Most boards are containment boards for one group or another. Can't avoid that dilemma on an open anonymous website.

Sometimes I wonder what the internet would be like if it went in the opposite direction regarding anonymity, and everyone had to use their real names. Would it still be a trolley and passive aggressive shithole?
>>
We went through every conceivable craze, from real good spooky OC copypasta to tulpas to skinwalkers to sigils to black eyed children to flat earthers to the current cesspool of shit.

I started browsing 4chan in what, 2006? 2007? I barely come to /x/ now. Cheers.

It used to be way better before creepy pasta became so well known. Now my grandparents know about slenderman and kids on deviant art draw weird sexual fanart. It was great when it was more about actual paranormal shit. All of us working together to investigate stuff we would find .
Then it went through a period where every thread was about religion and magic. That's when I abandoned ship.
Now it looks like its just purely 15 year olds posting absolute shit and half the threads are about flat earth.

Yes, i'm tripping. Yell, scream, cry, whatever.

But to me, when I first got to /x/ almost 10 years ago, it was awesome. I was that weird kid who only read ghost stories, thought Paradise Lost was actually an awesome book when made to read it, I grew up on X-files, Ahh Real Monsters, and shitty B horror movies. And I was never told by my family to stop "imagining stuff". So I came here and felt right at home.

Ghost stuff? Spooky camping stories? Magic? New ideas? The Occult? Literal threads dedicated to shows I fucking grew up on, and streamers coming to show movies I loved as a kid as well? /x/ had it all.

/x/ got me into the occult. It was great! No Ragrats. But somewhere along the line we went wrong. Maybe I contributed to it. Probably did. I won't deny it.

But in my 9ish-10 years here I've seen a lot of cool, and a lot of shitty shit. At about year...7. The shitty shit became the majority. And I partially blame Reddit for this. And partially tripfags (myself included.) and just the world in general. It ha sall culminated in /x/ going from being full of cool, creative dudes and dudettes, to copy-paste fags, people with egos (I have one. Laying it all out here.) who think they command respect...for copy-pasting the same shit, or doing halfassed jobs at writing/drawing/readings/giving "wisdom". And of course you have the fact that 4chan as a whole is now populated by more, and more SJW faggots. Mix all this and we have /x/ now. A place full of people who are literally trying to escape reality, trying to be living fucking memes, or summerfags...but year round.

The entire internet is like this now. At least the entire "topweb" is. And it sucks. I came here 10ish years ago as a kid (too young to be here, but most of you fuckers still are too young to be here.) looking for a place to feed my spoop addiction and meet cool people. I found it. Then watched it all slowly turn into what it is today.

Dunno guys. I just don't know.
>>
You changed, not /x/
>>
I'm an admitted newfag, been a /b/tard for years but recently started visiting /x/ for some paranormal shits and giggles. It's been a few months.

I have no idea what it used to be like, only that the oldfags complain a hell of a lot about the newfags, and I can completely agree with 99% of their reasoning.

Sometimes you get the odd decent thread but it seems to me so fucking rare. There's way too much bullshit to wade through;

Is magic real? No of course it fucking isn't.
How can I summon a such and such? You can't, they don't exist.
Green text thread. Full of shit tier pastas.
And then of course the conspiracy bullshit. Flat Earth trolls fuck off please.

I yearn for actual paranormal stuff, though I realise it's all bullshit it has the potential for great entertainment, like an amazing sci-fi or horror flick. But it's all shallow shit we've all seen a hundred times before. Alien stories that bring nothing new to the table. Theories about this or that, things we've all given our opinions on time and time again.

Where's the OC, where's the intelligent debate instead of the fucking "Earth is flat." "Fuck off cancer fag."

Basically, /x/ becomes more like /b/ every day that passes... and I can only think it's because of all the kiddies who now think coming on 4chan makes them an edgy fucker.

