Pick up some manga series

After you're done with the first 2 volumes you'll know 80% of the vocab for all future volumes

Works for LNs as well, point is that you should focus on a single author and a single series to learn that vocab-bubble

Don't allow yourself to become demoralised friend

Here's a tip that will perhaps help you

Based on my experiences at least, and I've been doing this for probably 4 years now, every time you start anything new it it always feels like it's way too hard

Everything I've ever picked up and tried to read, I always think "why is this so fucking hard", no matter how easy it may be

The trick is you just have to stick to it, even if it feels like it's way above your level, you stick to it, and then you stick to it some more, and before you realise it you're looking back and laughing at how hard your past self found it

So maybe just try and stick to yotsuba instead of just assuming it's too hard and giving up, and you may see that you're not as bad as you thought
>>
>>141619750

I've been running a kanjidamage kanji deck because I find it a little easier to learn through similar radicals even if the shit they teach you at first is mostly useless garbage, but I've been noticing that even after so long I haven't even made it past half of their "1700" kanji.

I have my new cards at 20 from the default 10, but I noticed these include both read and write cards so technically I'm only doing 10 new kanji per day.

Should I increase my new cards to 30-40? My usual anki session has me review a measly 100 cards per day (read+write so its actually just 50 kanji) and so far I feel comfortable with it

However I've also noticed that learning the kanji Aline isn't being very helpful at actually reading stuff since I don't know any jukugo.
>>
>>141609661
>raw rice is called kome 米, while cooked rice is gohan ご飯

>今日も美味しいお米が炊けたわ
>>
>>141620241
But when does 米 turn into ご飯? Is it possible to define a point in time during cooking when this transformation occurs? Is this even well defined?
If you put the lid on the pot so you can't see what's inside, can we say that the material exists in both the states of 米 and ご飯 until you take off the lid and look inside, kind of like Schrödinger's Cat in quantum mechanics?
>>
>>141620414
When you serve it.
>>
>>141620087
I tend to think learning to produce when you're a beginner is not an especially efficient use of your time and usually just make it harder on you. My advice would be to delete the production card type and only do the recognition cards.

You can increase the amount to any number you're comfortable with really, the main question would be whether you're comfortable with the amount of reviews it'll equate to and whether you can keep up an acceptable retention rate. In any case you can always change the number of cards you're doing if it doesn't feel right.

So if you turn off production cards and do 20-30 new kanji a day or something you'd be able to finish up the 1700 kanji in about 2-3 months.

>However I've also noticed that learning the kanji Aline isn't being very helpful at actually reading stuff since I don't know any jukugo.
Yeah so I think most (?) people here agree that learning kanji by themselves isn't necessarily the best way to go about it unless you have trouble remembering or differentiating the kanji. Learning words straight up will bootstrap you into reading much faster, since knowing the kanji by itself doesn't necessarily allow you to read any word containing it. So if you weren't feeling the kanji deck you could just drop it altogether and do 20-30 vocabulary words a day (using recognition cards). Then you could hit ~2k words in 2-3 months, and be in a good position to consume native material earlier.
>>
>>141620087
>>141620528
Oh, and when it comes to getting yourself burned out, the important thing is just to be aware of whether it's feeling like too much and whether you're starting to skip days. You can do any amount of cards a day you want but it just needs to be an amount that you can do every day without fail.

There just tend to be a lot of people who dive in and commit to a very large number of new cards, and then talk themselves out of doing fewer cards even though they're starting to skip days and their reviews are getting out of hand.

I haven't deleted the production cards because I've somehow convinced myself that manually writing down the kanji will help me identify it easier later on.

I tried doing some vocab but found it super hard and frustrating trying to learn words without knowing the kanji in it, like xxx歳 without knowing that's the kanji for age / years old or 貯金 without knowing that's save up + money = savings. I decided doing kanji first and vocab after I finish but I'm getting very discouraged at how long this is taking while not really seeing any results.

