I feel like the plot is moving too fast without fleshing out the characters enough. It can be good to start the show with a bang, but stuff just keep happening before we can find any good resolution to the questions we already have, and characters keep getting killed before we get to know them, it feels cheap. The characters are seriously messed up though, and It would be entertaining to see more of them. What I saw in the first episode was my jam. Maybe all of this would be too lengthy and wordy for what I want. I think this premise might have been better served by manga or Visual novel.

Besides, what kind of development are you expecting from the rapist and the chuuni? To me it feels like they're the characters who are the least likely to overcome their fears. I wonder if that's the point the show is trying to make. It reminds of And Then There Were None where the ones least likely to feel remorse for their crimes were the first to die while the rest of the characters got development (or at at least got their back stories revealed a bit). Maybe that's why we have this huge cast of characters

I think this isn't the kind of anime that relies on character development. Outside the main group, everyone's personalities are pretty much set from the beginning and the real fun for me is in watching them react to the mysteries.
I definitely would enjoy watching everyone develop as characters, but I think it could also take the spotlight away from the village itself. Plus there's the risk of falling into the usual Okada pitfalls, so I think I prefer it this way.
