This reminds me of the ending in Fullmetal Alchemist where they piece together notes and realize that you can make an alchemical circle by drawing lines between different related parts. Almost certainly. The author wrote everything huge, such that only a sentence or so would fit on a page. You don't do that if you're sitting down to a time-consuming task like using real, reasonably-secure cryptography. I think the word on the left here is "The" because it's repeated many times. This symbol I marked as the letter "A" because it's written on it's own and the only letter that it could really be is "A".
