I've recently enjoyed playing Outlast.

Lots of blood! And some gore, but who cares about gore, amiright?

Holy shit that game, currently doing a Ranger Hardcore run. One of my recently favorite games. Will read the novel once I'm done with this playthrough.

Have you played the "Whistleblower" Add-on?

I can only recommend IAMSCARED.exe
Sounds like a cheap Creepypasta rip-off but it's a decent short game with several spooks

Indeed it was, Whistleblower was great. Remember the guy that tried to make you his wife? lol

You must go back and play it, Perhaps play it on Halloween for extra spookiness

iamscared is a creepy pasta game basically, it doesnt even do a good job at it.

The UK had a English translation release around 2010. The US got it's release around 2013. The US was basically the last country to get a release and may people in the US got it thru amazon.uk.

I got mine off amazon.com

I would definitely recommend Miasmata.

It's so serene for the majority of the time and has some good exploration. And knowing that there is only one hostile creature on a pretty big island causes you to let your guard down. The scares are really organic.

Anyone else played it?
>>
>Outlast
Personally I found this really shit, until I turned off the music. Whoever did the sound design removed all tension from the game with over dramatic violins spoiling every potentially scary moment, even alerting you to enemies presence. Once the music was off it became pretty good, though very repetitive and predictable. (Unless you literally never pick up any notes scattered about.)

> Metro (both games)
Very good games, good plots, great environment, more unique paranormal entities than most media. It does a great job at making you breathe a sigh of relief when you reach a friendly station and can take a while to appreciate being around other people and not hiding in the dark.
The AI lets it down though, once you go loud you can't hide again easily because the AI get psychic cheat mode and the stealth mechanics are utterly shit. I don't know when it became a thing that enemies can't see you 5 feet away because you happen to be in a designated "shadow" but this shit has to stop.
The book and it's sequels are all very good, a little slow in places but any seasoned reader will love them.
I recommend the audio books, I listened to them in work and that week flew past so quickly.

>Until Dawn
Fuck this sorry excuse for a game and fuck anyone who actually enjoys this kind of shitty game or film.
>surprises
You gotta be fucking shitting me.

>SCP Foundation
Holy shit are they still developing this piece of shit?

>Miasmata
Decent game, very good considering two brothers made it. Massive map (though basically empty) and the monster is genuinely scary the first couple of times you meet it.
Unfortunately it becomes nothing but a nuisance after an hour or two, and by late game you are absolutely fed up of it. The further you progress the more "present" the monster becomes which means you're yelling "Just fuck off!" because you want to finish the game and get it over with, not from any fear.

cont.
>>
>>17804296
My own suggestions.

>Soma
I really enjoyed this game. Great acting, great story (though, again, predictable as fuck) and it's a game you can fly through in an afternoon and really enjoy. It tried to make you question what is life, what is consciousness etc, but frankly this is low tier shit for anyone who spends time on /x/ so whatever. Still a good game.

>Sunless Sea
Very /x/, very Lovecraftian, but not for everyone. Top down ship sailing/fighting game set in an underground ocean. Very story driven and atmospheric, tonnes of lore and fascinating /x/esque stuff. Great game, but you probably have to enjoy that kind of thing.

>X-Com Enemy Within: Long War
I consider this /x/, it's aliens for fuck's sake. Long War is one of my favourite games/mod/experiences.
I can't recommend X-Com 2 because I found the setting absolutely shit, you feel overpowered, and there's stupid lame exosuits and I'm jaded because it let me down so badly.

>Hard West
I just saw this in my collection and it's full of paranormal stuff. Turn based combat with cowboys who sell their soul to the devil, become undead, kill demons, build and destroy machines that turn everybody for miles around insane...
The combat seems janky at first but you get used to it and it becomes very enjoyable.
Lots of different campaigns following different supernatural people/stories. It's underrated.

I can't really think of much else hugely /x/... but there's certainly a shit load of alien games. Currently enjoying Stellaris and still play Infested Planet from time to time. (Amazing game.)

It's incredibly hard to make a game that's genuinely scary. Outlast and Miasmata are perfect examples. Once you've been scared once, all the tension is immediately released, you will never, ever get that fear back again and enemies quickly become nothing but an annoyance, like a fly that won't leave you alone.

Best part about the game is the fact that they used most horror movie cliches. They didn't feel out of place, forced or like they were used because they ran out of ideas, they feel better then if they were in a movie.

Still though, there are some fucking awful jumpscares, like when a random ghost woman thing just pops from under the screen only to disappear after she screams. There's a couple other instances of shit like this, but they're not that common and they're easy to ignore.
>>
>>17800978
The I have no mouth and I must scream game is pretty spoopy, it's really rough around the edges since it was made around the time point and click adventure games were getting popular. One of the only games I would reccomned watching a playthrough of since the gameplay is so tedious and awful.

Why did they add this in, anyway? At least put a dummy or something where it was so that it doesn't look like it disappeared into nothing.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.

Remember that spooky part with Scarecrow from Batman: Arkham Asylum? It's an entire horror game based around mindfuck mechanics like that (they were also first people to introduce a sanity meter into a horror game).

It's on GameCube, but it's not like a modern gaming PC would have any troubles emulating GC.

If yu like new X-COM games, definitely play original ones. X-Com: Ufo Defense (aka UFO: Enemy Unknown) and X-Com: Terror from the Deep are basically half horror, half tactical games - combat and fog of war are intentionally designed to spook you, inspired by atmoshpere in X-Files.

2033 was better, bye miles. This was way more character centered for my taste, Metro 203- is a great dark, rich world to explore and to learn from it. The first one did an awesome work showing that, from the daily life, to the power structures and the world both inside and outside of the tube. 2034 lacked all of those things, except, perhaps, they got somehow closer to the emerald city.

