What? Am I missing something here? I thought the idea was to learn hiragana, gain some vocabulary, then find your own preferred method for understanding kanji. I'm just starting out so I've been trying to stick to the guide.

Thanks for clearing that up, the guide was really misleading. It literally says to choose your own method for learning kanji, then gives you this as if it's mandatory anyway.

I think I'll study the radicals as opposed to brute forcing because to me anki seems useless (to me at least) unless you have some basic understanding. It seems great for testing yourself and cementing the knowledge later on though.

Are there tools like this without the kanji? I was hoping to at least get to memorizing some words in hiragana. I was really pumped to actually be able to put to use the hours memorizing all those symbols.

>I'm just starting out so I've been trying to stick to the guide.
All you need is something like the following:
*learn the basic phonetic script/kana and their sounds (if you aren't already familiar with how Japanese sounds, go back in time and start watching anime with the volume turned up).
*read a basic grammar text to come to terms with the structure of the language (Tae Kim, Japanese the Manga Way, Visualising Japanese Grammar, Genki- take your pick).
*reviewing new words and kanji in anki every day with one of the recommended vocab and kanji decks (Core vocab decks, JLPT decks; one of the many kanji decks out there, etc.)
*use the DoJG anki deck alongside vocab/kanji.
*consuming a shit load of Japanese during this process.
It's basically a fool proof way to learn Japanese, easy as piss.

Adult learners of almost everything are too sceptical for their own good and spend far too much time second guessing themselves at every moment, which is why kids are said to learn languages so well, because they're dump fucks who happily accept anything and have no problem with being involved in speaking/listening/reading 24/7. Kids are the same with instruments: stick them in front of a piano and they'll play chords over and over till their parents try to get them to go to bed, meaning they master the basics without really noticing whereas an adult trying to do the same thing will spend half his time stopping, trying to perfect every key and constantly seeking feedback as to how they have fucked up, as they always assume everything they do is wrong due to over analysing everything.

>>
>>142135844
There are way too many words with exactly the same kana spelling for that to be reasonable, at least with anki. Also kanji help a huge amount in recognizing Japanese words. Knowing certain kanji and being able to intuit their readings and remember their meanings in new words has helped me memorize vocab more than anything else.
The best course of action now would probably be to read Tae Kim if you haven't done that yet, since grammar always trumps everything else when it comes to comprehension, and then see what you can pick up in anime in the meantime.

All of them are arbitrarily far from fluency because they don't test any production.

N1 means you should be able to comprehend most written things, and be able to comprehend spoken things in "ideal" conditions (no accent or significant competing noises, seiyuu teir pronunciation, no yelling, etc) which usually means you will be able to understand people in 1 on 1 conversations but good luck when two kansai speaking Japanese people are talking to each other.

Wow dude I'm sorry that you suck at listening comprehension and fucked up the N1 test but you gotta be more objective here.
>>
So when you see interpretors or people who claim to speak a second language, was it because they grew up in an environment where they had to learn multiple languages because of their parents or region and they are practically native in them both/all?

Or in the case where they studied did they reach something at or beyond the equivalent of JLPT1?

Or are there just idiots who can maintain a daily conversation that claim they can "speak" some language?

Are you fucking retarded? Taking a test in person is not the same as leisurely watching it online.

>but you gotta be more objective here.
You're talking about psychology here as though it doesn't have any impact. I'm sorry but you don't have a fucking clue what you're on about. There is a reason why tests are structured the way they are, because there is a vast difference between performing under pressure and doing the same thing relaxed. The latter doesn't have much relation to real world stresses involved in using a language.

Everyone likes to shit on the JLPT but they'd be the last to sit it, as chances are they know that outside of their comfy spaces in their rooms, their language ability under pressure would reveal weaknesses they wouldn't want to accept. That's one thing at least normalfags are less arrogant about. JCAT is easier than the JLPT in a lot of respects, but autists like to pretend as though language only extents to the outer reaches of their texthooked pornographic novel games. I see smug faggots like you by the truckload who will never grow more proficient than their isolationist bubble allows.

Could you hold a conversation with a native talking about a particular topic whilst sitting in a cafe surrounded by people and music playing in the background? I can. Language has a fundamental real time social element which cannot be ignored.

Okay, thanks for clearing up my misconception. Guess I can't really put off learning Kanji then. And I haven't looked into grammer much yet so I'll do that.

Still, how essential is anki? Everyone seems to swear by it, but from trying it for a bit I've found it very unhelpful. I don't know ANY of the kanji so I can't keep the definition and pronunciation in my mind long enough so by the time I've gotten back to one word, and tried memorize the other several words in between, I've completely forgotten everything. It might just be my terrible short term memory, but are there any tips for how to make better use of anki? Am I using the tool wrong?

Well I actually did try for some time in the beginning, but I ran into the same problem as you did with kanji and also found the first few hundred core2k words to be completely useless in practice so I dropped the deck.

