There was a plan to make an original anime by Diomedia and director Mizushima and so I was asked to join.

I've heard rumours from people that know him and when I met it was just like the rumours said, he was an interesting person that had his own tempo. However, in contrast to his gentle appearance and way of speaking, there's a bit of "dark Mizushima" in the things he says and that is interesting. I remember that when I said "Mizushima you're quite dark" he replied with "you beat me in this regard".

I have seen his previous works but there were a lot of things that I didn't understand how he did just by watching the works. When I watch anime I can't help but get into work mode and start imagining the scenario and the production process but for Mizushima's works "eh, I wonder how this was done" was a question that popped up in mind often. Working together on an anime had shown me his greatness.

First of all his scripts are long. The usual anime episode uses 200 words per page and around 75 pages, there are situations where that's too much and they get cut down, but Mizushima wants 100 pages. Mizushima wants to cram the lines and material in one episode even if they originally won't fit in just one episode. And when it's complete you won't feel that things are rushed.

I'm not good with tight production schedules so I was delighted to know that Mizushima was the same. However, with regard to the schedule, his line "straying from it by this much is fine" in his case seems to be too much and seems a little limitless (I think 型 here refers to their schedule, please correct if that's wrong). Of course, I think that Mizushima also has his own insecurities. But he doesn't show any of it. It's because of this that I think I should also give my best.

Although this is an original anime it's not a story that I decide upon myself but is big general plot made by the ideas of everyone at the meeting, throwing out their ideas. At the start the details are undecided, with everyone providing ideas live and that's Mizushima's policy. We somehow decided upon the conclusion and settings on the way, but since we need to establish the breaks for each episode I was a little afraid that we couldn't reach the goals (for each episode I'm guessing) because of the story swelling up. Since the work contains mystery and tricks, there was always a tingling nervousness as the script was written as if in real time and there were times where plot points chosen early on had to be changed.

I was initially surprised by the fact that there were 31 characters. When there are multiple males and females there's always the order to stir up love between them isn't it. However, Mizushima didn't want to make the romance aspect too strong and so made the male-female relationships quite flat. These people are on a "life do-over tour" so they are feeling despair at life in their own ways and carry their own dark pasts. Furthermore, they're people who're only in their teens an twenties and thus it was difficult to decide how their problems were reflected in their behaviour.

A timeline wasn't made but if for this work it was necessary to think about this issue or else it'll get really chaotic. Everyone's inside a limited space, their actions and thinking are scattered, many events occur...... Inside my head I've lost track of the circumstances behind the main thread of the story too. It was like a puzzle to ensure that the information each character possesses don't contradict each other. During meetings many ideas are provided that make you think "that's great!" but once I go home and think hard about it I then need to change something from a few episodes back in order to incorporate the idea. Changing one thing leads to a chain of other things that need changes as you trace back so there was quite an amount of changes, which was frightening. What was basically the final script had to be rewritten many times.

The majority of the story took place inside the bus. On the way they stopped at a parking area but they were always on the journey to the destination. The second half had more scenes outside of the bus but I was told "just in the bus is fine" there too. Writing the scenario when the scene doesn't change is not that difficult. On the contrary there were easy parts but writing the continuity was a lot of work. However, due to the words of the director himself, I thought to myself "you're really aggressive huh".

I haven't really gone on trips before so I get excited when arriving at parking areas and service areas. Actually going to many different service areas was fun. But after going to them many times the director and other staff got tired of them. My fixation on them also weakened. I didn't have much luck with service areas so they seemed brilliant but that glimmer is now gone. Life is something like that too huh, I thought.