I hate this fucking world, too many god damn fuckers in it.
Too many thoughts and different societies all wrapped up together in this fucking place called AMERICA.
Everyone has their own god damn opinion on every god damn thing,
and you may be saying 'Well what makes you so different?'.
Because I have something only me and V have; SELF AWARENESS.
Call it exortenstiolism or whatever the fuck you want.
We know what we are to this world, and what everyone else is.
We learn more than what caused the civil war and how to simplify quadratics in school.
We've been watching you people and we know what you think and how you act.
All talk and no action.
People who are said to be brave or courageous are usually just STUPID,
then they say later that they did it on purpose cause they're brave,
when they did it on fucking accident.
God everything is so corrupt and so filled with opinions and points of view,
and peoples own little agendas and schedules.
This isn't a world any more.
It's H.O.E and no one knows it.
Self awareness is a wonderful thing.

It was a third person shooter, where the player would loose body parts wen taking damage, Up do just a rolling head, you could recover the body parts by rolling over them. I think the protagonist was fighting demons. Can't remember if he had a coat or not, but sems like he did.
Thanks in advice, to contribute: I say Siren, but was already mentioned.

Need more games with self defense.

Dying Light was pretty run of the mill zombie fare, but it has some tense moments. The gameplay is actually pretty good, but the story is atrocious.

I've been trying out the old The Thing game, it's predictable but the devs understand that and somebody might make a decent successor someday.

I like having the option to defend myself, because it gives you the opportunity to figure out if defending yourself is even viable. The first time I tried to use a pistol on an alien in Alien Isolation, just to see that it had barely any effect, that feeling was priceless. Pathologic did that too in a way, the pistol was very limited and couldn't handle numbers very well. While the rest of the games went against the very notion, the Dead Space series has a notable enemy who regenerates after all damage. That helplessness or ineffectiveness against certain enemies should really be used more often in modern games.

I've played most of the stuff in this thread, horror games has been a hobby of mine for years.
>>
>>17824666
This is what a lot of horror games fundamentally fail to realise. That vulnerability, as opposed to helplessness, is what creates fear.

You must be able to defend yourself in some manner, but it must be dangerous, risky and difficult to do so. If all you can do is run and hide in a locker then you will default to that behaviour at the slightest sign of trouble and thereby ruin the tension.

If you have to make a fight or flight response each time then the experience is much more notable.

Which is why games such as Thief / Condemned / Penumbra have such an effective atmosphere.
>>
>>17824691
Bashing a dog to death in penumbra was definitely one of my fondest memories.

Ever never trust weaboo soma fanboys unless you like to play games where you walk under water and chill out with fish. Some times robot chases you but even that is not fun or scary. The plot is pretty similar to system shock 2 or matrix but has it's own 'clever' twists and lame ending.

4/10, would rather not play again.

SOMA is also rly good.
>>
>>17812075
The thing I love so much about the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games is the juxtaposition between scares and the rest of the gameplay. One minute you're hiding behind cover, tossing grenades, blind firing over a wall trying to fight the Russian army, the next you're dropping into a sewer and pissing yourself because of the invisible rape monsters that keep tickling your prostate with their tentacle beards, all while simultaneously firing in every direction at once Predator style in hopes that you may hit something hard enough to keep it's impending rape away from you for another few moments. Spoop/10, one of my favorite horror experiences, and on top of that the combat is actually really good outside of the horror aspects once you rebind the keys. God damned Russian games always seem to have the shittest pre set keybindings, it's like some unspoken rule.
>>
>>17825974
As a side note, do everything you can to find the bloodsucker nest. My god that was one of the scariest game experiences of my life because I never took the quest to clear it out, so I had NO idea what kind of hell I was wandering in to. It was originally meant to be a straight-forward space-opera sequel to Laser Squad, and 'development' is a pretty loose term - in the same sense Duke Nukem Forever was in development in 12 years (but like, maybe 3 years of that contributed to final product, and rest was just constantly revised prototypes), and Gollop explicitly mentioned another tv series, UFO, as inspiration. I seriously doubt that X-Files had no influence on the final game.

Like, remember that a year is a REALLY long time in game design, especially back in the 90s.

I mean - just compare X-Com to Gollop's earlier games, like Rebelstar or Laser Squad. They don't have quite the same tone and atmosphere.

No games thread on /x/ should go without bringing up worlds. It's not spooky in the traditional sense ie: scripted events, monsters and isolation. However the cult rumors, the strange regulars and the unknown vastness makes it a creepy and interesting. It seems the further in you get the more psychedelic and creative the worlds get. It's almost like the virtual equivalent of urbex as most of the worlds are frozen in time, they will forever more be a lasting relic of the 1990s (for as long as the servers are kept running at least).

Changing the difficulty on a horror game should only become a factor if the game is either not stressful enough or beyond your gaming capabilities.
For example, don't play on the insane difficulty in Outlast unless you know where all the enemies are and how to avoid them. If you do know, it makes the game a much better experience the second time around.

IKR! It's my fave game ever, so I'm a bit biased and all, but there's something so special about how it combines a chilly, isolating and claustrophobic atmosphere with this calm, numbing dreaminess that permeates the game. A lot of horror games juxtapose calm and relief against fear, but Fatal Frame 3 manages to use them simultaneously in a way that lets the fear really work its way under your skin.

I can wax lyrical about it for a very long time, but really it's criminal how this game is generally overlooked not just in the survival horror genre but within its own series, as 2 tends to get all the attention.

It also has sound effects for more spooks.
