Can anyone tell me how this was made? What's the easiest 3d software to get into for somebody who is really just interested in doing the visual design of robots and shit?? (no topo, animation, or fancy stuff)

you could make that in autodesk probably, although maybe less stylized (no fog effect)
Any 3d proffesional software really. Its just a model with a edge shader. The lines, text and the background are done with a image editting software like photoshop or gimp.
