Because mundanes going to mundane, and ascribe magical nonsense to mundane shit to try to disguise themselves as being boring mundies. It's also easy, which appeals to the lazy.
Do you hear any "occult" discussion about number theory, higher mathematics, or anything that isn't fiddling with shapes and one's digits? Nope, not really. It's always banal bullshit.
Protip: the true "occult" lies not in the Great Mysteries of Edgar Fuckdicks or the Kablahblah, but in throwing away belief and embracing narrative as something that informs about the human condition and subjective value rather than being claims of truth. For truth, there's the fields of philosophy and science, and if you make claims without engaging in these fields, you are nothing more than a pseudointellectual charlatan.
