They ventured into making moar cores and threads but it just happened that nobody worked with that, devs were still stuck in the stone age of single stuff, so AMD got fucked.
What did they do? Mantle. They slowly forced the industry to realize the necesity of cores and threads, they started working with microsoft and now we have DX12. Also Vulkan.
Now a lot of old processors got improved by DX12 and so did their cards, nvidia is shit in dx12.

Although he may have had his own reasons for doing it I don't think spinning off the fabs was necessarily wrong. Fabs are expensive to keep operating, a lot of them have had to merge together or go out of business due to the costs. Likely the only reason global foundries hasn't had to do the same yet is the rich arabs that are giving them money and their partnerships with IBM, samsung, and the other fab companies in the common platform.