It's something like 7 or 8 months since I first started studying up on the language, and since then I've built enough of a foundation with grammar and kanji to be able to trudge through an LN with a dictionary and understand everything, and it just feels much better to me to discover vocab that way than it does to drill words in anki. I won't deny anki's usefulness but I don't think I will use it for hardcore daily drilling anymore. Maybe a mining deck when I run into a wall.

Can't see the google doc, but I recommend this book as well as "Essential Japanese Grammar" by Akira Miura. The vocab one has 300 pages of about 500 words, most of which you probably already know. The good part is that is gives very clear explanations of what situations to use words in versus other words that have the same or similar use or english translation.

The grammar just has a whole lot of important grammar points, and a huge index of words divided by word type (noun, adjective, adverb, etc). If you are high level you'll know most if not all of the grammar but the index is a good source of words.

I mean everything depends on your level but among many shitty books i've bought, these were pretty good

I pretty much just used anki for that. Did a deck with radicals in it first and then did another deck with both production and recognition cards for kanji. I have somewhere around 2000 mature kanji cards right now, after stopping the flow of new cards and deleting all the production ones.

The deck I did had a few example words for all the kanji that had common enough words that they could be used in. This helps a little in getting around clumsy keywords and finding a more "true" meaning for some of the kanji.

I didn't really employ the RTK method (that is, remembering one unique keyword per kanji through a convenient mnemonic device using its parts), instead I just made sure I knew what I was looking at and what kinds of words it was used in.
Also I wrote them down a bunch of times; this was a significant time investment.

If you're looking to completely avoid using anki, then I don't know what advice I can give you about kanji specifically.

When I'm using Anki, I always write down every single kanji of the card (including the ones in the example sentence) on a piece of paper, but this often takes too long and I'm unable to concentrate until I'm done with the deck.

Should I start writing down only the main kanji of the card or keep on doing this?

/djt/'s level of skill is incredibly weird.
Grammar and comprehension-wise, it's sub-par compated to the level a learner would be for their amount of experience, but at the same time the typical /djt/-goer tends to know some esoteric kanji, obscure verbal forms even a native wouldn't know exactly, and generally unknown idioms.

All of this while ignoring the majority of basic Japanese.
It's fascinating.

At that point you have no vocabulary? Or was there some unspoken agreement that you need to be autistic and spend your life doing Anki? It's either that or machine TL for vocab. I guess every autist ITT did Anki for some basic vocab and then pretends he can read anything.

you don't need vocab to read something
you use a dictionary and the context those words appear in to learn as you go
all you need is a good grasp of grammar beforehand so you can piece together the elements and picture what's going on
the more advanced grammar comes from slowly honing more precise conceptions of what certain phrases mean after hearing them many times
this is what learning as you go or learning through exposure means
it's the fundamental principle behind learning literally anything

I used to look forward to Kairakuten releases every month but somehow they seem to have become very bland as of late. I tried reading Vol. 7 of Comic KOH a few months ago which was fantastic and quickly becoming my favourite magazine. Somehow they've managed to keep all the submissions very high quality, and most importantly, they focus on the H which is something that a lot of artists tend to forget. No matter how good your art is, nobody is going to like your work if it's 8 pages of introductions to the character full of dumb dialogue and character interaction, 2 pages of foreplay, 2 pages of H in the standard positions and the cumshot taking up maybe half a page.

I have a txt file where I take down the names of artists that I like, but it seems like so many of them are very inconsistent. Whereas artists from KOH seem to be very competent and deliver on every single issue.

Other thoughts: The "dominant girl at the start gets dominated by weak beta partner who ruins the femdom" trope is really fucking annoying(http://exhentai.org/s/7918255e30/718113-47) . If they're too lazy, artists should stick to pandering to one audience, otherwise go all the way and make it so that they take turns fucking each other (http://exhentai.org/g/322029/7cb6f86a43/). Some of the more mainstream and liked artists among /a/ haven't been active for a while either. Where is yamatogawa and syati kamakobo (Yamatogawa's colour work in KOH 7 was lovely though) ?

I seem to have rambled a bit and ended up sounding like a shill for Comic KOH (汗)

Momotarou was a nice read. It seems like Akutagawa's version deviates from the original folk tale, probably to convey some sort of political message. Imouto?

Yea, that's fine. Really there very few really bad learning methods. That Anki and the guide are criticized at least indicates that people do use them. It's when something isn't talked about at all that you really should start to worry.
>>
>>142142736
>I have no hurry to start reading anyway
reading should consist of at least 60% of your studies

time not spent reading is time spent not really learning

memorizing radicals is like memorizing building blocks of kanji but they don't mean anything by themselves at all

the idea is you tie a meaningless keyword to each meaningless radical and when you look at a kanji, you can recall the components that makes it up to help with memorization

it's mostly useless unless you want to be able to write by hand

The guide is good, but it's important for people to realize it's not the be-all end-all. That one guy keeps saying it, but it's important for you to do what you think will work best for you. The best thing about self-teaching is that you can tailor everything to your own needs.
