Overton Bridge

Fucking hell.

50 dogs in the last 50 years

Other dogs have not been as fortunate. In the past half-century, some 50 dogs have leapt to their deaths from the same historic bridge.

During one six-month period last year, five dogs jumped to their deaths.

All of the deaths have occurred at virtually the same spot, between the final two parapets on the right-hand side of the bridge, and almost all have been on clear, sunny days.

Furthermore, the dogs which have perished have all-been long-nosed breeds: labradors, collies and retrievers.

Dorren Graham, of the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals calls the phenomenon a 'heartbreaking mystery'.

'There are lots of owners whose dogs have died and who are trying to find out why they jumped.'

Could dogs be deliberately committing suicide?

Built in 1895 by Calvinist Lord Overtoun, the ornate Victorian structure arches 50ft over Overtoun Burn, the stream which runs below.

Now, thanks to stories posted on the internet, doglovers from around the world are asking: could dogs be deliberately committing suicide on this particular bridge, and if so, why?

In an attempt to solve a problem which has left many local dog owners so concerned, they will no longer walk their pets on the doomed bridge, a host of specialists converged on the west Scotland town earlier this year to investigate - and finally solve the mystery.

Rumours have long circulated that the bridge and nearby Overtoun House are haunted. In 1994, local man Kevin Moy threw his baby son to his death from the bridge, claiming he thought the child was the anti-Christ.

Shortly after he tried to end his own life with an unsuccessful suicide attempt from the same bridge.

Donna Cooper says: 'Rumour has it that he was on drugs, but he insisted the place was haunted and it does seem to have a strange effect on people and dogs.'

Best suggestion is mink. The dogs smell them. They were introduced in Scotland in the 20's but population grew in the 50's, when the dogs started jumping. That text above is from the Daily Mail.

Why would mink smell make a dog think he could jump off a bridge?
>>

dogs are fucking retarded.

i've seen my dog chase a rabbit right out into the road and miss getting hit by a truck going like 50mph by like a second. once they smell/see animal their senses take over.

They're not that retarded they think they can survive a 50ft drop, have you ever had a dog on somewhere high like a roof? They'll go to the edge, but there's no way they'll jump off it regardless what is at the bottom. Even the high pitched noise theory holds more water than that mink theory.

just from the image the parapet looks kind of convex-ish. they maybe jump up to see what's going on, then lose their footing.

It probably has something to do with the resonance of the bridge desu.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-zczJXSxnw

This is the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. It collapsed due to the resonance frequency of the wind amplifying the resonance of the bridge. If sound is able to bring down a bridge, why wouldn't it be able to affect dogs in a similar way? Dogs have keener hearing than human beings, and are able to hear sounds at much higher frequencies than their human counter parts. This is why a dog whistle works in the way that it does. At that one spot on the bridge, due to the resonance of the wind, bridge, etc, it's possible that it is producing a sound that adversely affects animals in such a way that it causes such erratic behavior.

But there were cases of sensory stunted pooches who still jumped.
>>
Op here I've heard of all these theories the sound frequency is the most logical but it seems the dogs must be attracted to whatever it is as why jump instead of running away ?

A dog doesn't know that there's a giant fall on the other side. There's that high ledge blocking view. The dog probably thinks there's ground on the other side, like it's jumping over a couch at it's home. The trees on the side there are pretty misleading.

this is bullshit, that bridge fell over because the high winds and because it was badly designed with no way for air to pass through it. There were 40 mph winds on the day it fell over, and even at low wind speeds it would wobble.

It had nothing to do with sound.