Yotsuba& and similar manga are the best place to start. There is a word list for the first volume which will (hopefully) help you when you inevitably get confused by a colloquialism or unknown grammar construct. Make sure you've read or at least skimmed an entire grammar guide/book, reference it frequently. Don't make the mistake of getting caught in the timewasting trap of grinding contextless vocabulary, and don't get caught in the meme of learning kanji on their own, because that's almost completely useless information to have hence that person's experience with Yotsubato you talk about. Tae Kim discusses this on his blog in more depth.

You'll need to look up some of the words but yeah, Yotsuba should be fine.
Though interestingly enough I studied kanji for a while and it actually did help me a good amount reading the manga. There's a lot more stuff you can guess from context if you know what the symbols mean. Didn't even have to look up 洗濯機 or 地球温暖化 for example, despite basically never hearing the terms before.

Just started learning 2 days ago, currently on the 4th column of Hiragana with about 80% confidence on the 39 words I've learnt so far from
here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zfBMDNkJuI

I plan on learning a new column every day adding the hiragana and words to my anki deck and sticking with it until about 95% confidence with words written in hiragana then moving on to katakana and repeat then kanji using the deck from the guide.

Is this going to fast or slow? and would it be more efficent to learn kanji while I'm learning hiragana/katakana or would it get confusing?

Go at your own pace. What works for you, works for you. However, I think you can crank out kana in two days. Just flash card that shit for a few hours until those symbols are comitted to muscle memory.
But again, what works for you works for you.

Yeah, you're definitely not wrong. I think grinding anki is a good way to build a base of vocab, but it definitely won't teach me how to actually use the language.

I've been using pimsleur and it's actually been really useful to get me running on how to comprehend and speak Japanese. I'm kind of surprised I've never heard it mentioned around here before.

I finished pimsleur forever ago - it's decent if you have the free time, but you'll get angry once you realize how little you know.

DJT has nothing to recommend except listening to seiyuu radio shows for listening practice once you finish it though, since most people don't care about speaking. It's frustrating how few oral communication practice resources there are for the language past the basics.

You may think that this is a joke but anything that's spoken japanese is basically equally good as long as the rate of speech and grammar level is high enough. Guess what? This includes some anime.
>>
>>141633382
There should be plenty of ways to find a language learning chat partner over the internet, though. And those are the best practice resource, since oral communication more or less requires you to talk to another person. If there's no one on the other side of the conversation then you're just screwing around.

>>141633665
You're totally right - it's just that going the self-taught route means you miss a lot of the fundamental basics; even if my vocabulary level is high, I rather be a NEET and shadow everyday conversational sentences to build up the confidence first. I don't think it's wrong to point out that those resources are lacking, compared to all the rest for learning Japanese available.

>>141633594
Listening practice is just recognition, it's the active, productive oral communication part I'm talking about.

Besides, while anime might be "compelling content" for some, it's basically a placebo for the timesink involved.

>>
>>141633732
for like 80% of your media consumption it legitimately does not matter what you're consuming as long as it's not literally meant for toddlers

all that's necessary is causing your brain to generate the necessary neural connections for information to be transmitted from japanese material subconsciously instead of by consciously wrangling it

unless you plan on reading classical japanese or legal documents you actually have to try really hard to fuck up and pick material that will not teach you everything you need to know

now there is a 20% of the time when you do have to be legitimately pushing your boundaries but that's time you should either be spending reading japanese-language japanese grammar books or doing flashcards, not consuming medoa

I have friends here in Japan who can speak Japanese well enough to land jobs, yet can't read kana on a menu or at karaoke. I'm the exact opposite, and sound like a drunken autist slurring all my words with my accent while being able to read well enough to do amateur manga translations on the side.

