Tadoku works.

But it doesn't "make sense" for it to work so 9 out of 10 ankidrones won't even give it a shot.

He's not entirely wrong but learning vocab through hearing it and reading it would take far longer than just memorization.

>>142111241
It depends, I actually agree with Steve when it comes to alphabetic languages, but for logographic languages like Japanese anki is the way to go. Even Steve has said he spent months doing brute-force memorization with flashcards when he learned Chinese.

I just got a warning from Firefox that the Rikaichan addon is going to be disabled next time I start up the browser, because it "could not be verified" even though I've had it for years now.

Uninstall it and re-install it. For some reason the auto-update from the unsigned version of Rikaisama to the signed version doesn't work. Mozilla, for security reasons, have made it so that add-ons have to be signed now or Firefox won't let you install them. This update came quite a while ago so you must've been putting off installing a Firefox update for some time for this to not have happened sooner.

It still phones home to Google,[9] and for some time, snuck in a binary blob for voice recognition whenever you started it up.[7] This has been removed by the project maintainers,[8] but it should raise some concern over what else could be lurking in the code.

Why did Japan borrow words like kiss, date, sex and rape from English?
Didn't they have words for that some years ago?
>>
うんこしたいけどボクの妹の服を履いてるなんてどうしよう

They did but English is so cool!!!

Of course they did.
接吻、逢瀬、強姦、挨拶、respectively.

They just used 愛す for all of those things

But every kanji only has a single English word as it's meaning didn't you do RTK?

If you really did watch a good amount of anime for "several years" then your vocabulary level should be significantly higher than most beginner-intermediate learners.

Unless you're just a retard.

How would you know to use kun'yomi or on'yomi readings? Shit has been bugging me since I've started learning, and I can't find a satisfactory explanation for it.

Most anime watchers barely know more than a hundred words.

If two kanji are next to each other, 95% of the time it's on-. If it's standalone or hiragana is connecting them like 取り引き, it's 95% of the time kun-.
There is no guaranteed rule, you just have to learn them through vocab.
>>

Are you a kanji cuck? If you learn vocab you'll know.
>>

You have to look up words to know what they mean, which I'm guessing you didn't do.
>>
>>142117431
There's the "cool" factor like someone else said and then there's the "it's in another language so it doesn't sound so bad/not as big of a stigma". DV (domestic violence) comes to mind. They tend to use that more than their native word.

>>

seems like you didn't do either, because RTK does NOT teach meanings.

It just gives each kanji a unique name. That name is usually one of the meanings of that kanji, but not always the most common one.

I didn't see it in the guide, so I was curious what people thought of WaniKani. I've been using it for a month, and it seems to have helped at least a little bit. I've seen Anki suggested a lot, so I was thinking of using them in conjunction. Thoughts?
>>
>>142118780
WK is slow and limits you, even ignoring the fact that it costs money.
Basically you're paying for limitations while anki is customizable for free.
>>
>>142118780
Most people don't like it because it costs money after a certain level and doesn't allow you to study at your own pace because it has its own curriculum
>>
>>142118804
>>142118816

Awesome, the exact things I was looking for. I haven't gotten past the point where it's no longer free, so I may just finish it out to there while I transition over to Anki.
>>
>>142118681
Kind of.

First, you're wasting time. The way spaced repetition works, is that it shows you the words just enough so that you can remember most of them with minimal effort (=reviews). You could be using that time to learn more words instead, or focus on other things (reading, listening, grammar...)

Then, if you do additional reviews that don't count, you're sidestepping the spaced repetition. You'll answer that you remember words after X days, in the intervals, which works fine as long as you keep doing those additional reviews. Eventually the words will have really long intervals, you stop the additional reviews and forget them all by the time the next review is due.

Custom Study-->"Review forgotten cards" is fine, "Review ahead" or "Study by Tag" should be avoided, unless you're actually cramming for an upcoming test

oops, that didn't belong there.

>>142118998
You shouldn't be afraid to add more cards because you think you might not be able to remember them. Not remembering a card just increases your short term review load for those cards. As long as you keep up the reviews, you will eventually get them.

Just adjust the amount of new cards based on how many reviews you can handle, not on how many cards you think you can remember.
>>
Why does Heisig use so many weird and obscure English words? It's annoying as fuck.
>>
>>142119241
Many kanji have the same or similar meanings, but the point of the method is giving each kanji a unique keyword. He had to use some weird terms to avoid reusing the same words.

Idea for the DOJG deck: Put the first example sentence on the front of the card and the translation on the back. Once you start memorizing the whole sentences, switch the first example sentence to the second on the template to make sure you really understand the grammar point.
