monsters locations on maps got moved so did a bunch of npcs. So the level curve everyone knew for like a decade got thrown out the window. Alot of the new placements were incredibly stupid. Also alot of the "new" zones were pretty much renewal only. The game had it's strong points.
It has some of the best organized PvP the genre has to offer, and the battle system was fast enough to keep your attention at all times.
There is no way the game could be a success nowadays though, WoW made it so MMOs are heavily quest and lore based, both things that are exactly the weakest part of RO (which had interesting lore at times but it was so disconnected that most people didn't get to it).
RO's PvE was pretty poor too.

Revamp the game completely with new improved graphics similar to ToS but less anime-ish to appeal to more people but keep the mechanics and everything else the same, introduce new items and hats of course, basic update shit, balance shit out as much as possible, don't go lazy on the details and make a "sprite" for every single sword and shield. Invest on advertisement like a motherfucker and it's done.

The skill trees are perfectly fine pre-renewal.
Even some of the renewal classes are fine aside from the powercreep. At least it made Crusaders viable fighters instead of devotion bots.

Explain how they're old and clunky? Go into detail about what exactly is old and clunky? Because the way I see it by old and new standards RO has always had some very out of the norm gameplay mechanics, the isometric view, the point and clicking, the fast paced action, sprites and so on. It's different, it's not as easy as comparing some old 3D MMO like ultima online to a new 3D MMO like Black Desert.

Payon dungeon is probably one of the most memorable dungeons for me in that game along with culvert. I still remember when the area around the archer village kafra was full of people and merchant along with acolytes offering portals for 1k. good times