It's enough to make me want to pay for a niconico subscription just to have an audience that I know will cringe anyways, all from the safety of my bedroom.
>>
>>141634085
>I have friends here in Japan who can speak Japanese well enough to land jobs, yet can't read kana on a menu or at karaoke.
that's because they're illiterate, it has nothing to do with not knowing the language

>I'm the exact opposite, and sound like a drunken autist slurring all my words with my accent while being able to read well enough to do amateur manga translations on the side.
oh, you're one of those people who overestimate their language ability

you know how there are ESLs that speak in extremely broken english yet go on to translate things from english into their nature language? that's you, but with japanese

you literally just have not acquired enough of the japanese language to speak it fluently

at best you just need to practice putting the sounds out of your mouth, but this is clearly not the case if you think that practicing talking to yourself will help, and ~science~ has proven that speech training won't do any better for you than reading if you need it
>>
>>141634085
Speaking Japanese well enough to get a job doesn't mean all that much in terms of proficiency, depending on the job. You don't need to be able to read novels to move stuff around a warehouse.

J->E is a lot easier than E->J. Do you know how many Chinese there are who can pass N2, yet can't speak a word of Japanese? I live in the part of Tokyo that's obnoxiously foreign, it's all too common.

Similarly, it's why Japanese people suck at speaking - lack of actual practice, while only able to understand the written word.

I'm actually jealous of people who are only illiterate, because (I assume) learning the language is so much simpler when you're just having to attach symbols to the language you already know. I would say basic conversational Japanese ranks higher in importance than N2 reading comprehension.

>Similarly, it's why Japanese people suck at speaking - lack of actual practice, while only able to understand the written word.
every japanese person who I've seen (note: I didn't say "known personally" there) that was actually bad at speaking has actually not even known english well enough to know that -ing isn't a "present continuous" marker

>I'm actually jealous of people who are only illiterate, because (I assume) learning the language is so much simpler when you're just having to attach symbols to the language you already know.
learning how to read is simpler when you already know the language, wow, you're so profound

it's not like you can read without knowing japanese senpai, you can't enforce false equivalences just because you're dysphoric

>I would say basic conversational Japanese ranks higher in importance than N2 reading comprehension.

basic conversational japanese is a prerequisite to passing the actual N2
>>
>>141634503
>basic conversational japanese is a prerequisite to passing the actual N2
There is no spoken production component of the JLPT.
>>
>>141634416
>I would say basic conversational Japanese ranks higher in importance than N2 reading comprehension.

It just depends what your goals are and where you are?

Yeah obviously if you're in Japan and need Japanese RIGHT NOW then any speaking ability is worth more than any reading ability

But in the long term, especially if you aren't in Japan, having vocab and grammar down is more important since it is the foundation for everything else.

Also, "good enough to do amateur manga translations" means nothing. Anyone with kanjitomo can translate manga. Doing it without mistakes or doing it well is another thing, but just doing it doesn't say much about your level

you got a citation on that? what you're saying basically amounts to the same thing as "you can learn how to drive without knowing how to keep track of moving objects"

sure you might be able to pass a test if you cheat in the right ways but no you haven't actually "learned how to drive"

that's what N2s amount to

>Classes usually have a strong focus on speaking and someone speaking for a few years is going to be able to speak better than someone who hasn't spoken at all.

classes have a strong focus on speaking and it is for this very reason that they fail to spend enough time imparting actual japanese on their students. someone who doesn't know more than half of tae kim of grammar will not be able to hold a conversation until they spend weeks newly learning lots of rules that they never knew before, while someone who can literally already read will need to spend at most a day or two getting to grips with the pace and music of conversation

you're the delusional one who refuses to use their brain

Have you ever taken a language class? Someone who takes private lessons from a tutor for a couple years is going to be great at speaking, sure, but a group class is probably the worst possible setting to put yourself in if you're aiming to learn anything about a language. Even a shut-in who picked up most of his grammar from anime will probably be in a better position than a student whose only experience came primarily from listening to his equally inexperienced peers stumble over textbook sentences.