I wish I'd been here in the golden days. I envy you oldfags. And I salute you.
>>
>>17734225
This, truth be told. I am a newfag (5 years), but before 2012, the internet in general was a better place IMO, not just 4chan.
I shared with anons here on /x/ with wisdom, humor, insight, stories, scares, fears, hopes, you know, the stuff that made the community feel like family. And while I am a newfag, I found the change revolting and I fought back against it. WELL LOOK ME NOW, FAGGOTS, I'M THE KING OF CANCER! THE SHITTIEST SHITPOSTER THERE IS! FAGGOT SUPREME! THE FATHER OF LIES!
Sure, I still provide some humor and insight, but it isn't the same anymore. We are living inside the rotting carcass of a dead god. Rip in peaces, pham, rip in peaces, dear /x/

This is all without a doubt the worst part of the board for me. These are some of *the most* boring threads on the fucking planet, and along with the astrology nonsense are the shittiest parts of /x/. No, people can't read your fucking palms or whatever over the internet, or tell you your future, or anything like that. It isn't interesting, it isn't enlightening, its just boring "spiritual" nonsense that belongs on Facebook.

it used to be /b/ with ghosts

now i think it's /pol/ without politics.
>>
It used to be a lot slower, and with a lot more OC. Around 2007/8 this was a basically forgotten corner of 4chan and it was easy to post a creepy story, go to bed, and come back the next afternoon to read the replies to it. Almost all the stock creepy images that get reposted over and over were made in those two or three years.

At one point (2009?) /b/ went down, and this was where they migrated until it came back up. Some people kept visiting, but they didn't "get" it. From there, it was all downhill.
>>
Those who are trying to paint the /x/ of yesteryears as some sort of utopia of original creepypastas and quality threads are clearly newfags, or oldfags with nostalgia goggles on. It got pretty shit back in the day too. It feels like there's more shitposting to deal with now than back then, but at least we have janitors/moderators who actually give a fuck about this board, sometimes, and will get rid of the worst offenders.

The problem with this board is the tendency to hop on bandwagons or take an idea that's original and fresh, then run it into the ground until everyone but the hardcore fans are sick of it. See: Tulpas, Skinwalkers/Goatmen, BEKs, etc.

Not paranormal

It is this mindset that led /x/ to everything you described.

If /x/ was "/x/ - Spooky", this would've been avoided; it's intentions were already well described as being for that purpose on creation, but the fact it is called "/x/ - Paranormal" means that the only topics up for discussion are roleplaying and conspiracies.

It had WAY less fucking retarded roleplay threads back in the day. Also, less of calling everyone a shill, there were actually quite many skeptics around, way more than now.

Pretty much everyone stopped wanting to RP and believe in shit. Everyone wants it to be 100% real with proof or you are full of shit RPer. Old /x/ it didnt matter RP or not people played along for the creeps. Now days /x/ is in the Realism era. It's sad to see a place based on fiction get so real.

>>
>>17733927
Worse.
The sad thing is, despite all the trolls and skeptics one would expect a board like this to attract, the community denigrates itself with it's autistic colloquialisms like "ayy lmao" and calling every troll and skeptic a "shill."
Divination threads get bumped to the top, while anything remotely paranormal languishes.
Sure, there is far too many roleplayers, lonely teenagers who think they're vampires, and the huge membership who find glitches in every poorly made CGI youtube video "spoopy," there are also people who come looking for answers, and to share interesting information pertinent to the board's theme.
They've become the rarity of this community, and there's really no one to blame but the community itself.
>>
>>17733927
>How has /x/ changed over the years?

More people have found it, meaning more kids have found it = increase in shitposters.

It was no better back in 2012. The content is the same now, it just gets buried in shit.

We've done everything, debunked everything, and scoured the net. The amount of spoops available is now limited, that's why it's not as good. Back then people believed in skinwalkers and goatmen.
>>
When you first find /x/ it's all new. You find things like "ted the caver", creepypastas, conspiracies, crazy youtube mysteries etc and it all blows your mind. It's great. You'll spend months watching/reading shit that ypu never knew existed.

