like, i get all the shit about selling their skills and everything, you know that jobs for artists actually exist outside the internet, right? but whatever, that's not what i'm talking about. the thing is: fandom is not a business. at least, it wasn't supposed to be. we already have to spend money on the canon source (books, films, video games, etc) and now there's people illegally charging others for drawings of trademarked characters. it's an absolute dickish move in my opinion. an artist can always open commissions, if they need so much the extra money, and there's a fuckingload of people out there willing to pay for it. now, on patreon the shit is different. they charge for something i'm not even sure if i'll like. i have to pay just for the "privilege" of seeing their art. do you see how ridiculous that sounds? if people don't want to draw for free anymore, what's the point of even being part of a fandom? a place where we used to share free stuff with each other just for the fun of it? think, what you think would happen if fanfiction writers decided to charge for chapters? and like, fanfiction would cost much more, because books are more expansive than a sheet of paper with some cartoon dude naked on it. can you imagine how fucking ruined a fandom would be if everyone would have to pay for shit outside the original book/film/game marketing? the purpose of a fandom is exactly to be the opposite of a business. so, that's how i see most artists with patreons: a bunch of sharks just waiting for someone to bleed in the water.

If I could pay for fandom content I really want and guarantee its delivery, I would. I've had so many favorite fics and fancomics that I got super absorbed in and then the author/artist had to drop it because they had school/work/etc and burned out. Some of my favorite fanartists who drew for fun ended up going to school for other shit because it's so hard to make money at art and they got jobs in other fields and then disappeared from the art scene. I love the people who make that fan content and if I can support them with money so they keep making content I love, then I do, because that shit just won't exist if these guys don't make it. Official sources aren't gonna make the best stuff, because they don't listen to fans, and they're never gonna make official porns. Your "purity of fandom" bullshit about how people should only make free fanart out of the goodness of their hearts is a nice dream but artists live in the real world and need to pay bills and budget their time the same as everyone else.

You do buy video games and movies, right? I mean, those are luxury commodities that are actually worthless in the grand scheme of living and aren't needed for you to live, so is the internet service you have. Hell man, you buy food before you eat it, unless you're still a kid that lives with his parents. People sell the things they produce and you decide for yourself if you want buy the stuff you want.
So what if an artist sells their work, that's what all artists do, past and present, to make sure they have the money to buy their paints, inks, drawing tablets and software programs. As well as food on the table and a roof over their head. It's not like they're forcing me to buy their art, it's a choice.
Plus, if you want it for free you can just go to 4chan and wait for some people that did buy the art to give it away for free. At the end of the day, you can look at the art they have already produced and decide for yourself if it's they style you like.

Now go to any artists' forum and find out how hard it's to work of any of these jobs nowadays, making a life with it or just being well-paid to start, because with your tantrum you can be just A) a 14 years old mum's little boy or B) a ignorant. Good skills are not a guarantee for turn automatically into a super cool profesional artist fixed for life. The last chance for many good artists is selling their art, and many times fanart, because no matter how good they are, nobody cares for their own stuff. Simple, unfair and realistic.
