other card type because the other card type would have an empty field for the front side of the card.
I'm a fucking idiot. There was an empty field. I don't know what I was thinking when I typed this out.

Anyway, problem solved. I just had to search
>English:
in the browser and that filtered out all the cards with nothing in the English field (the ones I needed to delete).

Thanks >>142894000

I've been doing the KanjiDamage anki deck for a few months and I'm 1500 cards in but I'm starting to feel like I'm getting a lot more benefit from vocab decks instead recently. Do you guys think it would be a waste to drop the KD deck at this point or should I just push through?
>>
>>142894690
Don't you only have like 200 cards left?
>>
>>142894635
Irrelevant to both anime and Japanese learning. Reported.
>>
>>142894690
I'm pretty sure KanjiDamage only teaches 1700 kanji so it would be pretty dumb to drop it at 1500. Assuming you're doing 20 cards a day, you have less than 3 weeks left until you finish it.

You're either so advanced that you don't remember how much of a pain it was to get to your level or you're a beginner.

>>142895026
Since 3500 / 2 = 1750, I'm going to go ahead and guess this means the deck has both recognition and production cards and that you've been doing both types when you should've actually suspended/deleted one or the other.

Is Japan behind the rest of the world in torrents? Newly released books over here pretty much instantly have epubs up everywhere, yet I can't find things that are already a year or older on nyaa, or if I find them they're only there as screenshots of the pages (lol).

Is nyaa the largest tracker they use, or something else sekrit?

What does this say?
>>
>>142895347
Recognition = see a kanji and recognise what it is (kanji -> meaning)
Production = see the meaning of a kanji and produce said kanji from memory (meaning -> kanji)

I'm pretty sure when you're doing KD or RTK, you're supposed to only do one method or the other. Heisig tells people in RTK to go the production route for reviewing kanji.
>>
>>142895321
Yes, individual grammar points are simple to read about and understand. Now try actually reading native material.

>>142895343
Then what was difficult? You can look up any word or kanji by yourself. If you're having difficulty understanding the meaning of a sentence you have no choice but to find a Japanese person or someone who's at a higher level than you.
>>
>>142895301
>>142895361
I didn't know about 'Share', googled and it seems interesting. Though it feels pretty early 2000 to be using a program for something like this. Guess I'll try it out

>>

And you're trying to tell me you don't constantly encounter ambiguity? Hard to believe your story. I've been studying for years and still encounter ambiguity that needs clarification from Japanese friends.
>>
>>142895504
>learn two-kanji word word XY
>half a year later learn XZ
>continue to mix up XY and XZ for weeks
>half a year later learn VY and ZY
>now mix up all four words for while
If you learn kanji as part of vocab, you will always associate the kanji with the words where you first saw them.

>>
>>142895575
Yes I do find them, sometimes I don't know if the head noun of a relative is the result, the agent, the subject, object etc...
Sometimes the grammar is weird and with slang it gets messy.
Generally the end of a clause is a verb which modifies a noun.
Also は fucks me up

Could you give me an example anyway?

You should also hope that it's in Japanese, and not a pre-applied chinese fan translation.
>>

>Then what was difficult?
Listening, reading handwriting, speaking

Reading isn't really "difficult" per say it just takes tons of time and effort and practice.

>If you're having difficulty understanding the meaning of a sentence you have no choice but to find a Japanese person or someone who's at a higher level than you.

Or just skip it or whatever. After a year or so of reading you can usually figure out pretty much everything but you still have a while to go with vocab.

>>
>>142895764
Pretty much the same, it means quotation.
>>
>>142895575
I wouldn't call ambiguity the result of the grammar being difficult. "It went there and did that thing" is a very ambiguous sentence with simple grammar.

>What's the king's game?
>It's: The one who can do the most King-like behaviour wins"

That's not ambiguous at all, it just lacks details.
For example in Japanese the sentence would lack the ' I ' part, so you would have to tell from context who actually did that. That's ambiguous.

Of an ambiguous sentence? I don't save them or anything. I get clarification and move on.

This is really the only example I remember.

You're right, but it's just a strange sentence. You wouldn't really encounter such a comparison in English so it's hard to understand why the author would write something like that. The second guessing yourself comes in and then you try to find another meaning for it.