After a year or so you realise it's all RP and shit gets boring. You stop reading greentexts, or looking at shopped UFO's.

In the long run.. /x/ will make you skeptical of all things paranormal purely because of the amount of bullshit on here.
>>
It used to be a fun board with discussion of spooks, conspiracies, and plenty of OC creepypasta. Nowadays it has far less of those things, and a ton of idiots who think magic or divination is real.

You know why old /x/ seems good to you and yet you hate what it has become? Demographics. This website has a demographic makeup that mostly consists of individuals below its stated required age. Considering this, that is why advertising on 4chan results in so few conversions, and why moot sold this operation for a handful of shekels.

We arrive here at some point in our lives and just hang out like everyone else. Except most people just move on and leave places like this eventually. Those of us who stay slowly watch the place change as a new wave of the key demographic washes in on the cultural shores leaving its water mark. This happens over and over until we can barely recognize the landscape anymore. We all age and yet the demographic never changes because it is not a closed system dying a slow entropic death.

There was never a golden age. You were just young enough to enjoy it all once.

Thanks for thinking so highly of me. But no, the Avatar of the 2015-2016 season is The Fairy Queen. The way she triggers people is surreal. I, on the other hand, have a benevolent plan for my shitposts. I want to become the most hated being on /x/ because of it, and I'm doing a pretty good job

/x/ started out as a photography board, but was quickly recast as the paranormal board due to the popularity of a .rar file containing several stories that were unnerving or creepy called 'Glitches in Real Life' or something like that(It's been over a decade, give me a break). It would be stenographed into an image and shared on /b/. The board was directly created as a result of this, and for the first few years stayed true to its roots. Being filled with mostly creepypasta, images, and various other types of unnerving media. Posts would last months before a 404 and it was truly a golden age for those who seek that permeating sense of dread.

Slowly around 2007-2008 the board became more popular, and the board culture was now less focused on stories, and began slowly to focus more on memes, and self referential in jokes. This was mostly blamed on invading /b/tards, and many images of the time can be found that reflect this. Somewhere around 2009 the grifter was introduced, and the shitposting and cancer never really stopped after that.

ARGs became popular, with the rise of the 905 project on /b/ and many attempts were made on /x/. It wasn't all bad, though, quality creepy content like Yume Nikki and Saya No Uta could still be found with the help of the /rs/ board and would be linked here every now and then.

After that tripfags started to show up, attention whoring egotistical basket cases like Eris, The Doctor, and other ilk. Their shitposting knew no limits, and truly creepy content was so rare here, searching for it through the garbage wasn't feasible. Any of the old users left here, at this time left for other image boards, I know I did.

So now we have where the board is today, in the nadir of the shitposting age. The board is populated by RP faggots, muh-skinwalkers, schizophrenics like Hans, easily debunkable hoaxes, and the like. Where the only thing creepy about this board is how it is a hollow shell of itself.

Also Mr. Z can suck my fucking dick.

There's a shitload of mysteries, weird shit, delayed tech, psy ops, lost places, lost media, hidden experiments, cryptids, serial killers, paranormal transhumanist, cult members, deep sea spooks, mind control, classified info, unexplainable events, and big titty bitches for us to enjoy.

Quit your senile mopping and go spook the kids.

This post is the most accurate. I'd like to add, people migrated because some of them started spamming the board claiming it was "the new /b/", since /b/ at the time was the only board that was down. /x/ never recovered from that,

I remember that some of the hoaxes and ARG attempts were pretty well done. There was enough effort that even if they were bullshit I was caught up in the story and wanted to see what would happen next. I wanted to investigate for myself.

Things I miss about the old /x/:
>spooky videos from Latin American and European tube sites
>having to work really hard to find info about weird websites
>the old chanarchive with tons of old threads dating way back
>weirdo vhs stills
